Re: Group features
Barbara Jean,
?
OK, I am new to the io groups, currently in the process of moving my yahoo groups to io.? GMF's wiki has some pages of interest when moving from Yahoo Groups. One is our collection of notes regarding the Easy Group Transfer, another is information about using Direct Add to bring in member email addresses, and a third is about Inviting members.
When would one use the hashtag feature?? One aspect of hashtags, and in particular the Hashtag page in the navigation list (the left-hand column) is that they are a way to make a collection of messages for easy reference. Click on a Hashtag on that page and it brings up a search result with all of the messages that have that hashtag in the Subject line. So that works best when there are some specific recurring topics in the group.
?
Another aspect of hashtags, that goes hand-in-hand with the first, is that members can choose to follow a hashtag, or to mute it, as a way of controlling which email messages they want to receive by email. Being able to mute a hashtag or a topic is an individual member's choice, as is using the Advanced Preferences section of their subscription to follow only certain topics rather than receive all group messages.
?
A third aspect of hashtags is that they offer options to control the behavior of topics. This aspect, defining options for a hashtag is open only to moderators, one of the options is whether members can then use the hashtag, or only moderators.
?
When do you use the Wiki feature.? You've seen GMF's usage as a kind of reference work, containing pages such as those linked above. That's the general idea, but it doesn't have to be technical information - it can be a place to consolidate any kind of information that is of recurring interest to group members. Because the pages are easily edited (same editing tools as Groups.io's New Topic or Reply features) a wiki page is easier to keep up to date than a text file or document stored in the Files section.
?
Are these limited to the group moderator or available for the group members to use. That's up to the group management (owners/moderators). The Settings page sets some overall limits, and the individual features have some control options as well.

Re: Member not showing in Member Directory
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThey will need to go to their account in the upper right hand corner, click on Identity, then click "Edit" to the right of their Account Profile.? Scroll down to "Profile Privacy" and make sure to select "Other members of your groups" instead
of "Only group owners and moderators".? This should make their profile show up in the Member Directory.

It still won't repost after changing the setting to 1 day. ?That was a good idea, though. ?I thought it might work. ?But sadly it didn't.

Our group is basically an Emergency Management Group.? We activate to support area hospitals/large nursing homes in the event of a hurricane, disaster, etc.? We activate as requred to provide emergency communications via our 2-meter communications network.? With that background ......
We would like to restrict access to our ACTIVATION files to only select individuals.? Owner or moderator access levels would work for us. No need for further breakdown. Groups.io is working great for us.? Would like to keep all actions within G.i. Thank you Bobby N5VCU |

Re: Group features
One use for hashtags that I have found useful is to use them to send
toggle quoted message
Show quoted text
messages via email that are marked as Special Notices. We have a couple of hashtags like "#Meeting" that signal they are an announcement about an upcoming event. They are set so that only moderators can use them and so the message they are on will be sent as a special notice. This way our moderators can send announcements without having to log into the web page. This can be useful if you are trying to send one from your phone for example. This way you can just send it as you do any email. Jonathan On 8/26/2019 6:06 PM, Barbara Jean Jasen wrote:

Re: A group member asked this question.
Barbara Jean, the member must log into the group homepage on Groups.io and go to Subscription on the left menu. She can edit her profile, add a photo, etc.
Or on the homepage, go to Profile in top right corner. You can set an email alias, i.e. another account might want to send email from. Note that you don't receive any email to that second account. You asked about exporting the account. Not sure. Never tried. I see that in Settings, you have this option: Allow Members To Download Archives
Allow group members to download the message archives.
Likely someone else will answer this. Good help in the wiki - but do ask! Some help for owners/moderators and some help for group members. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Frances -- /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |

Re: Group features
Hi Barbara Jean,
A few brief answers! Hashtags - I like them but some people and groups don't make a lot of use of them. They help organize discussions. You can create some ones you know that would be useful For my family group, I use #travel #Christmas #reunion etc. You can search just for messages with hashtags. And you can add them after the fact if someone hasn't used them. But you can ignore them if you like! The large travel group I belong to doesn't use them. In Settings, Message policies, you can decide who can create hashtags. Wiki - On Group Managers Forum, the wiki is a help page. On the travel forum, it is a collection of useful travel links, organized by topic. On my family group, I used it to create pages on each port of call on our cruise - for planning purposes. Normally it is a group effort. A classic example is Wikipedia. In Settings, Wiki (just scroll down on the settings page), you can decide who can read, edit, etc. The help wiki for this group is readable / usable by anyone, but only group members can write / edit. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Frances -- /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |

#email [privacy and sharing addresses]

For privacy, we mask members email addresses in our group.? We also have our group set as "reply to group" because we want to encourage whole group discussion.? ? However, from time to time a member WANTS other people to contact them and will list their email address in a message to the group.? These email addresses are being shortened to the point where no one else can figure out what the actual email address is.? For example, it may say "lisa.franklin@"? ?
How can I advise members who want to post their email so that people can contact them??? Thanks, in advance, for your ideas! |

A group member asked this question.
Hi Barbara, ? I just signed up for io group (I think). When I access the update profile feature I do not see any place to enter name, photo, etc. What else should I do? Also, what does "export my account" do? ? Hugs, Carole OK, so how do I respond, what do I tell her? Barbara Jean |
