loading pdf files

I am trying to load pdf files to the files. I have tried a number of different ones from my computer and I get the message that the PDF can't be opened. right now all I have is a free group. don't know if this makes a difference.
thanks Pam Wolf

Pamela,
Do the files show up in the Files section after you upload them?? Does the error occur when you click on a file to open it in your browser?
This group has a PDF file in its Files section - can you view that?
What browser do you use?? Do you have a PDF file viewer installed and configured in your browser?? Can you view PDF files in your browser from other web sites?
Thanks
Toby

as soon as the file is loaded it says it can't be read.
it does show up and that is what comes up.
I can read the pdf that was uploaded to the files section here.?
I am using edge on windows 10. I have tried using files that were made into pdf from both a program that prints them and from Microsoft print to pdf.
I'm not sure what you mean about a pdf configured for the browser. I have adobe dc on my system.

?It would be interesting to know just what said the file can't be read. There are multiple possibilities (the site, your browser, a PDF plug-in for your browser, your operating system...)? It may be that a screen shot would be worth more than a thousand words here.

It is possible that somehow your files aren't being marked as PDF content when uploaded to Groups.io. In the Files list, what is the icon to the left of the file name? It should be a page with PDF inside. If it has a ? inside that's a big clue to the problem. Then it becomes a question of why Groups.io did not think the file was actually PDF.

Also, does the file name end with ".pdf"? If not you might try renaming the file before upload so that it does.
?

?That's interesting. And disproves most ideas about issues with your browser configuration. Do you mean that clicking on the file name in GMF's Files section causes your browser to open the file directly in your browsing tab or window? or does your browser prompt you to choose an app to open the file or save it?

For me, also on Windows 10, both Firefox and Edge open the pdf in the browser.

?Current browsers usually include PDF display in browser. But they can be configured to run a browser extension, or to request that you open the file with an app or save it instead.? The in-browser display of PDF files in Edge and current versions of Firefox do not use Reader DC or other application software to show you the PDF file.

I was using edge. I tried using chrome just to see if that would make a difference and was able to get a pdf file loaded. I don't know why edge was choking on loading a pdf file. it didn't seam to matter what was in the file. I tried just making one with a simple sentence like this is a test to see if this file will load as the only part of the pdf and still could not get it to load in edge. had no problems whatsoever when I loaded that file and? another one in chrome on the same computer.

Pam,

I was using edge.

Ah, interesting. Using Edge I see that error in the Upload File dialog too. It is where a thumbnail of the file should show:

Try ignoring that and click the Add button anyway. When I did the file apparently uploaded correctly into my test group. That is, I can now see the file in the group's Files list, and clicking on its name, even in Edge, opens the file in the browser window:

Edge is just plain not yet ready for prime time. Anyone having a problem while using Edge probably should try another browser before looking elsewhere for the cause of the problem.

I can agree with what you said about edge. I switched to using it when I first got windows 10 because chrome had not yet caught up with 10. now I think they have worked out some of their problems with 10 and many programs that didn't used to work now work just fine and even better under 10 than edge does. I also find that edge does not like to remember cookies on certain sites that I go to all the time.

as to trying to download the pdf anyway and having it work it was a blank page. even the single page document came up that way.

Odd.

For me Edge (on Win10 Pro, version 1803) reliably opens PDF files from my Group's File list in-browser - it does not prompt me to download them. I think to download the file I'd have to use the Save function from within the PDF page's toolbar. That includes the PDF file I uploaded with Edge by ignoring the thumbnail error.

For most other file types (JPG, TXT, etc.) it gives me a prompt "What do you want to do with [filename]?" with buttons for Open, Save or Cancel.

Some of this behavior is no doubt configurable, but I'm not proficient with Edge.

I tried a search for this issue but due to Mark¡¯s completely dysfunctional search mechanism that¡¯s impossible using more than one word.

Is there no way to attach (another) pdf (or for that matter any file) when editing a post?!?
Or substitute one file for the original?!?
On Win 7 pro/chrome (so no device screen size issue) there¡¯s no way that I see to attach a file.?
Or am I missing something?
A bug?
By design?

I¡¯ll ask the obvious- what¡¯s the point of providing editing if you can¡¯t EDIT?

Instructions for the message archive search engine can be found at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Using-the-Search-Engine.?It is possible that this question has not been asked before.

To the best of my knowledge, there is not.?

I believe that limiting some message edit capabilities is appropriate, given that the message has probably already gone out to the group as emails, and there is no way to retrieve them. But that's just one man's opinion.

You might consider posting this inquiry to beta as a feature request. Maybe someone there with more groups.io history -- perhaps even Mark -- will respond.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Bruce

The editing decision is to resend (if the edit is significant) or save w/o resending (if minor.). Limiting enough, otherwise the group can turn off editing all together. But there¡¯s no logical point to allow text editing only.

So posted to beta. thx.
