Re: receive only email addresses under email integrations. what is a good use case for this?

Sarah,

Hello to all. Still getting used to groups.io.
Welcome aboard!

What is a good use for the email receive only addresses you can
generate for a list?
It is one way to let non-members post to your group. You have the choice of whether posts via the integration are Moderated or not, and you can specify a hashtag which is always added to such posts.

You might do this to allow a "special guest" to post a message, without requiring that the guest join the group. The guest may not want to be bothered with regular group messages, or you may not want the guest to have member-level access to the group's content.

Another possibility would be to allow automatic email notices (from other services) to be posted to the group.

Another way to allow non-member posting would be to check the "Allow Non Subscribers to Post" box in the Message Policies section of your group's Settings page. This is in its way more straightforward, but doesn't offer the option of not moderating the posts, nor of automatically adding a hashtag to them.

It also runs a somewhat greater risk of spammers posting to it, because the group's posting address is advertised on the group's Home page, as well as being in many members' address books. Despite that risk this is the method I've preferred to use, and I haven't (knock on wood) had a problem with spammers filling up my pending queue.

I see you can do hash tags. What can this be used for etc etc etc?
Hashtags have a multitude of uses in Groups.io. The most basic is the common function: to categorize message threads (Topics). On the Hashtags page in a group you can click on a hashtag to get a list of all the topics tagged with that hashtag. Members of your list can decide to mute (stop receiving by email) topics containing a given hashtag, or to follow (receive by email) only chosen topics, which can be selected by hashtag as well as individually.

Hastags can also be used to modify settings for a particular thread (Topic). Click on the Hashtags page of your group, then click Create Hashtag. On the page that opens you'll see many options that can give your hashtags special capabilities. You can cancel without actually creating a hashtag once you've reviewed the options. See also:
