Re: questions about bouncing

If you're working with folks directly (not via the group email), you could have them check their own status:
"Any user can view their own bounce history by going into the Subscription page of their groups and clicking on Email Delivery History, or by going into their Account page and clicking on Recent Bounces."

Re: Plan to be either Premium or Enterprise, but no Transfer Available

Bill,

We need to port the members, messages, photos and files.

Premium and Enterprise groups get priority for support and for transfers. The pricing page used to say that, but Mark took down that row in the table because he wasn't able to articulate what "priority" means.

Still, if you're planning on an upgraded group (and especially Enterprise) that might provide Mark at Groups.io with extra motivation to work out whatever it is that Yahoo / Verizon Media did this time. You, and he, will probably both be hesitant to make actual commitments, but just knowing it is a possibility may tip the scales a bit, especially if he knows of others too.

Re: questions about bouncing

Holly

I did, as I stated, go to the wikis, and read that section. It didn't answer the questions I posted here. Fortunately one member of my list, at my request, forwarded the email she received. So, for those who are interested:

The bounce probe actually goes to the bouncing member's email address.

It explains that email delivery has stopped to that member because of bounces, and gives several possible causes for bouncing.

And it provides a link the recipient can click on for unbouncing the member's account.

My friend used the link and was unbounced immediately. The other bouncing addresses were for members who are less computer-savvy, so may have to do some hand-holding, but at least I know how this process works now. It would be nice if the wikis could be updated with this information, so list owners who've never been through this process before know exactly what to tell the bouncing members to expect.

No, I'm not volunteering to do that - my understanding is sketchy and I've never edited a wiki in my life! :)

For your convenience, I will say that:
* Bouncing is an /account/ status, not a group status.
* The bounce probe contains a link that the subscriber must click on
to unbounce their account.
* There is no way to send yourself a copy of the probe, or to "check
on bounce probe status." The best you can do is check the email
delivery history again to see if it was delivered.
* Save for sending additional bounce probes, there is little that you,
as a group owner, can do to resolve a bouncing account.
Please also note that 400-level errors usually indicate a temporary condition, such that the message in question could subsequently be delivered. There are several good resources on the web to help you sort out SMTP error codes -- one of them is here <>.
Hope this helps,
Bruce

There have been several threads here in GMF over the past year regarding delivery problems with charter/rr/spectrum, including mail server downtime, inadequate capacity, and even greylisting of the groups.io domain. Glib as it may sound, this suggests that the best advice you could give your subscriber may be to find another service provider.

Re: How can we delete attachment storage to keep from bouncing

Normal Service has been resumed!

I have not been able to confirm that the deletion of an attached photograph (not the message to which it was attached) results in an "edit notification" of any sort. I uploaded an attached photo as an ordinary member to a certain test group. I then changed status (different log in) to a that of a moderator and released the message, which duly appeared in the web UI. I received an email (with the attachment) to my ordinary member's email address as normal. I then deleted the photo; the "Edited" flag duly appeared on the web UI but no notification of the edit was sent to my "member's" email address.

So is the assertion that members are notified if an attached photo they emailed is deleted actually true? I accept that it might have been once but at the moment... it would appear not. It certainly didn't work for me.

Well, I sit corrected. It seems that:
  • Deleting an attachment from a message generates a notification to the original post-er and the message shows as Edited.
  • Deleting a photo from a message (using the Edit Message function) does the same.
  • Deleting a photo from the Emailed Photos folder shows the message as Edited but does not generate a notification.
I will update the corresponding wiki page accordingly, but it would help if others could confirm this behavior.

Does deleting the original message notify its sender?
Not that I'm aware of.

Your best bet would be to keep an eye on the thread about it by joining the beta group, .? At the very least, there will be an announcement if it becomes available again, though it may be a new topic.

I have a local broadband failure here so at the moment I'm working via a data dongle? and I don't want to guzzle PAYG data by playing with photos!

We plan to move the Yahoo Amel Yacht Owners Group (1500 members) to?. We need to port the members, messages, photos and files. Can you tell me the contact information of the person who can answer when the "Easy Yahoo Group Transfer" might be available?

Re: questions about bouncing

A note on this subject, of a problem that I am having.

I have 8 equestrian?groups here in New Zealand, that I am the only moderator of. Our Telco?ISP is called xtra, which is my ISP.?I have put my own email address in each group so I know that any email I send to groups.io is sent out. All was working well, then I noticed? I was only getting returns from some groups, very intermittent! Then I got an email from groups.io to unbounce my account. I did this and started doing some investigations, and found that of the approx. 1600 addresses in my groups,?over 400 of the "xtra"?address had the red "B" (Bounced)?against them. Addresses with other ISP's are working fine.

I have tried sending some of them a bounce probe, doesn't work as xtra has blocked anything from groups.io! Unless they have unbounced their account.

Now trying to get xtra to lift the block on groups.io, then I will need to send an email to all the xtra addresses directly to not treat the "unbounce" link as a spam or phishing email, as I thought it was when I first saw it.

The cause that started it: I use Thunderbird for my emails. If I put an attachment into the box at the top with the lines in it, and send it to groups.io to be sent out, xtra would bounce them! If I put the attachment into the body of the email, it works fine. Very odd.

Hope I get some sense from xtra soon.

?

Barry.

Another option, if it is to be sent repeatedly but not monthly or otherwise isn't appropriate for Group Guidelines, is to make it a repeating event in the Calendar. Set the event without checking "invite the group" and without any reminders, just notify when the event occurs. The result is a message with some boilerplate around it but I find it serviceable for repeating notifications.

Deleting an attached photo (like those in the Emailed Photos folder) is considered a message edit. The post-er will be notified and the message will subsequently display an Edited tag in the message archive.

I was wondering if someone sends an email to the [email protected] address, do you receive it?
If you are an Owner or Moderator, whether you receive a message sent to [email protected] depends on your Subscription settings. Click on Subscription on the left-side menu bar and scroll down to the Owner Email section.

You can also get there by opening a Moderator record in the Member List.

What about the [email protected] address? owner meaning your group name.
If you mean [email protected], this is not what most people think it is. Sending any message to the +help address returns a list of available email commands, similar to the ones available in the old internet Listserv software. Try it and you'll see what I mean. See also?/static/help#emailcommands?

One more thing. How do you send a notice to all the members at once using the notices saved in the settings?
Member Notices of type Group Guidelines can be scheduled to be sent on a monthly basis. Unfortunately, there is no convenient way to do it at other times, or for other types of Member Notices. What I usually do is just open the notice, copy the text to my clipboard, paste it into a new group email, and send. If anyone has a better way I'd be pleased to hear how they do it.

Go to Admin>Settings>Member Notices and make sure that your desired Pending member notice is marked as Active. If not, no message will go out.

The Pending message is only sent in groups that use the Restricted method for Spam Control. If you've recently changed this group to use some other method, that would also explain the problem.

Re: New owner

There's a check box on the upload page that will send a message to the group.? Whether everyone gets it will depend on their settings.

Since the transfer process is on hold for now, your options are limited.? If you have all of the email addresses of your members, you could upgrade to Premium for a month and Direct Add them all.? I'd post a message on the Y group to let them know what's coming though.? Info on that is at /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Direct-Add-From-Yahoo

It looks to me like you've uncovered a serious bug.? As near as I can tell, there's now no way to get to your main group.? It may be possible to rename your main group temporarily to get them separated, but that might lead to worse problems.? Your best bet is probably to contact [email protected] to see if they can do what you want.? There would be no need to move members of the subgroup because everyone has to be a member of the main group in order to join a subgroup.
