Can you confirm that a message sent out on a Main group willYour question is slightly ambiguous even though you may not have intended it to be. No, a message sent to the main group will not be sent to all subgroups. Yes, a message sent to the main group will "reach" all members of the main group (depending on their subscription settings for the main group) -- and since everyone in a subgroup must also be a member of the main group, "everyone on all subgroups" will receive it, but they won't receive it *on* the subgroups. I'm not sure if one can subscribe a subgroup to the main group directly (so that the subgroup would receive all mails that are sent to the main group). Samuel |

See this wiki page for help. Thanks Frances, I understand full well how the system works. I'm just asking about possible problems with a subtle nuance to the process. I've been an old dog around here for a number of years. (Tomorrow is the 5th anniversary of my first groups.io group. Cue the fireworks!) Mostly I just lurk and ponder, and try not to bark much. I did some of the first group transfers with Mark and helped find some of the bugs in the process as well as a couple back-door tricks. For some reason, just before the shutdown, I decided to rescue an orphaned group on Y! I should have known better, but some days I get these crazy ideas¡ Dano |

Thanks for your thoughts, Duane. There's only one Y! group and I want to put the messages into the successor groups.io group. I created the group several years ago, and took it premium?to allow direct adding of members. So the real group already exists. Y! has actually deleted the group on their end in spite of what they said they'd do. I have an open case with them about the issue.

If the data are small enough to not require a premium group, you could create a test group and upload/delete repeatedly until you are satisfied that everything has worked right. Then create the real group, repeat the proven upload procedure, invite the members, and delete the test group. Larry |

Is there a reason why the import couldn't be put right into the message archives? I've rescued an orphaned group and we have the Yahoo zip files for the group. (We also have PGO files.)?The current groups.io archives start from about a year ago, and I recognize the message numbering of the imported messages?would fall into the sequence on the date it was imported.
?
I already have a group that was transferred back when group transfers were just getting started, and there are messages from that date mixed in with the archives as they were downloading. But by displaying messages in chronological order, the message numbers don't particularly matter.
?
Attachments aren't going to reattach anyway, so I don't see why it would matter if the old messages were put into the current archives. Is there something about threading that uses the message numbers?
?
None of my groups have subgroups, and I'd rather not have to create a subgroup which is just likely to confuse many of the members.
?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: GIO changes from Mark
Jim,
Is it too late to move a group from Yahoo? That depends on how much "prep" work you've done. It is too late to use the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer method, and it is too late to use PG Offline or similar tools to download the Yahoo Group content. You still have until Jan 31st to request a Get My Data download from Yahoo. If you already have a PG Offline download you're in pretty good shape with regard to Files and Photos. If you already have a Get My Data download you're in great shape with regard to Messages. See this wiki page for more details: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io I have a group and want to load stuff in two sub-groups but they willNote that the increase was only for groups on a Premium plan. Basic (free) groups still have a 1 GB limit. Since the space has increased, will sub-goups space used beI believe that the original intent was that the storage limit would apply to the sum of the storage in the primary and its subgroups. That hasn't been the case though, and each subgroup has been counting against its own limit. So the answer going forward is murky: I think of the current situation as a "bug" that's bound to get fixed one day. Re: iOS Screen on Browser
Peter,
Any chance someone could pass this note onto Mark Fletcher?Yes - you can! Email to [email protected] and try to include as much detail as you can about the system where you don't see the Actions menu. Device type, iOS version, browser name and version. Plus anything else you can think of that might be relevant. GMF is a user-to-user forum, so none of us have an inside path. Re: Group with same name
Lin,
On Sun, Jan 12, 2020 at 11:58 AM, Lin Duke wrote:Technically, 99% NO and 1% YES. First, by "group name" I take it you mean "email address prefix" really (which is what Groups.io uses for top-level group uniqueness), and not "group title"; the group title can be the same as anything else.? For example, I can create a top-level group, [email protected], and title it " My XYZ group", and you create another top-level group, [email protected], and you can also title it "My XYZ group" .? Groups,io uses the combination of the group email address and the title in the group directory, so in this example one would see "XYZ / My XYZ group" and "ABC / My XYZ group" if they were to search for "XYZ" in the group directory. So the 99% part of NO means, when one creates a group at the top-level (not a subgroup), the name (email address prefix) they choose has to be unique against all other top-level groups, aliases, etc., no way around this.? The group creation screen will tell you if you used an existing name/email address prefix; if I try to name my group ABC and [email protected] already exists, I will have to choose something else. The 1% YES means that you can indeed create a subgroup with the same name/email address prefix as a top-level group, or any other subgroup for that matter, as long as that subgroup's name is not already in your own top-level group as a subgroup (i.e. all your group's subgroups have to have different names / email address prefixes between them ala the top-level restriction mentioned above)? The reason this is allowed is because Groups.io incorporates the subgroup name with the main/top-level email address, so it is now unique.? For example, using the above, example: Top-level [email protected] and [email protected], XYZ group can create a subgroup named "ABC", because the resultant group name (full email address) becomes [email protected] and the URL is now XYZ.groups.io/g/ABC, which are different than the top-level [email protected] and groups.io/g/ABC. Re: GIO changes from Mark
This is great news.? Raising the group space to 20GB.? ? Is it too late to move a group from Yahoo?
Since the space has increased, will sub-goups space used be accumulated into the parent group?? That would be great if it did.? I have a group and want to load stuff in two sub-groups but they will be reference only but both are over 1GB but will be for history and research only. Jim |
