Member list vs. member directory
Andre Polykanine
Hi everyone,
When setting up group permissions, there are two items: member list and member directory. What is the difference, what is the directory for? Thanks! -- With best regards from Ukraine, Andre Skype: menelion_elensule Twitter: @m_elensule; Facebook: menelion |

This still doesn't work quite right. According to the help page, any hashtags in the middle should be duplicated at the end of the subject line. Instead they are moved to the end. In the example shown, "Seeking #advice for a #rosebush with blackened leaves", it becomes "Seeking for a with blackened leaves #advice #rosebush", instead of "Seeking #advice for a #rosebush with blackened leaves #advice #rosebush" as shown. I've notified Support and Mark said the moving action is what is intended. Unless the behavior is changed, you'll need to be careful of hashtag placement. Duane |
Groups.io site updates
#changelog
Hi all,
The last two week's change logs: Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. * Changes to /leave link behavior:This behavior was subsequently changed: * When visiting a /leave link for someone else, display an errorI believe the latter behavior is superior, as most people in this circumstance will be logged in to their own (and only) account - logging them out unexpectedly would be a rude surprise. If you are logged out, you are not then logged in as the personOne thing I haven't tested yet is what you can do at this point. I'm presuming (hoping) that you can unsubscribe even though not logged in. The details on this one are important for email-only subscribers. There's a rather long thread on this in beta@, if you want the details. * Gathering SPF responses on inbound messages for testing/possibleYay! Hopefully this is a prelude to eliminating the need to confirm email commands, in many (most) cases. * Search results have the topics actions dropdown when viewingYay! Another step toward consistency in messages list presentation & controls. Comments about these others are also welcome: CHANGE: Clarification in the help on hashtag behavior. CHANGE: Changes to /leave link behavior: If you are logged in as the person the /leave link belongs to, you are still logged in. I re-ordered the buttons for leaving, putting the 'Leave Group' button last. The email address of the account is now displayed on the page. BUGFIX: The Vote link in poll messages didn't work for some people without permission to add a new poll. CHANGE: Much more accurate count of total search results when using the 'collapse topics' option. BUGFIX: When trying to view a deleted event, now show a banner explaining it's been deleted. BUGFIX: Couldn't approve a pending message from someone who has already unsubscribed and when the group is set to moderate new users. CHANGE: Column hiding when viewing a table is remembered as you page through the table. Also the buttons look nicer. BUGFIX: The /updategroup and /deletegroup API end points returned invalid_permissions when they should not. BUGFIX: We were not processing some bounce emails that were marked as being autoresponder messages. CHANGE: Changed format of ICS files to try to fix erroneous timezone problem with a couple of calendar programs. CHANGE: When creating the #guidelines hashtag when sending the group guidelines, set Mods Only Post and Mods Only Reply to true, and if the guidelines should be sent special, set the tag to Special as well. CHANGE: Wording changes to help and group notices. INTERNAL: Using the search cluster for viewing messages by month/year to take load off main db. BUGFIX: Search results were displayed incorrectly when summaries had HTML unsafe characters. BUGFIX: Fixed email subscription process for some Enterprise sub groups. SYSADMIN: Changed the messages and activities tables autovaccuum scale factor to 0.00. NEW: Added 'Member Page' option to 'More' menu and dropdown when viewing messages. BUGFIX: Fixed subjects for new member notices to match new terminology. BUGFIX: For member notices with HTML links that have text that is the same as the link itself, don't display it double when converting it to plain text. NEW: Generate name tags for people who have RSVPed Yes to an event. Please call out any you find significant. Shal |

Special hashtag useage
Can a moderator/owner, reply to one of their own Special Notices and utilize the "special" hashtag so that this particular reply goes out as a special notice?
We're running a Giving Tuesday fundraiser and I would like to be able to initially send a special notice about a challenge grant and then periodically update the results with a reply that also gets Special Notice action -- Bob Bellizzi The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation |
Re: receive only email addresses under email integrations. what is a good use case for this?
Yeah exactly. I actually use ifttt to post to a email list I'm on every time I post some news article or blog post on my website. It works uite well actually. king of doing the same thing. I'm sure I can come up with a way to try this.

Sarah,
I'm thinking of using this for one of my groups to let a podcast IInteresting. But I don't know of a way to set things up so that podcast postings lacking certain tags would be automatically ignored. Unless you can do it with something like IFTTT. Question two. Would list members still be able to reply to theYes, provided that the group is set to have replies sent to the group. I'm not sure what would happen if Reply To was set to "Sender". Also assuming you didn't use a Hashtag to restrict or moderate replies by members. Shal |

Hmmm...I created an test email integration called test. I was expecting the email address to be [email protected] But in reality is a long unwieldy string of numbers:? test <[email protected]> That really does limit its usefulness... Kevin Conod kdconod@... |

I find that much more sensible (having learned to type on an actual typewriter) and much more convenient -- I don't have to remember or look to see if the Caps Lock is on or not; just starting a sentence normally (Shift key on first char of first word) turns off the caps lock. For some reason Microsoft makes it insanely hard to find the option, rather than putting under "Typing" in the Devices settings. (scroll down to ruggb's reply). I'm thinking of using this for one of my groups to let a podcast I run post as long as i have special tags in said podcast. Yeah I can see where this might come in handy. Let someone try out the list let's say, or if they wanted to guest post an article to the list with the hash #news or what ever. Interesting.

