sub-groups

I think I already know the answer to this, but I wanted to ask to be sure. Can a subgroup have a subgroup?

Our group has a subgroup that wants to now further split into another subgroup...but only within the subgroup, not the main group.
Thanks,
Jean

Chris,

... but I might argue that it is aimed at Owner & Moderators rather than Subscribers, who might find the whole thing a bit daunting. The GMF wiki has a lot of content around what Owners and Moderators can do, much of which is not available to "ordinary" members.
?
The first two sections, Quick-Start Guide and Advice to Group Members, are supposed to be aimed squarely at the non-moderator members of our groups.
?
That said, I'm open to suggestions akin to Frances' idea for more clearly delineating the target audience of the sections. Would horizontal rules across the page be enough of a visual clue? Maybe we should try that or something similar.
?
I'm even open to the possibility that those two sections should be broken out into a separate wiki "home" page for members. Well, not literally a second wiki "home" page, since that's not an available feature. So I'm unsure what the best path forward would be.
?
My main concern is that moving those sections to their own page might effectively hide them, no matter how prominently we make the link "Here's info for group members" on the home page. Maybe that's not too big a concern, as group moderators who want to provide that info to their members would pass along a link to that separate page rather than the GMF wiki home page.
?
The other obvious option would be to keep the member info on GMF's home page, and move the Best Practices for Group Management section off to a secondary page. I'm not fond of that idea because I suspect that most GMF members actually need the Best Practices pages more often.
?
A third approach is the same as the first, but leaving the GMF home page as is. The downside is that the duplication of effort involved in adding links to any new member-specific pages to both "home" pages.

Re: Introduction guide for subscribers

Hi

Could we create a new home page pointing to one page for members and one page for owners and moderators? Just divide the two parts.

Or does Groups.io allow 2 wikis for one group?

The 2-pager that mohnkern mentions could be part of the members¡¯ section.

Barbara Jean,

... but just what is wiki??

As Bruce cited, it is a collaborative web site. The name wiki has a somewhat .

Specific to Groups.io, it is an optional web feature of a group (like files and photos) where group members can contribute content. In this case, content in the form of a collection of mutually editable web pages. When visiting GMF's web pages you'll find the link to our Wiki at the bottom of the navigation list in the left column.

Introduction guide for subscribers

I've been trying to find an online guide for groups.io for subscribers, where it doesn't talk about groups, subgroups, permissions, etc, but talks about if you are a subscriber, all the features and how they work (messages, polls, chats, calendar, etc.)

Is there a guide like this anywhere?? If not shouldn't there be one?

Re: Randomly can't email a list I'm the Admin for from Gmail #notworking #bouncedemails

Karen,

I did the analysis and have pasted it below if it's useful.
Not too much, but it confirms that Groups.io rejected the attempt by your email service to deliver the message.

From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <mailer-daemon@...>
To: kottoni@...
Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2019 20:49:00 -0700 (PDT)
This is typical of cases where the sending service is unable to deliver the message.

The response from the remote server was:
500 Delivery failed.
That response was from Groups.io's inbound server. That's distinct from the kind of failures where your service couldn't find Groups.io (in the DNS directory) or couldn't connect to Groups.io.

Most of Groups.io's error responses are far more informative, This one is sort of a catch-all for unusual cases. Do report this to [email protected], including at least the section of the "show original" starting with the From: line I quoted down through the 500 error.

Re: How to transfer Yahoo Group to io when original owner of Yahoo group has died #transfer

Michael,

As moderator, I cannot invite the new member to the Yahoo group that
groups.io requires to initiate the transfer.
More important than the "Invite and add members" privilege, is "Add, remove, and change moderator privileges", but I'll hazard a guess that if you don't have the former, you probably don't have the latter either.

One way to find out is to go to the Manage Members page, switch to the Moderators tab, and click on your own row, anywhere to the right of the green crown. If you get an Edit Member pop-up dialog you're golden: give yourself all the Moderator Privileges and Save the dialog. If nothing happens, you're out of luck.

Failing that...

How can I transfer members of a Yahoo group where I am a moderator?
You can export the Manage Members list, then use a program like Excel to extract the email addresses and format them in a way suitable for use with Groups.io's Direct Add or Invite page.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Direct-Add-From-Yahoo

You can upgrade your group to Premium for one month in order to use the Direct Add feature. You may find that more convenient than Invite, especially if there are a large number of members in your Y!Group.

Speaking of which, if your group has more than 1000 members the Y!Group export won't do. You can try the chrome app from YahooGroupedia:

There's also an app to export your group's Messages.

Another option is PG Offline:

These options won't allow you to get your Y!group's content (messages, files, photos, etc.) into your Groups.io group, but they can help with the members. And at least you can have an offline copy of some of the content as a backup.
