¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I¡¯m just curious are you all receiving my messages?

I¡¯ve posed a couple questions to this list and other than someone sending me the help links which I¡¯d read already and felt I still needed more help with and one person writing me privately on an unrelated matter have received no answers what so ever.

Re: loading pdf files

Pamela,
Do the files show up in the Files section after you upload them?? Does the error occur when you click on a file to open it in your browser?
This group has a PDF file in its Files section - can you view that?
What browser do you use?? Do you have a PDF file viewer installed and configured in your browser?? Can you view PDF files in your browser from other web sites?
Thanks
Toby

When we realized that her message didn't show up on 6/30, she forwarded me the copy that was in her sent email folder.? ?Here it is:

Re: one member having problems posting

Nancy,

Her activity isn't showing up as bouncing, nor are her emails
being returned to her either by her server or by groups.io.
If her attempts aren't showing up in the group's Activity log as (failed) attempts then the most likely cause is using the wrong posting address.

But in that case she should be getting a failure return (unless she happened to use the address of another group, and is allowed to post in that group).

I can see the header of a message she sent on 6/30, and the email
address of the group is correct.
I have the same curiosity as Bruce about the message you examined. It would only be meaningful if she sent it as a CC to you (at a personal address) when posting to the group; and of course only if it was one of the failed instances.

Re: Curious problem logging in

I have to reset my password every single time too. it makes no difference if I type it in or cut and paste it in from the saved password list on my computer. it will still say the password is wrong. I think the site doesn't remember passwords.

loading pdf files

I am trying to load pdf files to the files. I have tried a number of different ones from my computer and I get the message that the PDF can't be opened. right now all I have is a free group. don't know if this makes a difference.
thanks Pam Wolf

I can't tell you how many times I've been unable to log in somewhere because I was unaware that I had caps lock on, or something simple like that.?

Re: User deleting own post

Dano,

Something that has not been mentioned is Copyright Law. Like you,
Shal, I believe a person has the right to their own creations
(writing, artistic, etc.) by copyright law. To prevent a member from
deleting their own content may be an illegal 'taking' by removing
control from the author/creator, and retaining it by the group owner.
No, I don't think Copyright applies in that way. And even if it did, by posting on Groups.io you've given a perpetual and irrevocable license to display your content.
/static/tos

When I say that I think a user ought to have the ability to delete their content, and terminate the license to display it, I mean that as a "moral right", not a legal one.

In this, I'm inspired by the former Yahoo TOS, which did provide that Yahoo's license to display your content ends when you or they remove it from the site. I haven't checked Oath's new terms to see if that provision survives.

Having said that, the question of a person replying to such a post and
quoting part of the material originally posted would seem to fall into
a gray area. Is such quotation allowed under the shared commons
allowances as a reasonable use for educational discussions and common
discourse?
That's probably something lawyers could argue over. But at least in the U.S. quoting only part of the post improves your case for treating the quote as "fair use".

Remember too that (under U.S. law) copyright enforcement is primarily about the commercial value of the work. If the work has no commercial value then there are no damages to be recovered in an infringement suit (statutory damages are only available if you've promptly registered the work on publication).

I don¡¯t think email falls under ¡°creation¡± but under letters. And letters do belong to the person to whom they are written aren¡¯t they?

I haven¡¯t checked the current version but the law used to say "500 words or less" for educational, etc, purposes, and without the intention of replacing the original.

I have one group in which users are not allowed to edit or delete their messages because contentious discussions often involve what a person said or didn¡¯t say. Erasing the record makes things even more difficult.

On another list where the archives are often searched for documents and dates, users can edit or delete the posts because we don¡¯t want false information going into history.

The other reasons for at least the moderator being able to edit or delete is for things that were posted accidentally or in ignorance ¡ª phone numbers, addresses, personal vacation dates, etc. And possibly slanderous statements, particularly political candidates whose supporters get irate.

Chat Room Problem: Chat text entered in the entry box sometimes does not appear in the Chat Dialog #chats

Bill N4iQ

?Chat text entered in the entry box sometimes does not appear in the Chat Dialog.? I have ten separate chat rooms set up in K2L Groups.? Some are in use more than others.

At various times and in various chat rooms, entering text and then clicking on "send" does not actually send the text.?? The text in the entry box just disappears and nothing happens.? It never shows up.? This seems to be temporary - later everything is working fine.?

This is very annoying and defeats the purpose for which they were set up.? Any suggestions or recommendations?? Could this be a bug, slow server or what.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.????? Bill

Re: Notification of Files Uploaded

Thank you. I knew it was there somewhere but since I was looking for it and not uploading a file, I couldn¡¯t find it.

Do others think it might be helpful to have a universal option to notify the list whenever a file is uploaded. A question by the option about who can upload files so it notifies the owners, moderators, or subscribers.

A member of one of my groups uploaded a file this morning and notified the list but often people forget. I would like to be notified whenever something is posted so I can monitor it.

There is no setting to default this checkbox nor a group setting to 'always notify' - which you probably wouldn't want to do, for example, when uploading a bunch of files, the group would get notified on each one.

Re: User deleting own post

jonathon,

It falls under _The Right to be Forgotten_ statutes, not GDPR.
Either way, the point is that the right to be forgotten is not absolute. As others have replied, it does not necessarily mean that one can expect to be erased from the history of a group's messages.

Yes, and that is what I thought too, but after many attempts, and typing very slowly making certain everything was right, I realized that it was not me, but the site. I even wondered if I had somehow been hacked. And since no-one else seems to have had this experience here, I am beginning again to wonder if that is not the case.

Notification of Files Uploaded

Is there a way for the list to be notified when files are uploaded?

We allow everyone to upload files but I just realized no one has been notified when files were uploaded.

Re: Curious problem logging in

Never had it happen with Groups.io, but have had it with other sites that require a periodic log-in. After several attempts to assure my self it was the site and not me, I gave up and created a new password. And every single time, upon further research, I had mis-typed the password. Either a mispelling, a missed capitalization or a missed special character. Or forgotten I had already changed the password. Not saying definitely that's what happened to you, but it's definitely a strong possibilty.?

The Bouncing indicators apply only to messages sent FROM the group, not to the group. What is this 6/30 message you are referring to? Is it a copy of something she sent that didn't make it through? If it's something else, it won't be useful for troubleshooting.

Lots of people have more than one email address and it's common for someone to attempt to post a group message using an address that is not subscribed. That would be the first place to look.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
