Re: Creating an alias
Mike,
Same answer as before. The affected people already logged into Groups.io using their Winlink address, or they used the +subscribe email address From their Winlink address to create a membership in your group (or some other group). Either of those actions creates a Groups.io account with that as its primary address (meaning it logs in using that address). Either way, the Groups.io account which logs in using that Winlink address must be deleted before the address is free to be used as an Alias for another account. There cannot be two accounts claiming the same email address. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Change members email address
Lavon, Can I as an owner/moderator change a members email address for them as requested??? No, To properly maintain their subscription they must do that through their Account page. They could join again (or you could Invite/Add them) under their new address, but that would be a new subscription -- a whole new person as far as Groups.io is concerned. Then you could remove their old address from your Members list. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Creating an alias
Mike Cohen
Duane & Shal, Thank you both for responding to my request.? Sorry for this long description below, but here's some additional info that might shed some light on our problem. Our goal to to have [email protected] accept un-moderated e-mails from the Winlink e-mail system. NFARES stands for North Fulton Amateur Radio Emergency Services, a team of licensed amateur radio operators in Georgia who use the Winlink e-mail system to send e-mails by radio.? We send some of these e-mails by radio (through a distant station connected to the Internet) to [email protected], which is set up to accept moderated incoming messages from non-members.? Everyone who uses the Winlink system has a unique address that is their amateur radio callsign plus , so mine is ad4mc@....? In order for [email protected] to accept an un-moderated e-mail from callsign@..., that address has to either be added to the member list, which would effectively double the number of members or add the callsign@... address as an alias so that it can be un-moderated.?Three of our members have successfully added thier callsign@... as an alias, but others get the Already Registered message.? Both callsign@... and alias callsign@... members can send un-moderated Winlink e-mails to [email protected]. We don't understand why some aliases are accepted and others are shown as Already Registered. Thanks again, Mike On Wed, Mar 13, 2019 at 1:10 AM Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: Mike, |
Re: member approved by accident
One of the most important reasons for using a web form as an application is that you can make any or all fields mandatory and, if you have a bit of expertise with them, define the type and format of the info you collect so that they can't just put spaces into a field.
And you could always hold up approval until you get what you require. Just be sure you can justify all of the info you require is needed for the security or mission of the group -- Bob Bellizzi Founder, Fuchs Friends?? |
Re: email address from sender
Michael, I note that at one place it says that the email address of the sender of a message will be readable by all members who receive postings and notifications via email. This is correct. It shows in the From field of the message. Depending on your email interface you may have to "Show Details" or something like that to see the actual address rather than just the Display part, but the address is there in the field. This is completely normal for email lists. That seems to undermine the privacy concepts that are embodied in such features as having a single email address to deliver postings to all the members... That's not a privacy concept. It is a functionality concept - an email list offers a way to correspond with hundreds or thousands of list members with a single email message; something that can't usually be done with the BCC field of your email interface (you're normally limited in the number of addresses you can send to in one message). List services also typically offer storage of messages (an archive) so that they can be read later by new list members. and it undermines the concept of Muting in general since a bad player who doesn't like a given posting has the information necessary to attact the posting member's email account directly. Muting in Groups.io doesn't mean that. It lets you stop receiving messages in given topics or hashtags, but not (so far) from specific list members. If you want to block an individual you can still do that in your email interface -- which you wouldn't be able to do if that member's address wasn't in the From field. Surely it would be a better idea for the posting to be shown as FROM Group io so that the posting member's email address is not exposed. There were extensive discussions in the (Suggestion box) on the topic of having Anonymous groups which would work that way. But it has not been implemented (and does not seem to be a priority). Here are some topics that mention it: ? ?Doesn't that make sense?? Why does is it not done that way? It makes sense for some use cases. In many use cases though the ability to contact group members off-list by way of their (exposed) email address is considered an advantage. Some groups, such as Freecycle/Freegle style groups, default their Replies to the sender, because the posting is basically a classified ad, and the people who want give or take the object make those arrangements off-list. In my classmates groups we all know each other IRL and exposing our email addresses among us is not a concern - contact with each other is why we have an email list at all. It isn't done that way because that's not what an email list is. I would argue that use cases that require privacy at the level of not even exposing an email address are likely use cases that would find a better home using a web forum or some other means of communication. Re: Customizing home page
Larry, Being brand new to groups, I was curious to see if there is a way to customize the he page. ? There are the controls in the General section of the group's Settings page that Frances mentioned. They add information to the group's home page. Except the Group Email Address, you don't want to change that unless you really want/need to. Then the Cover Photo tab lets you add a Cover Photo and an Icon. If your group is on the Enterprise plan there is the Fully customizable home page feature. I don't have any Enterprise groups so I'm not sure what capabilities that gives you. member approved by accident
Hi,
If one of the moderators accidentally approved a member before we had all the info that he met our group's requirements, what are our options? I'm assuming there's not a way to put him back to unapproved... I have already reached out to this member asking for the missing info and have not heard back as of yet. Thanks, Su |

Re: Customizing home page
You can add a photo - in Admin, Settings, Cover Photo.? Too much mail? ?Use Subscription in the left menu for delivery options. Try Advanced Preferences. Or use the footers in your email to tailor delivery options for specific threads. Files, photos, wiki, older messages - all available here on the group's homepage.

Re: suddenly many yahoo.com members are bouncing, but not all of them
Oddly, my travel group has 549 Yahoo Mail users. Only a half dozen were bouncing. Thanks for the heads up, Ruthie!
The message I see in Email Delivery History tab is: This mailbox is disabled (554.30) It seems one has been bouncing since March 1, 2019, a couple for just the last few days. BTW, I am happy to have the search box at the top of the members so I could just find all the Yahoo ones quickly! yes, i have sent bounce probes...any other info on this situation?About a year ago, Yahoo had a bunch of issues with their mail servers (see /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/14788994). Groups would send people messages but they would bounce with a 500-level error to the effect that "that account does not exist." So you should definitely check the Email Delivery History per Shal's recommendation to see if something similar is happening. If so, it will resolve itself when sufficient number of the service users contact Yahoo and complain. For what it's worth, my main group has 20 subscribers that use Yahoo Mail and none of them are experiencing delivery problems. ? Good luck, Bruce -- The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |
