Are you by chance using the Edge browser? If so, see this recent thread:??/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/23176361#10036

I does if it has users who are overseas.? The company I work for is exclusively in the US, but we've had to do major GDPR steps because of our international clientele.

Re: Blank Digests

Nina,

Several times I have received blank digests,
Can you describe what you mean by "blank"?

o The email is completely empty
o The Digest header and footer are there but no messages
o Messages are listed, but their content is missing
o Something else

And is your subscription to the Full Featured or Plain version of the digest?

That is why one needs to double-check direct adds. And promptly remove

A TLA added me to one of their internal lists, allegedly by accident.
One of their operators mis-typed their email address. (If you believe
that really is the case, will you buy some prime ocean front property

How embarrassing. I knew this used to work.

Somewhere in the last I don't know how many years, my fingers decided to do the multiple file selection in the wrong order. I just gave in and convinced myself it was some change in Windows. Now that I know this does still work if done correctly, I'll have to retrain my fingers again.

Since I'm not a lawyer, the only thing it can legally be, is the opinion

studying the law in question, including cases arising from it, and
reflects something approximating the current legal situation.

It seems odd to spend time and effort posting a detailed comment and then nearly saying "don't pay any attention to it".
There is this thing known as "practising law without license".
If one doesn't explicitly proclaim that one is not a lawyer, one can run
afoul of legislation related to the practice of law.

Under the laws of the legal jurisdiction in which I reside,
both "Using Estonian Law as an example..." and the description of the
Philippine Privacy Statute looks like a legal opinion, and hence can be
construed as practising law without a license. Thus the requirement for
the disclaimer.

If you read legal books, or browse legal websites, you'll see a similar,
albeit much longer disclaimer. First Year Law students are always
surprised to see the disclaimer in their textbooks, and even more
surprised upon encountering it in their State Reporter.

Re: Stray Accounts

Bruce,

One of my co-owners recently fat-fingered a Direct Add, entering the
wrong email address.
I did that some number of times entering addresses for my PTA group. Either fat-fingers (gmail.co and the like) or unable to read the member's scrawl on the membership form.

As you might expect, within a week this account was in Bouncing
status. I caught the error and unsubbed the account from the
group and did another Direct Add to bring that person into the fold.
In my experience they went to bouncing immediately: the Direct Add message itself would bounce. That told me I needed to go review that one. I wouldn't remove it until I determined the correct address (the still-bounced members served as a reminder).

What happens if someone later comes along and tries to subscribe to
some GIO groups with this same email address? It seems that person
will be surprised to find that they already have an account...even
more surprising is that they can't get any email delivery.
Beyond removing them from my group, I don't think I ever considered what future impact such accounts might have. There are several scenarios to consider, including email +subscribe, web Join, Invite, and another Direct Add. The latter two cases probably just work with no one the wiser.

I did have exactly one instance (so far) where the typo'd address was valid - which resulted in a confused stranger being added to the group. Fortunately she was polite about asking "Huh? Who are you" and I was able to resolve the issue with an embarrassed apology.

Stray Accounts

This is somewhat related to the "bouncing accounts" thread but I felt it warranted a separate topic.

One of my co-owners recently fat-fingered a Direct Add, entering the wrong email address. As you might expect, within a week this account was in Bouncing status. I caught the error and unsubbed the account from the group and did another Direct Add to bring that person into the fold.

So now we have an active account that's already in Bouncing status and is totally in limbo. And it seems to me that as GIO grows, such accounts are proliferating at some unknown rate.

What happens if someone later comes along and tries to subscribe to some GIO groups with this same email address? It seems that person will be surprised to find that they already have an account...even more surprising is that they can't get any email delivery.

This is just an example. I'm not convinced that this and related scenarios have been completely thought through. If someone can point me to a previous thread to that effect I'd appreciate it.

Bruce

Re: bounced emails

Jim Higgins

You MAY need to send a bounce probe to those members (and they'll need to respond to it) before that BIG BLUE B disappears.

If they tell you they're receiving messages again, but the BIG B remains, then for sure that's what you need to do.

Jim H

Received from Sandra Pickens-Gmail at 7/18/2018 09:33 PM UTC:

WooHooo! I'm seeing my triad.rr.com folks saying no longer bouncing via web!!!! This is great news. Now how long before they no longer have the BIG BLUE B by their email in members list?

Re: Your Groups.io Account Is Bouncing

Jim Higgins

Following up on an earlier posting where I reported receiving a notification saying my account was bouncing and that... "You must take action to restore your account, or we will unsubscribe you from all of the groups you are a member of."

That could be a disaster when the account bouncing belongs to the group OWNER.

Since I didn't see anything definitive elsewhere that said otherwise I asked Mark if this is how they really handle it, and if not could he please reword that notice. He responded quickly... "We don't unsubscribe you when you go on bouncing status. Email is just suspended."

That's good news to me!

Even better was the news that contact with RoadRunner/Spectrum had eliminated the cause of the bouncing, which was Spectrum, not Groups.io.

As if you don't already know, Groups.io has it together far better than Yahoo ever did. ;-)

Re: [email protected] not working for me

I initiated transfer of a Yahoo group recently (approx 1700 members and over 60K messages, 250 files and 900 photos). Following the steps in the Wiki on this site, the entire process was completed in less than 3 days (July 16th to July 19th). For what it's worth, my group here is a premium group; not sure that has any bearing though.

I'll contact Mark via the support address and ask him to change the wording of the bouncing notice to reflect that Group OWNERS are exempt from unsubscription... if that's indeed the case.
I really don't think that's the case, and anyone who hangs their hat on the premise that the system will somehow intervene to maintain their group ownership is playing with fire.?

I have personally been bumped from my own group for "marking as spam," but I clicked the resub link so that wasn't a long-term problem. We have three other owners, and I haven't been foolish enough to try it on purpose after downgrading their accounts.

There's supposed to be a feature to keeps the LAST owner from UNSUBSCRIBING from a group without first transferring ownership to someone else. But even that safeguard been inadvertently circumvented at least once when someone who was the sole owner merged his owner account with another one.

The bounce status of an account is really independent of what groups it may belong to; and in that context, the warning in the email makes sense. Account validity is predicated on the ability to deliver email there...after all, that's what was done to confirm them in the first place. Although I haven't heard of any GIO accounts actually being deleted, it seems appropriate that accounts remaining in Bounced status for years and years should eventually be subject to that kind of action.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Ftp, or some other bulk-upload capability, has been an oft-requested feature. Unfortunately, it has not been implemented.
