Isn't the option to use your .. I call it my main addy ... instead of
the gmail addy work for you? I ended up doing that. I write all my
email under miz.elly@ but my "paid for" addy is ellen@ Once I added
that and made it my main address, I had no more issues.
Posting from one address, while receiving at another is one work-around; one can do that with an Email Alias address in your account (or a second account and subscription).

With Gmail as your provider you might not even need a second email address, just use a "dotted" form for one of them (shals.2nd versus shals2nd, for example).

I'm not sure though that I'd consider that any less a PITA than putting up with the From rewriting. Though I suppose once you've got it set it up right it may not require further effort.
