If/when it happens again, check the Past Members list to see if you can add them back from there.? That list is only on Premium or Enterprise groups, but you must have one of those since you were able to Direct Add him.

He responded that he didn't do it and wanted to stay, and there were no emails with instructions to reinstate, not even in his spam folder.
John -- Yes, if this reinstatement email is lost somehow, I agree that's a real problem.

So I direct added him.? All is fine except that the member list does not show him as having been a member since 2005.? Not that anyone cares mostly but... it does help moderators to determine if a removal was valid or a yahoo issue.? If it's a long time member it's likely an issue and we can go through the effort to notify outside groups.io and resolve things like this.? I couldn't find a way to reinstate him myself.? Is there a way?
It seems there ought to be a way for an owner to resend the reinstatement message, just as we are able to send additional bounce probes to those who are Bouncing. As it stands, there is currently no way for an Owner to actively provide assistance.

Could a person like that login to their account on groups.io and have a reinstate button or something?? There wasn't anything on my owner account that would allow me to do anything but direct add that I found.? I would think that it is a regular occurrence that when someone is removed for spam the backout emails would never get there.
It can happen that an email provider triggers the feedback loop and pre-emptively deletes the message without it ever landing in a spam folder. In such a case the reinstatement email might never see the light of day, either. Even if it does land somewhere in the member's incoming mail, that's no guarantee that he won't balk/panic and delete it himself.

I just now sent a suggestion to beta on one way that might be remedied...may take awhile before it passes moderation. If you like the idea please give it a bump...or suggest some alternative approach.

Bruce

Re: Geesh, thought I was in the Yahoo Forum...anyway...

Thanks, Duane, appreciate the reply and will utilize your suggestion until a "fix".

I now return this groups.io site to Yahoo :)

What I do is remove the content, inserting an appropriate comment, and lock the topic.? The last one, still locked, now says "[Mod Note: Content inappropriate for group.? Content deleted, topic is locked and will be deleted]"? After awhile, usually a week or so, I can delete the topic.

I keep hoping that this will come to the top of the TODO list.? I think the plan is to be able to delete the message, but leave a place holder so replies won't start a new topic.? At least that's what I understand from the last discussion on beta and the notes on Trello.

Geesh, thought I was in the Yahoo Forum...anyway...

Back to groups.io (not yahoo)... if a member puts up a post, and I opt to delete it as moderator (poster not on moderated status), it still goes out to email for those who have that option set, and they can then reply and effectively revive it, even though the original post is no longer there.? yes, i could leave the post up and lock it, but I don't even want the post there.

options?

Re: Yahoo Group Suddenly Comes To Life

Not all Yahoo groups still work for email only. Mine (the one I transferred here) does NOT. That's a major reason we moved it.

Re: Yahoo Group Suddenly Comes To Life

Jan,

Our old Yahoo Groups' owner is AWOL since 2010.? These are setup to allow anyone to just join and post.? No moderators either.? We moved 4 groups into 1 here at GIO.

In the past month, I've gotten 5 new messages off those Yahoo listserv groups.? I've successfully rerouted 3 of those folks via a posting on those Yahoo listserve groups to join us on GIO.? Not sure where the other 2 people went.

We have no ability to update the ABOUT page on Yahoo as this is an OWNER function.? I do like the fortnight notification going out to those Yahoo listserve groups now.? It seems to be our only method of recourse.

You won't get it.? This is the way the site works.? /helpcenter/faq/1/group-member-faq/q-i-got-a-message-that-i and /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/5115 have all the information needed for this situation.

You would be notified via email when this happens if you had your own subscription set to receive all owner Notifications.

Jan,

New people coming to the old group - that is one I never heard or
thought about
Even if there are no members and no messages, the Yahoo Group's Info/About page can stand as a "we've moved" billboard to direct visitors on to the new home of the group.

New people coming to the old group - that is one I never heard or thought about Actually I think the old group needed someone to approve new members I do not think new people can now still reach the old group?
?
So far I have sent out a message to the old group every three months or so that we have moved So far it has only brought almost inactive members of the old group to the next one But the owner of the old group literally being deceased we can also not close the old group?
?
But unless new messages at the old group occur it is gone? anyway
?
Best regards

Personally, I think there is a good reason to keep the old group, even if it's been gutted.? Many people learn about a group from something someone posted on a website or in another forum many years ago.? Leaving the old group gives them guidance to find the new group.

If you delete the old group, they can't find the new group at its new location -- unless they embark on a process of discovery with no roadsigns to help them.? I like leaving behind roadsigns.

Re: Yahoo Group Suddenly Comes To Life

Two other old Yahoo groups I belong to have also had occasional messages posted after the group had moved here. In both a moderator replies fairly quickly, "Sorry! This group has closed. We moved the group -- including archives -- to Groups.io with the same group name. Here is the url- xxx.com. Please send future messages to that group."

What I did, when I moved any of my groups to Groups.io, was leave the Yahoo group set to everyone is moderated. That way, when someone sent a message to the old YG! group, I would delete the message and then email them and make the same explanation as above. Almost without exception, the person would email me back and say it had been a mistake. That they sent the message from their email and the auto-address had filled in the wrong url. They'd also usually then delete the Yahoo address from their email address book.

Thanks, I'll do that.

FYI, I misspoke earlier. I meant to say I don't think this was a issue before we added a subgroup, not subdomain. Sorry for the confusion.

Cheers.

Re: Yahoo Group Suddenly Comes To Life

jonathon,

The anti-spam measures I set up, used to work. However, with the
changes Oath made last year, new subscribers can spam to their heart's
content.
We had a similar situation in one of my Yahoo Groups. What we did was change the group to "Anyone can apply to join this group, moderator approval is required" (it had been set for moderator approval NOT required).

This doesn't prevent a spammer who becomes a member from posting, but it at least stopped the "drive-by" spammers who would join and spam.

Except in the couple of cases where they fooled me and I approved their membership... Sigh.

Re: Yahoo Group Suddenly Comes To Life

Rli,

Under Groups Settings over there, there's a Messages Reply To: and
choices of All Members, Sender, Group Owner, Leave Group and All
Members and Sender. Not sure it that means you can choose Group Owner
and anyone who tries to post to the group - it only goes to the Group
Owner so you can tell them to not post there.
No.

It means the same thing there as here: it adds a Reply-To field to the header of outgoing messages so that replies by email (the only kind now) are directed as specified.

It won't affect a new message sent to the group's posting address.