Thanks for this. Question two. Would list members still be able to reply to the message on the list, lets say if they wanted to say something like "man that article was interesting" or "that sucked." or will their messages bounce. I'm thinking they would still be able to reply and give feedback or an opinion etc. Thanks all and happy Friday On Nov 17, 2017, at 1:00 AM, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: |

Re: receive only email addresses under email integrations. what is a good use case for this?
Sarah,
Hello to all. Still getting used to groups.io.Welcome aboard! What is a good use for the email receive only addresses you canIt is one way to let non-members post to your group. You have the choice of whether posts via the integration are Moderated or not, and you can specify a hashtag which is always added to such posts. You might do this to allow a "special guest" to post a message, without requiring that the guest join the group. The guest may not want to be bothered with regular group messages, or you may not want the guest to have member-level access to the group's content. Another possibility would be to allow automatic email notices (from other services) to be posted to the group. Another way to allow non-member posting would be to check the "Allow Non Subscribers to Post" box in the Message Policies section of your group's Settings page. This is in its way more straightforward, but doesn't offer the option of not moderating the posts, nor of automatically adding a hashtag to them. It also runs a somewhat greater risk of spammers posting to it, because the group's posting address is advertised on the group's Home page, as well as being in many members' address books. Despite that risk this is the method I've preferred to use, and I haven't (knock on wood) had a problem with spammers filling up my pending queue. I see you can do hash tags. What can this be used for etc etc etc?Hashtags have a multitude of uses in Groups.io. The most basic is the common function: to categorize message threads (Topics). On the Hashtags page in a group you can click on a hashtag to get a list of all the topics tagged with that hashtag. Members of your list can decide to mute (stop receiving by email) topics containing a given hashtag, or to follow (receive by email) only chosen topics, which can be selected by hashtag as well as individually. Hastags can also be used to modify settings for a particular thread (Topic). Click on the Hashtags page of your group, then click Create Hashtag. On the page that opens you'll see many options that can give your hashtags special capabilities. You can cancel without actually creating a hashtag once you've reviewed the options. Transferring Member Lists
If the initial Groups.io message is sent to their "preferred" email address as designated on the Yahoo group, there shouldn't be a problem with most of them being able to complete the Groups.io login process. For those few who might not be able to do that, will there be a problem with my issuing a new invitation to join after the group list is transferred? Could I then delete their old membership from the transferred list? I understand that it would mean they can't edit old postings, but that shouldn't be an issue with our group. A limited few do all the postings; the majority just read the emailed messages and login occasionally to view new photos.I don¡¯t know exactly what Groups.io did when it transferred my list of 3,000 subscribers and 15 years worth of messages on a very active list. It was seamless. The message sent to members was so clear, I received no questions. Almost 200 people did not confirm the transfer and thus left the list. When I asked a sample why, the response was some form of "I moved out of the neighborhood years ago but never unsubscribed." The transfer gave them an easy way to leave. Particularly since most of them had not a clue how to negotiate the website settings for the group to leave any other way. ¡°Please unsubscribe me¡± was a familiar request. Yahoo became so insistent on getting your phone number and setting up a yahoo email address that many people refused to go to the website to subscribe. I subscribed them directly or they sent and email. Thus they never had a password. I would transfer your members list so it can clean itself, then work with whatever else you need to do later. I put a message on the Yahoo groups¡¯s website and set up a message to be sent to anyone who tried to post to that list giving them the new address. The only people who were confused about the switch were those who rarely post. A year or so after the switch, they would try to post to the old address without realizing they were doing it. But that was a total of 5 out of almost 3,000 members. It was truly amazing. After struggling with Neo for years, I was very happy. Sharon ---- Sharon Villines [email protected] |
Re: Can I transfer messages, photos, & files from a Yahoo group without transferring the member list?
Dotty,
Does the transfer process utilize the member's email addressIt uses the email one (in the Email column of the Manage Members list of the Yahoo group). ... I receive my various group messages at either my Windstream orIf those various groups each transfer to Groups.io, you'll end up with more than one Account at Groups.io - one for each email address. Unlike Yahoo, Groups.io does not (yet) support managing multiple subscription addresses within a single account. I think that can be rectified after the fact by asking [email protected] to merge the accounts. But then you would end up with all the messages going to that one address, which you might not want. ... there shouldn't be a problem with most of them being able toIf they're ok using the address that transferred you don't need to. As a result of the transfer they have been added to your group's Members list - they can receive and send group messages by email. They would only need to log in if they needed to access their account information or your group's members-only content. If they want to change their email address, but can't log in to achieve that, then there's no problem with you sending them an invitation at their desired address. Could I then delete their old membership from the transferred list? That's the only downside I know of, and if for some reason they can't log in using that address then they're stuck with that downside anyway. So you might as well delete the address they won't be using. Thanks for your help, and that of other members! You're most welcome. Shal |
