Description:

This is your monthly subscription reminder for the Group Managers Forum. We are glad you joined our group.

  • Our GMF Group's web resources are open and public. Our Messages archives and Wiki are viewable and searchable by non-members. GMF message archives are indexed by major search engines. Unfortunately, due to Groups.io restrictions, you must be a member of GMF and logged in to access our Files and Photos sections.

  • We expect members to post and act responsibly. Please respect your fellow members' time and attention: strive to be clear, concise and courteous. Our subject matter naturally includes matters of opinion; if you happen to disagree with another member please do so without being rude. Personal attacks are not allowed. Solicitations are off topic and will be deleted without comment. Listing your groups in your signature is perfectly acceptable, but just make sure there's also on-topic content in your post.

  • Attachments are allowed and the judicious use of screen shots and other illustrations is encouraged!

  • All messages sent to GMF are moderated. This is done to avoid malicious attachments, spam, off-topic messages, and messages from spoofed or compromised mail accounts. Despite these measures, be aware that the bad guys are clever so there's no guarantee that we'll always succeed; you are encouraged to be vigilant against any and all threats arriving via email. Your GMF moderators make no guarantees regarding the safety of emails arriving from this or any other Groups.io address.

  • We are always looking for suggestions from our members to make this group better for all. Feel free to address any questions, comments, or concerns directly to the group moderators via email to [email protected].

GMF Mission Statement:

We strive to be a resource of the highest quality for owners and moderators of Groups.io groups. We allow as much information as possible from our group to be accessed by visitors! Would you like to be a better Groups.io group owner and/or moderator? Would you like to see even more improvements in Groups.io groups? We discuss our experiences as both group owners and moderators, share ideas for promoting and customizing the content areas, and offer various techniques for managing groups.

To send a message to the members of this group, simply send email to [email protected].

GMF is at times very busy. To substantially cut down on the email clutter see Subscription Options. In particular, Following Only, First Message Also, and Auto Follow Replies work well together to focus only on topics of interest to you.

If you do not wish to belong to GroupManagersForum you may unsubscribe by using the link in the footer of this (or any) message, or by sending an email to [email protected].

Re: Want No Mail Setting to Take Affect

Vince,

I have visited this group and marked my subscription for "No Mail",
but the emails keep coming in.
If you're still having this problem, check the bottom of the footer of one of the messages. That will show the subscribed email address next to the Unsubscribe link. You may have more than one subscription to the group in question, and haven't turned off the active one.

Re: Owner locked out of moderation

Keith,

Today I got a message that a post needed to be approved. When I went
to approve, all the choices were blocked (the little red circle with
the slash through it appeared in each block.
Hopefully you've resolved this by now.

In the Pending list you must put a checkmark by one or more pending messages before you can take any action on them. Trips me up all the time, it is why I almost always open the messages rather than approved directly from the list.

Re: Subscribers trying to get digest, but still getting all individual messages.

Jim,

But some...like perhaps 15-20 (I'm not counting) have contacted me and
said they sent email notices to get a digest, but that they're still
getting every single message.
For the command to take effect they must receive and respond to a confirmation email from Groups.io. That was also true of Yahoo Groups, but still it trips people up.

Re: Save a picture from PHOTOS

Just wanted to add my comments to this subject.? In Yahoogroup, I could only download the photo to my computer and then either attach it or embed it into any email I wanted to send out to share the photo.

Here in groups.io when I click on the download and then right click on the photo, I get more choices than we had in yahoogroups.? I can copy it directly from groups.io and embed it right into my email using the copy and paste or I can do the save image as and actually give it any name I wish.? Yahoogroups didn't allow me to change the name when I went to download it.? I had to go to my Photos and then change the name of the photo there since many members uploaded their cards with their camera's name (like DSC00242) instead of actually saying what the photo was.
?
Sincerely,

Re: Save a picture from PHOTOS

If the DOWNLOAD button is not going to download anything, then it should offer the user a dialog box to follow rather than assuming they can figure out what to do next.? Most of my members are in their 80's and don't share all the current "high-tech" lingo or intuitivity but still might want to save a pic.
Just saying...

As I mentioned I figured out that those 'missing' formatting function buttons don't display because we have our group set to text only. And I see that this extends to the Wiki Page formatting, too.

Your own preferences for your own account don't affect the group settings.

Just change (at least for testing purposes ) in your Account (your name, top right corner). Website Preferences.
This is just a change for your account. You can try to see if you can do what you want and then change it back!?
Will only affect you.

I just tried. Made some text red, chose fonts, etc.
Then changed it back in my own preferences to plain text. It stuck. I can still see the nice formatting!

BTW, I am using a MacBook Pro too, 13 inch - OS 10.15.2
Safari - Version 13.0.4?

Re: #featurerequest Request for Cover Image caption #featurerequest

Paul M.,

Apparently my group's message formatting choice of 'text only' DOES
affect the Wiki Editor.
Not reproduced in my test group.

Changing your Editor Preference on the Preferences page of your Account /will/ affect the creation of new Wiki pages (sets the format of that page).

Clicking on the hamburger menu to show advanced formattng in the Wiki
Editor for a Home page I created shows a second line of formatting but
that line is missing the dropdowns for font, points (size), and for
text color, and highlighting (background color).
I think this may relate to screen width, as Bruce suggested.

Now that I know this I can live with it.

And once again, thanx for all the good advice, Bruce. I learned a lot.

Cheers!

It was probably done by forcing the mime type, which frankly isn't that reliable, either.

The behavior on sending a binary data stream depends on file type, in association with client-side configuration/add-ons. For example, if I click on a PDF file from the Files area, it also opens in my browser; and we recently had a thread here about the CSV file being displayed instead of opening a download dialog box when you export your member list.

However, this should probably be revisited. HTML5 introduced the "download" attribute for the <A> tag in 2015, and I suspect most browsers are now supporting it.?

Yes, that's the way it works here.? At one time, it was changed to attempt to actually download a photo, but it broke most (all?) of the browsers that use the Firefox base, so was reverted to this version.

Without turning this into a "me too" movement of a different sort, I'd like to add my voice to Sandy's. As a "tech dunce," the transition of our group of friends to Groups.io was almost seamless?and surprisingly effortless. Many thanks to the folks at GIO who jumped in and rescued us where the Yahooians threw us overboard.
?
Happy 2020 to all; may the year bring us some 20/20 clarity about our respective nations and the world in general.

On my Mac, I can download the photo (save image to downloads or somewhere else. / some other folder) Or add image to Photos. Or copy the address or the image. Or share.

But usually I want to put the photo in my Photos application.

It depends on what you mean by Private.? If you mean "private messages", no one but members can read the messages, but can find it in the site Directory, /search.? If you mean "Group not listed in directory", then no one can find it in the site Directory, so you'd have to use one of the methods Bruce mentioned.

June -- It's really pretty much the same for any group; the only thing the Private setting does is keep your group from showing up in the groups.io directory/search engine of available groups.

Four options:
  1. Go to?/g/GROUPNAME?and click the "Join This Group" button
  2. Send an email of any kind to [email protected]
  3. Respond to an invitation sent by you (/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Inviting-new-members)
  4. If your group is on the Premium payment plan, you can Direct Add people (/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Direct-Add-Members)

How does someone find and join a group which is currently listed as Private?? I have just set up a test group and need a few people to join for testing.? Do I need to send invites to all those I want to join for now?
