The Bouncing indicators apply only to messages sent FROM the group, not to the group. What is this 6/30 message you are referring to? Is it a copy of something she sent that didn't make it through? If it's something else, it won't be useful for troubleshooting.

Lots of people have more than one email address and it's common for someone to attempt to post a group message using an address that is not subscribed. That would be the first place to look.

Hope this helps,

I actually disagree with both of those. I prefer that the site simply remember my most recent sort choices until I change them.

But those defaults would not be too annoying (to me) if they applied only at each new login. As long as my sort choice doesn't reset to the default simply because I navigated away from the messages list and back again.
Perhaps it would be possible to do both by having a checkbox to activate set default and drop down to select the ordering.? If the box is unchecked, the the drop down is ignored and the current behavior is preserved.

Re: User deleting own post

If the individual lives in Europe, you don't have that option.
If they want the data deleted, comply or be fined a fairly
significant amount - the greater of E10,000,000 or 10%
of gross worldwide revenue.
I support the notion? that a member ought to have the ability
to remove their own contributions, but until this interpretation
of the GDPR is proven in the context of group contributions
I believe statements like that to be rank fear-mongering.
Something that has not been mentioned is Copyright Law. Like you, Shal, I believe a person has the right to their own creations (writing, artistic, etc.) by copyright law. To prevent a member from deleting their own content may be an illegal 'taking' by removing control from the author/creator, and retaining it by the group owner. As such, it may be subject to legal action by the original author. If groups.io were to make the system such that a person could no longer control their own postings, that might also make groups.io subject to legal action, which is why I suspect Mark has not done that.

The internet is full of copyright abuses, taking images from different sources and sharing them, sharing written things like quotations and stories without even giving the original author credit, or sharing sound recordings. The GDPR appears to have been written to control that, and I would expect that the courts would continue to recognize copyright law.

Having said that, the question of a person replying to such a post and quoting part of the material originally posted would seem to fall into a gray area. Is such quotation allowed under the shared commons allowances as a reasonable use for educational discussions and common discourse?

I am not a lawyer, although I have been involved with copyright law for many decades. As group owners, we need to recognize the law and make reasonable efforts to protect those rights, or we may see enforcement like the GDPR enacted in the US as well.

Curious problem logging in

Today when I tried to log in to my group, it did not recognize my password. After several attempts I had to have a link sent to me to enter and created a new password. Is this something the groups.io does periodically for some security reason, or what......?

Answering Messages In Digest Mode With the Braille Note 4

Patty Fletcher

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hello.

A co-list member has written a message asking about how to answer messages in digest mode.

I¡¯m going to copy an edited version of her question here to see if anyone has the answer.

I¡¯m taking out names of mentioned list members whom she was trying to reply to.

If anyone has any info about this it would be much appreciated.

?

I was hoping to reply privately, but I'm subscribed in daily summary mode, and I'm having a devil of a time replying either on or off list. I may have inadvertently sent blank messages to ___ and the list. The problem is that for some reason, on my BrailleNote Touch running Android 4, I'm not finding the edit field in which to write my message. I'm sure it's a lot easier on my computer, but at times I would like to be able to do this on my BrailleNote Touch as well, so this is really frustrating. If any of you know of a way I can reply to such messages with my email program, you can email me at the address below.

?

?

So anyhow, that¡¯s the problem the list member is having and if anyone knows anything about this I¡¯d appreciate the help.

Thanks.

Re: Desirable member subscription preferences

Ken,

Be aware that GMF is a user-to-user group: no Groups.io employees here. The official "suggestion box" for Groups.io is the beta group:

That said, here's my feedback:

? Ability to set ¡®newest first¡¯ as a default for topic and message
list interfaces.

? Ability to set default sort method for photos and albums.
I actually disagree with both of those. I prefer that the site simply remember my most recent sort choices until I change them.

But those defaults would not be too annoying (to me) if they applied only at each new login. As long as my sort choice doesn't reset to the default simply because I navigated away from the messages list and back again.

? Ability to sort attached files and albums by /_member name_/
I'm all for lists (of all kinds) being sortable and filterable by any and all metadata. That is, "yes" in both the list of albums and in the list of photos within an album.

? Ability of the digest emails, when clicking the hotline of the
topic_ or _reply_, to take you there in the _*email*_, rather than
automatically opening up the _*website user interface*_.
The /Reply to Group/ and /Reply to Sender/ links beneath messages in a Formatted digest are mailto: links. If you're not seeing them that's, I think, a bug when the group's Reply To setting is not "Group".

Re: Group name already taken before transfer from Yahoo, Any recourse?

Kim,

I have a group on Yahoo with over 4800 members I¡¯d like to transfer to
Groups .io. However somebody has already take the name.
Technically that's not a problem - in the transfer there's no requirement that the group name in Groups.io match that of the Y!Group.

So you could take this as your opportunity to improve the group's name, were that something you would have considered were it not for the disruption.

I can¡¯t get a response from the owner. Is there any way I can get that
name so it can be retained for the transfer from Yahoo?
I doubt it, not without that owner's cooperation.

If group membership is open (or even if restricted) I'd probably join that group and then send to the +owner address again. That's because, unlike Yahoo, mods/owners in Groups.io have an option for what +owner messages to receive, and that owner may have chosen not to receive +owner messages from non-members.

