Re: Transferring a Yahoo group without Moderator access
Dan,
Our owner has been AOL since 2005.? Some believe he did die.? We have no ability to prove otherwise. Also, our only standing moderator on YG has little more than the average user for permissions.? He can not even replace himself as a moderator and make a new person that role. Short of the story, We opted for the PGOffline software.? Exported all the messages into a pipe character format CSV file.? Cleaned out the SPMA, yahoo & AOL ads and all the porn messages for the message database. Lastly, we saved the archive in Excel's extended spread sheet format .xlsx, OpenOffice format? ods, HTML format and the raw CSV format because users are global and the world is not all into MicroSoft products. We find the spreadsheet format works BEST for searching for works, subject line and members.? Also one can filter their searches in the columns too.? This is way better than migrating over the messages and poking around. We have 4 groups coming across.? Mainly the CUT tractors that folks use on homesteads, farms and the like.? The food on your plate has a good chance of being from one of our members!? Especially if it's organic.? We have to save our history because without it, prices in farm Ag can rise sharply due to inability to repair the tractors.? We have now engaged a 5th group of CUT tractors off of YG as well by another brand of CUT tractor to make the hop here too.? With the closing of YG as we know it today, it has put a good deal of stress on all kinds of folks globally.? The John Deere CUT group moved ahead of us.? We are the 2nd largest group to follow and the 4th largest group just was alerted about the YG closing last night.? Shame on Yahoo not send folks a notice.? That banner above the groups can only be seen If you login to see it! It is a mad dash to get all of this done prior to the 29th of this month.? There is lots of uncertainty how thing will work from December 1st to midnight on Friday the 13th of December when the YG goes dark.? Bret |

I had thought that unusual as well, assuming they would be attributed to me as the original G.io owner and "transferrer".? It didn't create a problem, as I could correct the attributions if I wanted to, but I did question the logic. :) Coincidentally, these orphaned items included many originally owned by me (albeit under a different email address I was using in the Yahoo Group, and which was not subscribed to the new G.io.)? This observation prompted me to change by Yahoo Group email address to the same one I use on Groups.io before initiating the recent transfer of another group to G.io.? With the second transfer, my photos and files retained the correct attribution to me.? Lesson learned! Dotty Bell |
Re: Edit emails and confirm members (feature)
Ok, 1st part clear. 2nd part... not sure.
By normal email channel, do you mean using the [email protected] method of subscribing? And then the Premium extra bit to "confirm an email/account that's new to GIO"... if someone creates a new GIO account, then we could confirm someone trying to subscribe with that rather than by email? I've not seen this in action so I can't quite picture it ;-) I'm imagining the new GIO account person would then search the list of GIO groups, select my group, and ask to be a member on their GIO home page. So, without being a Premium account we couldn't accept such requests? |
Yahoo still updating?
Their banner message states "New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019."
But the Conversations view on the web continues to update. This is a surprising and pleasing finding. The timestamps on the six most-recent messages are: 13 hours ago 3 days ago 4 days ago 4 days ago 4 days ago 5 days ago It's taking a bit of time to migrate over as I work through the issues of dealing with attachments because of the short-sighted view of Groups.io on handling them. Fortunately, the Yahoo group continues to serve us. |

Edit emails and confirm members (feature)
I've looked around and couldn't find the answer to this. The groups.io feature-list by plan level indicates that "Edit emails and confirm members" starts only at the Premium level. Does this mean that Basic plans are open to the public, and that only Premium levels can moderate whether a member can subscribe? I hope this isn't so and is just a wording issue. Since we had to join at the Premium level to do the YG transfer I can't really tell if we would lose this ability if we eventually switched to Basic.

Moderated/Unmoderated postings
Rob Robinson
Set up and transferred group from Yahoo threeweeks ago. No problem and everything running smoothly!
Since it is a restricted group (approval needed to join), I allow postings without moderation. Within the last several days, something has changed (not on my part), where I am now getting via email requests for approving messages by members who are already subscribers. Anyone have any idea on what is going on? Am I missing something? Rob Robinson |
Re: Transferring a Yahoo group without Moderator access
PG4 allows downloading of archives by any member and does not need to be a owner or moderator. With PG4 at least you have a copy of the archives and they are not lost when Yahoo deletes them. That's what I have done as a backup for my groups. The fact that GIO has caughtup with transfers is remarkable and kudos to Mark and all others working on GIO. Re: Transferring a Yahoo group without Moderator access
Dan, Has anyone ever gotten a response from "[email protected]"? Most assuredly so. I have many times. But I haven't made any requests since the flood from Yahoo started (mid-October). I have a CSV of all the members, You can bring that into Excel, and use cell functions to format them as DisplayName <user@...> (if you have display name data) then copy that column from Excel to paste into either the Invite or Direct Add page. and I have a download of the message archives from Yahoo that I'd like to install in the new account. That's trickier. In ages past support has been willing to accept an mbox format file for import to a group, but I haven't seen anyone report that being done for quite some time. If your archive is in a different format your mileage may definitely vary. But we are willing to pay for a premium account to have it "done right". So That depends on how patient you are. I'd be inclined to wait because all of the alternatives are so messy. Except perhaps making the export available as a File in the Groups.io group and telling members how to read that file. Do they not want our money? Maybe. I know that the transfer agent exports messages from Yahoo Groups in mbox files, and then imports to Groups.io from that. So it seems like it could be a good idea, after Yahoo takes down web access to their groups, for Groups.io to adapt the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer mechanism to accepting archives, at least in that format. Seems to me, that is. But I don't know what they might expect the ROI on such an endeavor to be, nor do I have insight as to any policy they might want to have for ensuring that the transfer is in some sense "legit". So after invite groups.io <> to my groups / should I put a request they all be moved to subgroups or will it be done automatically to a main group? No, it really doesn't work that way. You need to read and follow the instructions here: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups Here's a summary to get you started for your particular situation: 1. Create a new group at Groups.io, with an umbrella name. I suggest "[email protected]". /creategroup (remember to set your group so that only the owner can create subgroups) 2. Then, create a subgroup called "WA". This will cause your main group to get renamed to "[email protected]". The subgroup's full name will be "[email protected]". /g/recruit/createsubgroup 3. Then, buy "Premium Yearly" membership. /g/recruit/plans 4. Then, follow the Easy Transfer procedures, and when you get to the point where you tell them which Yahoogroup to transfer into which Groups.io group, MAKE SURE you ask that "WARecruit@..." is transferred to [email protected] (and NOT to [email protected]). /yahootransfer 5. Then repeat step 2 for all the other subgroups that have the most members and the most archives, and step 4 for each transfer from Yahoogroups to the relevant Groups.io subgroup. I'm not sure if you would be able to do multiple transfers simultaneously. You can certainly try to invite the transfer agent to more than one Yahoogroups group at the same time. Samuel |
Re: Transferring Question - To Subgroups.
I have 50 yahoogroups (USA) and 20 (countries) = 70.Would it be less confusing to make a few main groups? Perhaps one for USA with subgroups and one for non-USA with subgroups? Or even a finer breakdown? Obviously it will cost more if you want / need Groups.io to transfer your groups from Yahoo Groups for you. Transferring to a subgroup is free (but frankly not sure that Mark was thinking of 69 subgroups!). But I think you would find it less confusing to manage.?
