for instance i run a couple psp groups....in the groups we don't use hastags or the wiki, same for incredimail groups, I wouldn't use those features.? now in another closed group i'm in where we do some collective writing...the wiki is awesome reference tool for us as a whole.....just depends on the kind of group as to whether you will want to use or ignore those features

Re: A group member asked this question.

Barbara Jean, the member must log into the group homepage on Groups.io and go to Subscription on the left menu. She can edit her profile, add a photo, etc.
Or on the homepage, go to Profile in top right corner. You can set an email alias, i.e. another account might want to send email from. Note that you don't receive any email to that second account.

You asked about exporting the account. Not sure. Never tried. I see that in Settings, you have this option:
Allow Members To Download Archives
Allow group members to download the message archives.

Likely someone else will answer this.

Good help in the wiki - but do ask!

Re: Group features

Hi Barbara Jean,

A few brief answers!

Hashtags - I like them but some people and groups don't make a lot of use of them. They help organize discussions. You can create some ones you know that would be useful For my family group, I use #travel #Christmas #reunion etc. You can search just for messages with hashtags. And you can add them after the fact if someone hasn't used them. But you can ignore them if you like! The large travel group I belong to doesn't use them.
In Settings, Message policies, you can decide who can create hashtags.

Wiki - On Group Managers Forum, the wiki is a help page. On the travel forum, it is a collection of useful travel links, organized by topic. On my family group, I used it to create pages on each port of call on our cruise - for planning purposes. Normally it is a group effort. A classic example is Wikipedia.
In Settings, Wiki (just scroll down on the settings page), you can decide who can read, edit, etc. The help wiki for this group is readable / usable by anyone, but only group members can write / edit.

#email [privacy and sharing addresses] #email

Lisa Franklin

For privacy, we mask members email addresses in our group.? We also have our group set as "reply to group" because we want to encourage whole group discussion.? ? However, from time to time a member WANTS other people to contact them and will list their email address in a message to the group.? These email addresses are being shortened to the point where no one else can figure out what the actual email address is.? For example, it may say "lisa.franklin@"? ?

How can I advise members who want to post their email so that people can contact them???

Thanks, in advance, for your ideas!

A group member asked this question.

Hi Barbara,

?

I just signed up for io group (I think). When I access the update profile feature I do not see any place to enter name, photo,

etc. What else should I do? Also, what does "export my account" do?

?

Hugs, Carole

OK, so how do I respond, what do I tell her?

I should explain my comment "This is the main reason the option to merge threads was developed."
?
We see a number of people use the latest thread they've received to reply to a previous post. It makes no sense to me, but some folks are just glad they can get their thoughts to the group. Perhaps this has made me just a bit jaded about the subject.

Depending on the demographics of your group, It may not all be laziness, Bruce. I have a number of members who don't even understand that they can actually change a subject of a thread and may not really know how to start a new subject. We're a historic group, and the old-timers have all the good stories and so?are very valuable to us?that way. We keep several of them on moderation so we can intercept and fix those posts and other problems.

Let us know what you come up with. As with any subset of the human population, there is that bottom 10% that will ignore all your pleas and just do what is easiest for them. Many of them will probably never have read your earlier post. Just look back at [GMF] and see how often the same questions recur. This is the main reason the option to merge threads was developed.

Good luck!

Gradually drifting off-topic I can tolerate. What I'm talking about is posting something totally unrelated to the subject line.

A suggestion would be to delete the post and notify the sender to resubmit it with a new subject line. Would that work?
It would work if the group was moderated...but that would be punishing everyone for the transgressions of a few.

Back to my original question: "Does anyone has a good member notice written up to discourage this behavior?"

I'm looking for a gently-worded warning about what thread hijacking is and why it is bad that I can send to them before?taking the next step (i.e.: putting that individual on moderation).

Bruce, I have had this same thing happen in the past in my groups (only recently switching from yahoo to io.? And I admit that I myself have been a bit guilty of it.
Mostly in the case of my groups it has been where one topic just merged into something new.