Another thing you could try, as a member, is posting to the group itself. Particularly if the group is moderated, or new-member moderated, you may be able to get the owner's attention in their Pending Messages list.

The venue of last resort would be [email protected] but, absent some type of trademark situation or a similar violation of the TOS by that group's owner, I think the answer is likely to be "first come, first served".

Re: User deleting own post

jonathon,

Does Groups.IO honour x-no-archive headers?
Interesting question. It appears that the answer is "no", judging from a quick trial in my test group.

I know that Y!Groups did support it. In fact, even supported it as the first line of the message body. At least for text/plain, I never tried it in a text/HTML or MIME multipart.

Re: Storage space

Bob,

You could change the resolution max for all photos and reclaim space
that way. Most people would not notice the difference in resolution.
That's definitely something to consider going forward.

It would be really nice if there were a feature to apply those limits to existing photos "in situ" - without having to download and re-upload them and without disturbing their meta data (Name, Owner, Upload date, Description). That's something else that's been requested in beta:

We recently got a partial solution in the ability for a moderator to set the Owner field. But that still leaves the excessively tedious task of downloading, deleting, rescaling, uploading, and then correcting the Owner field of the resized photo.

Re: Storage space

Richard,

Members have suggested upgrading and offered funding. But it appears
that for us, if the funding stops, all the old stuff exceeding 1Gb
will be gone. That is what the members are afraid of.
For the moment that's not true. Currently when a group downgrades the existing content is not deleted; you simply lose the ability to add more if you're now over the limit.

However, I don't know if that can be relied on as a site policy in the long run. If the time comes that you're faced with having your group revert to Basic you should take advantage of the content download feature before the downgrade takes effect, just in case.

How about a 2-5 Gb for a one time payment program being available?
I'm all for that, even as a yearly payment. As Duane mentioned it was discussed in beta a while ago, but nothing has been said about it by Groups.io (Mark).

Re: Storage space

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

My group that was on Y since 2000, had used a whole lot of pictures as attachments to explain certain things. Members also had photo albums for storing their personal pictures in that related to what our group was about, with a few members accumulating up to 200 pictures in their albums. We also had files, databases, and archived posts too, and on Y our storage was almost unlimited. I knew when I decided to move the group to Groups.io I was going to need more than 1GB, but 10 was going to be overkill. I also knew I was going to lose all the attachments that were tied to archived posts, but I decided I could sacrifice the attachments for a move to a stable site. Groups.io offered everything I wanted so our group would continue into the future, and with 10GB of space we would never run out of room. The tradeoff besides the loss of the old attachments, is it was going to cost me $10.00 per month. Y spoiled me by giving all that to me for free, but I had to contend with a constant barrage of advertisements, and customer service that was pretty much non-existent¡Just the opposite in Groups.io. Some members offered to pay a little to offset the $10.00 per month, but to me it seemed kind of ridiculous to take $1.00 donations from a few members out of almost 100, and to complicated to setup just for $10.00 per month. I decided since this group was my baby, if I wanted it to continue on it was going to be up to me to pay for it. So where was I going to get the money to pay for my group every month? By giving up going out to coffee about five times a month, I could easily pay for the group, so that¡¯s what I¡¯ve been doing, and it hasn¡¯t changed anything in my life¡except I¡¯ve saved a little gas money in the process.

Subject: [GMF] Storage space

?

I recently discovered that my basic Group was using the entire 2Gb of storage
Mostly with photos. This is after 15 years with Yahoo. We are sort of a how to do it
Group, and phone pics have gotten bigger. The members do not want me to simply
delete all old stuff, because it has historical value
I have deleted some that were not of much use and gained 130 Mb of space.
The pics attached to messages are 26% of our total space now.

I can start an effort to induce posters to judge how much detail is needed in a pic.
Perhaps I can cut the Attachments space in half.

All this is a short term (4-5 years?) solution.
Members have suggested upgrading and offered funding.
But it appears that for us, if the funding stops, all the old stuff exceeding 1Gb
will be gone. That is what the members are afraid of.
We have no use for any of the other features, and most of our members are not
technically capable.

How about a 2-5 Gb for a one time payment program being available?
Even better maybe a one time payment for a forever 1 Gb more space as a basic -2 upgrade?
And repeatable every few years as the new space fill up.
This could be up to 10Gb at which point some new decision is in order.
Like buying bananas by the pound.
Use them up and then buy more.

I cannot see our group ever using 10 Gb (famous last words!) and we may never fill a second Gb.
Then too as the volume of information increases, the likelihood of anyone finding anything
useful to themselves decreases.? We have no Google to find anything in the Photos or Files sections,
and many members of our Group find it easier to place an inquiry to the group and have it answered by a member as
to the location of the information where it has been for 10 years. Few photos even have a caption.

My group has only 765 members, and within our obscure "hobby/avocation" the membership is dropping slowly.
There is no possibility of ever having more than 1000 members.
There must be a lot of Groups with the same limited future.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Richard

No, you're not answering your own question. But I definitely do liked that one. All you need to do, is under your subscription tab, just have all messages selected.
