Re: from "email via Groups.io" #bug

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

My mistake
With yahoo and AOL accounts everyone sees it.
I thought one of the people who sent mail in my group was using gmail.
She was using Ymail.
Sorry, Ilene

In this case, we're talking about a GMAIL account.? There are other services, such as Yahoo, that require it to be done on all emails.

No, it happens to everyone that has a gmail address.? They (and you) will only see it on the posts you make when they come back to your email account.

Re: Video or Phone Chat option? #chats

You must be a youngster.? That's an acoustic modem as was used on the Teletype 33/35.? The great-grandfather of texting! ;>)

All chats are strictly text.? There are many other sites that are designed for phone or video conferencing.

Video or Phone Chat option? #chats

Hi all,
On the Chats function, there is a phone emblem. Is there a way to hold group chats via phone or video conference? If so, is it an upgrade to a paid level or is it something I just don't see how to do?
Thank you,
Angie

I don't think this is necessarily true any more. Mark recently changed things so that every time you visit the site, your password/login cookie is renewed/extended. If you don't go 30 days without visiting, and don't delete cookies, your login never expires.
OK, then the ¡¯30 day¡¯ part of the explanation needs updating/correction

Re: from "email via Groups.io" #bug

I brought this issue to the group quite sometime ago and was told it must have been my email provider doing it.? So I changed my email address to a gmail address and all was fine for about a month and now it has started doing it again.? So far, I am the only one in our group that it's happening to.

Well, I ran a message through ShalsTest and the message header did show it coming back from?main(at)shalstest(dot)groups(dot)io.

And so...I sit corrected.

Not sure why this is important, as both addresses still work. Just tell your subscribers what's going to happen and hopefully they won't be "spooked."

Naming main group and sub groups

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I¡¯ve located and read through an exchange on this topic from about two years ago (#6639), but can¡¯t find anything more recent.

?

Is it still the case that the email address for the main group is automatically re-named when a sub-group is created? I appreciate that the ¡°old¡± address would become an alias for the ¡°new¡± address, but I fear many of my subscribers will be spooked by the appearance of a different address (ie [email protected] rather than my [email protected]).

?

Any chance a work-around has been developed since this exchange in 2016? It¡¯s essential that I maintain the original email address name, so would have to create brand-new ¡°umbrella¡± groups for my sub-groups in order to leave the name of the main group intact, which kinda defeats the purpose of this otherwise great feature.

?

Thanks.

Lance,

Ok, this is what it seems to have been. Thanks for the reminder on
this setting. I had known about it, but forgot about it.
I'm actually surprised by that. I wouldn't have guessed that very many people use those Advanced Preferences, but if you see the FF badge on their rows in the Members list then that would indeed explain it.

Also a little surprising that a member who went to the effort of making that choice would later forget they'd done so and complain to the group managers about missing replies... Or maybe I shouldn't be surprised. ;-)

Hello,
yes, on the date before March 15 is all OK. But what with this?
Thanks...

Richard

7. 12. 2018 v 19:22, Duane <txpigeon@...>:

I'm reasonably sure this has to do with Daylight Saving Time. If it won't be a serious inconvenience, try setting up something for March 15, 2019 (just before the time change in the US) to see if that works okay. If so, I think this will verify the difference.

Re: Default password?

Shal did a good rewrite of
"GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Set-a-Personal-Password-and-Profile%3B-Changing-Email-Address"
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Set-a-Personal-Password-and-Profile%3B-Changing-Email-Address
which said:

| Setting Your Own Password
| Maybe you are using the default password that Groups.io set for you when you were moved over from Yahoo! Groups or Google Groups.

What is this 'default password?
Does it refer to the temporary password (login link) that any Groups.io user can get at any time - if so this is misleading verbiage - or something else?

Chris said:
| Now for most purposes the precise terminology is of little or no matter
No, this is only true among people who already understand and don¡¯t need an explanation.
Sloppy ¡®explanations¡¯ are more likely to NOT enlighten people who do need accurate information.
Most of the confusion of users and traffic on GMF is a consequence.
Groups.io would be better served with accurate and reliable wording.

I¡¯d also like to see better verbiage and consistent usage, especially for:

Groups.io two levels of users:
¡°Subscribers¡±: Those who use email only and have never accessed the website by logging in.
¡°Members¡±: Those who login to the website with a password, including a ¡®login link¡¯ (a temporary password).

Passwords/login links
To say users can access the website without a password by using a ¡®login link¡¯ is misleading as ¡®login links¡¯ are merely temporary passwords. There is no difference in what access they enable, only the duration of access. ¡®Login links¡¯ should always include the explanation that they are temporary (30 day) passwords, and the suggestion to create a permanent password along with the explanation of how little effort is required to ¡®upgrade¡¯ a login link to a (permanent) password.

Re: spoofing

One Marvin to another-- I think you have to step up on this one yourself. Clearly, some crud-ball did something nasty to you, but it appears that it was done by breaking into your gmail account. It's your job to make that as difficult as possible. Were you phished? Did you follow best practices for avoiding being phished? There is a ton of information out there on how to avoid being phished. Even the most knowledgeable and care get taken sometimes, but were you up on your anti-phishing game?

Or was your gmail password weak? Password managers like LastPass make strong passwords manageable. Google offers multi-factor authentication. If you are not using multi, think about it. I don't know a single computer security professional who does not recommend using multi-factor.

I don't mean to shame you. I've been caught myself, but if you don't do your best to protect yourself, you're shorting yourself. It would be wonderful if Mark could do more to increase Groups.io security, but computing today is built on an insecure foundation and he can only do so much. (Mark-- That's not an excuse to slack off on security-- just a note of understanding!) It's a tough world and no one is in a better position to take care of you than you are to take care of yourself.

I don't mean to self-promote, but I post personal computer security suggestions on my site marvinwaschke.com that might be helpful.
Best, Marv

Re: Adding Via Groups IO to my sender name

Nope .. doesn't require anything else. The mail all arrives and folks get mine. The gmail addy did have to be an addon though with my eastlink account as the main sign in.
I've explained to a few of the ladies in my group who were having problems and it worked for them too.

Ellen,

Isn't the option to use your .. I call it my main addy ... instead of
the gmail addy work for you? I ended up doing that. I write all my
email under miz.elly@ but my "paid for" addy is ellen@ Once I added
that and made it my main address, I had no more issues.
Posting from one address, while receiving at another is one work-around;
one can do that with an Email Alias address in your account (or a second
account and subscription).

With Gmail as your provider you might not even need a second email
address, just use a "dotted" form for one of them (shals.2nd versus
shals2nd, for example).

I'm not sure though that I'd consider that any less a PITA than putting
up with the From rewriting. Though I suppose once you've got it set it
up right it may not require further effort.

Re: Missing incoming messages for two days?

Thanks for the reminder.
Nothing strange showing in Activity except lack therof.
We are typically a high activity group.? Almost 170,000 messages & 3300 members.
It's just atypical of our usual activity otherwise I wouldn't ask.
