Re: How do I UNmoderate members #moderation

Barbara Jean,

Kathryn: go to settings and then go to spam control.? I think by default the settings is for new users to be moderated.? Just uncheck that box and that should make it where no user is moderated.

That will not affect any current members, they have already been set to NuM (New User Moderated) in the Posting Privileges of their membership page.

Also, the Spam Control section of your group's settings requires that at least one of those boxes be checked. For a classmates group like Kathryn's Restricted Membership may be appropriate, but otherwise NuM may be the best option for the group.

One thing I don't know how to do (and hope I don't ever have to do) is to put an individual on moderated status.
?
You can do it by opening the member's page from the Members list, and scrolling to the bottom. In the Posting Privileges section chose Override: moderated then Save the change.

You can do it also directly on the Members list, using the checkboxes and Actions menu, which is handy if you need to do more than one at a time.

Re: Secondary Email

Barbara Jean,

There is nothing wrong with having more than one e-mail address.?

I certainly did not mean to imply that there is. I have several myself.

I was focused on Marcio's original question about what to do if he one day woke up to find that the email address which he uses for his Groups.io account had been disabled.

There is also nothing wrong with having multiple Groups.io accounts, as I do. Primarily for the reason Lena and Donald hinted at - it can provide a backup in case you lose access to your primary one. But that backup is limited: since those are separate accounts they do not own the same content.

It has been mentioned many times in GMF that it is good practice for a group to have more than one owner, just in case. I endorse that idea, and usually create a second owner under a second email address of my own shortly after creating a new group. Even better is to have additional owners who are not oneself, if you can identify trustwothy individuals for that role.

Both of my io groups are new and the members are coming form a couple of yahoo groups I have and am going to close down due to problems with yahoo groups and photos (an important feature in one of the groups)? One thing I don't know how to do (and hope I don't ever have to do) is to put an individual on moderated status.

Re: Secondary Email

There is nothing wrong with having more than one e-mail address.? Let's face it many people have both a personal and work e-mail address.? Since I am transgender I had for many years both an e-mail address for my male name and my current name.? When I had the problem of someone hacking my yahoo e-mail address I opened a gmail account and to this day both are active but I just don't do anything on the yahoo address except to clear out things to keep the box from being cluttered.
Having the two addresses is handy also in the event that I want to send something to myself from one computer to another computer that I have at another location.

Well, maybe do panic about all of the other consequences of losing your email address. But at least your Groups.io account won't be another casualty. Unless maybe you have your browser or security software set up to discard cookies at the drop of a hat.

Edited

Kathryn,

?
So far, when someone posts for the first time, I get an email and I can look at the message, then choose to approve and unmoderate. But I can't find anyplace to put all members (at once) on unmoderated status.
?
First, go to the group's Settings page and ensure that the Moderated checkbox, in the Spam Control section, is not checked.
?
Then, go to the Members page and put a checkmark on every member with a light blue M or NuM badge after their email address. At the bottom of the page, select Change Moderation in the Actions menu. In the pop-up Set Moderation Status dialog box select Use Group Moderation Setting then click the Change button.
?
That will let you set up to a page full of members at a time. You can go to your Account page to change the number of members shown per page up to 100, but I don't recommend "infinite scroll" as that seems to sometimes lead to trouble.

You can go to groups.io and when you try to sign in with your email account, it will ask for a password. Choose the selection that indicates you don't have a password. It will send an email to your current email address inviting you to set up a password. Follow that link. Then if yahoo quits on you, you can go in through the groups.io home page, sign in with the yahoo email address and your password. Then you can get into your account and change the email address. It will send a confirmation to your new email.

Re: Notes for moderators

When I expand my admin setting, then click on the little triangle on the blue members button, I can choose either "past" or "banned" members. That list will pop up. If I click on their email address, their account will pop up. I just checked and I can still access the notes as well as the activity history.

Confused. Here's what it reads:
On the edit profile page, you can change your email address. Once you do so, you will receive a new confirmation email. Once you reply to that, you will be all set.
Now the question is: How in the earth will I be able to reply through an email if said email isn't working? :(
Marcio -- Let me try to explain this step by step.

1) First, you need to somehow get logged in under the old email address. If you visit the site frequently enough, your existing login should remain active. Alternatively, you could still achieve a login by entering your old email address and a previously-established password.?

If you are not already logged in and you haven't established a password, then you will indeed be stuck. That's why I recommend that everyone set up a password, even if they usually use the "email me a link" approach to log in. Go do it. Now.

2) Assuming that you have somehow achieved a login, go to the Account page that I previously mentioned (/account).?

3) At the top of that page you will find a box labelled "Email." Type your new email address into this box, overwriting the one currently there.

4) Click the "Change Email" button. I believe a dialog box will pop up, confirming that you want to do this.

5) A confirmation email will be sent to your NEW email address. I can only assume that you somehow have access to this address, otherwise you wouldn't have typed it into the box in step 3.?

6) Respond to that email and the change will be completed.

I would include screenshots, but that would require me to make a change to my own account, and I don't want to do that. So I hope this is adequate.

Bruce

I can't verify it since I don't have a paid group, but I believe it becomes a drop down on the members page (where you can choose members, bouncing, etc.)? The most recent information says their Notes should remain.

My question is still the same :)
What exactly you've set up for your account? As I said, I've only set up an email, it never asked mefor anything else apart from an email and a password.
That's why I also asked if, even if Yahoo stops working, it will be enough to just type in my email and password and it will? be treated as a group.io account, which would have nothing to do with my email itself.

Re: Notes for moderators

Hmm, mine is a paid group and wouldn't have a clue where to look for member information after they are gone... their membership entry disappears when they leave or are booted.

As for the database with limited access, excellent idea, not sure why that obvious solution didn't occur to me.

Thanks.

If it were me, I'd probably set up a database that only owners and mods could access.? I believe that on paid groups, you still have access to the member information after they're gone.

Notes for moderators

So when I place someone on moderated status, I pull up their member record, and in the "notes" field, I place a note when the person went on moderated status, and why. That way other moderators can see the shared record.

But when we boot someone out of the group, obviously the entire member record is deleted, including anything in the notes field.? So we have been maintaining a separate spreadsheet recording members who we have booted, the date, and why, etc.? Would be nice if that information could be recorded in groups.io somewhere...

Is there any place in groups.io that moderators can maintain a record of action on members that will not be impacted once a member is booted or leaves the group?? Figured I'd ask before I go over to the beta group and add that as a suggestion.? Thanks.

I'm not sure how to do this but if you joined by email only, you
really should set things up with a password so you can log into the
site and your groups in case your email stops working. From there you
should be able to change anything, and you also will have access to
group files, pictures, etc.

I set up an account here first before creating or joining any groups,
so I am not familiar with an email-only experience (though I generally
only use email to receive and send posts/replies).

Subscribe another address and make it an owner or moderator.
Sounds good to me. Thanks for the tip :)
As a last resort, if indeed I need to confirm through my old email before changing it, I'll consider creating another email and making it an owner. Bruce said that it won't ask me to confirm anything through my old email but then there's the note on the Help webpage.

Either way, thanks, I'm saving it as well as other messages sent on this thread so far :)
