Re: Can I transfer a Yahoo Group I don't own or moderate?
Shal,
Couldn't he Log into the group online at Yahoo Use the Chrome App to copy the entire membership? list. Delete all of the Bounced members from the list Find all of the moderators and owners. Email all of them separately to see if he could get them to elevate him to do the transfer or work with him to do the transfer Lacking results from his email to moderators and owners he could start a group. Email all current members invitations to join at groups.io with a full explanation or Start a premium group. I can't find out who really is the owner and/or moderators and that is the problem, or at least a good start on solving the problem. I did that already.? I came up with 4 messages from owner to group asking for backup moderators in 2006 ad 3 are linked here: I sent a message to the volunteer asking if he got the position.? I was surprised that the email did not bounce after 12 years so there might be hope but it could also be an abandoned address like my charter.net address.? It took a bit of doing to get his address.? Yahoo truncates the domain.? Searching the volunteer's name and part of email got me a google groups message by him and google truncates part of the user address but gives the domain name (?) so I did send an email to him so we will see but suspect that it is a loosing battle. Re: Member/message transfer process
Tom,
As I understand it, when a member is transferred from Yahoo and theCorrect, 110. The copied messages are also attributed to the already-present member. Also, do I understand correctly that messages who's author is noNo. That is said to be the case for uploaded content (files, photos, etc.). Messages for no-longer-present addresses show the person's Display Name in the messages list, and that plus the email address when you open the message. But they end up attributed to no one; that is, they have no "All Posts By This Member" function. Which, come to think on it, is a little rude. It means that there's no systematic way to find them all until and unless Groups.io implements the ability to search messages based on the From address. Maybe they should have an "All Posts By This Non (or Former) Member" function. I searched for answers to both these questions, but could not findI haven't seen any. Most of what's known authoritatively is from posts by Mark in beta. My answers above are from observations made in one of my groups that transferred from Yahoo. Member/message transfer process
As I understand it, when a member is transferred from Yahoo and the member is already a member of the new group, their settings are not changed. ?But what happens to messages associated?with that member, which I assume is keyed on the email address?
Example: ?Joe@...?is a member of the new group before the transfer starts, and he is also a member of the Yahoo group with the same email address. ?Joe has 10 messages in the new group, and 100 in the Yahoo group, all tied to his email address. ?So after the transfer will Joe have 110 messages? Also, do I understand correctly?that messages who's?author is no longer in the Yahoo group will be assigned to whoever initiated the transfer? I searched for answers to both these questions, but could not find anything. ?If you can point me to any documentation on this it would be helpful. Peace, Tom |

Jim,[ snip ] Scroll down (or search) to find a field (line) that starts: X-eGroups-Approved-By: Jim (the "other" one) ;-) As Shal said, this could be VERY tedious. In my old YGroups maybe at most 1 in 500 messages. As a maybe shortcut... if you have a number of group messages saved on your home computer, you can use a local global search tool to search your email archive for that group for "X-eGroups-Approved-By:" and maybe find it a lot faster and easier. You might also do a search on the group for terms like "Moderator" or "Owner" in hopes that was part of the signature or other identification in a message from the Moderator. Good luck! 73 de Jim, KB3PU |
Re: loading pdf files
Pam,
as to trying to download the pdf anyway and having it work it was aOdd. For me Edge (on Win10 Pro, version 1803) reliably opens PDF files from my Group's File list in-browser - it does not prompt me to download them. I think to download the file I'd have to use the Save function from within the PDF page's toolbar. That includes the PDF file I uploaded with Edge by ignoring the thumbnail error. For most other file types (JPG, TXT, etc.) it gives me a prompt "What do you want to do with [filename]?" with buttons for Open, Save or Cancel. Some of this behavior is no doubt configurable, but I'm not proficient with Edge. Re: Can I transfer a Yahoo Group I don't own or moderate?
Jim,
My main question was just "how do I find out who the moderatorWow, I really misunderstood you. Examine a message posted in 2016 or earlier. If the group was fully moderated it doesn't matter which message, but you need a message that was approved by a moderator. The quickest way to get back to 2016 in the archive is via the table of messages at the bottom of the group's Info/about (aka "home") page. Open an arbitrary message and in the View menu select "View Source". The top of the message window will be occupied by the header fields of the message. This will look rather messy unless you're used to looking at them. Scroll down (or search) to find a field (line) that starts: X-eGroups-Approved-By: The rest of that field will contain the Yahoo ID and email address of the moderator that approved that message. If you can find no such field then this message did not require approval, and you'll need to try again. The bad news, apart from the search for an approved message, is that the email address will be "fig-leafed", with "@..." masking the domain part. You might simply guess, and try the "name@" you found against the top 10 or so likely email services. Or, you can look for any message posted by that moderator. The difficulty here is that in the Conversations it will show the person's Display name, which may not be either his yahoo ID or his email address. But if you do find an example of that moderator posting you can use View Source on that message, I believe a little more reading of the header fields may turn up clues that give away the email service that sent the message, allowing you to complete the address. I can at least copy files over but I do not have "permission" to doIt would be tedious, but you can use the techniques above to discover the email address of members who posted content of interest - if you can also find a message posted by that person. Re: Curious problem logging in
I had the same thing happen a little over a week ago.? The password I saved last time wouldn't work so I typed it in , no go.? I had them send me a link and it went to my old yahoo address not my gmail.? So once I got in, I merged the old account with the new and hope it lets me back in when mypassword runs out next month.

Re: loading pdf files
I can agree with what you said about edge. I switched to using it when I first got windows 10 because chrome had not yet caught up with 10. now I think they have worked out some of their problems with 10 and many programs that didn't used to work now work just fine and even better under 10 than edge does. I also find that edge does not like to remember cookies on certain sites that I go to all the time. as to trying to download the pdf anyway and having it work it was a blank page. even the single page document came up that way. I was using edge. I tried using chrome just to see if that would make a difference and was able to get a pdf file loaded. Edge is just plain not yet ready for prime time. Anyone having a problem while using Edge probably should try another browser before looking elsewhere for the cause of the problem. Jim H |
