Re: Transferring a Yahoo group without Moderator access

Dan,

Has anyone ever gotten a response from "[email protected]"?

Most assuredly so. I have many times.

But I haven't made any requests since the flood from Yahoo started (mid-October).

I have a CSV of all the members,

You can bring that into Excel, and use cell functions to format them as
DisplayName <user@...>
(if you have display name data)
then copy that column from Excel to paste into either the Invite or Direct Add page.

and I have a download of the message archives from Yahoo that I'd like to install in the new account.

That's trickier.

In ages past support has been willing to accept an mbox format file for import to a group, but I haven't seen anyone report that being done for quite some time. If your archive is in a different format your mileage may definitely vary.

But we are willing to pay for a premium account to have it "done right". So
I'm wondering: is there any point to waiting for a response from
[email protected] or should I just go ahead and do what I can myself.

That depends on how patient you are. I'd be inclined to wait because all of the alternatives are so messy. Except perhaps making the export available as a File in the Groups.io group and telling members how to read that file.

Do they not want our money?

Maybe.

I know that the transfer agent exports messages from Yahoo Groups in mbox files, and then imports to Groups.io from that. So it seems like it could be a good idea, after Yahoo takes down web access to their groups, for Groups.io to adapt the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer mechanism to accepting archives, at least in that format.

Seems to me, that is. But I don't know what they might expect the ROI on such an endeavor to be, nor do I have insight as to any policy they might want to have for ensuring that the transfer is in some sense "legit".
