Messages from Mods coming from group owner address

Hi,

I've noticed that if a member who is set as a Moderator sends a message direct to another member, the message composition screen defaults to say the message is being sent by the owner of the group. If the Moderator is not set to receive owner emails (as in my group's case) then they will not be able to receive a reply.

I can't think of any reason why a Moderator (without receive owner emails permission) should be able to send emails as the owner and unless anyone can enlighten me, I'll raise it with support.

Regards
Andy

I just checked on one of my groups and Infinite Scroll works on the hashtag page, but there's a definite delay when I get to the bottom of the 20 shown before the next batch comes up each time.

In a database, it's fixed at 20 items per page in Infinite Scroll mode, but the navigation controls are present.

Re: Not all Hashtags shown in web interface

Sort of fixed it thanks to a message from Bruce Bowman to change the "Items Per Page" in my account preferences. Setting this to 100 I now see all 32 hashtags and at the bottom right corner there's the "Next Page", "Previous Page" navigation (although they're not needed as everything fits on one page).

Thing is my original setting was for "Infinite Scroll" and if I go back to that I again can only see 20 hashtags with no page navigation and no scrolling to see any more?

Not for certain, but the most likely thing is that you have overlooked the bottom of the (first) hashtag page, where you should see something like this:

The above is from the hashtag list of this group (GMF) and shows hashtags 1 to 20 of 98, on "page 1" of the list; the 1 is in bold, identifying the "active" page.? To see other hashtags in alphabetical order click on 2, 3, 4, etc.

I'd guess that you've selected 20 items per page under your account.? If you scroll to the bottom of the hashtag display, there should be a control on the right side to get to the others.

Not all Hashtags shown in web interface

From the home page I select the "Hashtags" link from the panel on the left of the screen. I only see twenty hashtags when I know there are more than this. If I try to create a hashtag I know exists but which is not displayed on the page I get an error message informing me the tag already exists. The various drop down menus for creating or listing topics do contain all the hashtags.

Anybody got any ideas as to what's happening?

Re: Earthlink Blocking Email

Jeremy,

He¡¯s followed their instructions, but somehow he¡¯s not able to unblock
his groups.io incoming mail. Any suggestions?
I'm suspect it would take sustained pressure from a bunch of Earthlink customers to get them to fix their blocking problem. In my opinion if an email service won't deliver legit messages you wish to receive, then it isn't much of a service.

What Earthlink needs to act on: the domain groups.io is a legit email list service, and 66.175.222.12 is the IP address of its outbound mail server.

Joe -- There is currently no way to create an "alternate" email integration address within groups.io that meets your requirements. The integration address has to be long and complicated to not only be unique to your group/integration but also to provide some assurance that it won't be guessed/hacked.?

If you have access to email forwarding of some kind, you could have SPOT send it to a shorter address that's within your control, which is subsequently forwarded to the groups.io integration address. I know that GMail has this capability () and a lot of other services do, too.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

It drives me crazy, too. Fortunately, that's a short drive.

When a message contains a photo it is copied to the "Photos" section.
Then every reply to the message copies it to the "Photos" again.
I have asked before and been told to "strip" the image from replies .
How?? I need to explain the method in detail to members.
Please see my response of July 18 (/g/GroupManagersForum/message/17808).

There is no single "way to do this." Email clients vary widely in their behavior. We might be able to provide instructions for stripping attachments in replies for (say) Thunderbird, but that won't help any subscriber using Outlook Express or W10 Mail or Eudora or Apple Mail or...

If everyone was using the same app, this kind of thing would be under groups.io's control; or at least we could provide one satisfactory answer. That's the main reason why an app is under development; but there has been no timeline posted as to when it might become available.

In the meantime (per Andy), your best bet may be to put all messages with attachments on moderation. See Admin>Settings>Message Formatting>Attachments. Depending on attachment traffic in your group, that could be a chore...but you might prefer that to wearing a straightjacket.? :-)

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Is there a way to shorten an email address created using integration?

I've created an integrated address so that my FindMeSpot account can send notifications to my group.? Turns out that SPOT has problems with the long address that was created in the integration process. The address works if I send a test message to it myself, but SPOT has problems handling it.

Is there a way of creating an address that is shorter?

Thanks,
Joe

I got a bit behind on my emails so have only just seen this:

We have the same issue as a large number of our members respond by email and don;t consider trimming their posts.? We have set our groups to moderate all messages with attachments we get the opportunity to remove images that would cause duplicates.? We always add a moderator note like those you see here on GMF when that is done. The majority of images trapped for moderation to begin with were those in email signatures and people learned quite quickly that if they wanted their message to be posted without delay they should remove the graphics.

Re: What is a subgroup

Sandy,

... I'm thinking of starting subgroups for our guild's officers & committees ...

That seems like a natural fit. Similar to how I use Groups.io for my PTA lists. The primary group is all unit members, and then subgroups for the board, teachers, committees, etc.

My continuing issue is member trepidation in using

Tell them to "come on in, the water's warm".? ;-)

Their concerns, of course, will depend on the member's background and the nature of your group. Feel free to relate some of the concerns here if you'd like suggestions about addressing them.

Also, GMF's wiki is readable by the public - feel free to pass on links to any pages that might seem helpful. Each page has a link icon near the upper right which you can copy/paste as a reference to that page.

We have the same problem with everyone with an earthlink account. They receive some but not dependably. They have set up other email addresses just for Groups.io.

Re: Moderator Changing Subscriber's Display Name

Chris,

Odd; any trial changes I have made (on two lists!) do show the D/N of the target subscriber.

True, but that's not what I'm concerned about.

My group might have a dozen members with a Display Name of "Chris", but which one did a co-moderator just change to "Chris Jones"? Absent the member's email address I can't necessarily uniquely identify them.

Odd; any trial changes I have made (on two lists!) do show the D/N of the target subscriber. The moderator's name is a link to his/her subscription page; the target isn't - it's "plain".

Have a look on your test group for a trial change I did there.

Re: Moderator Changing Subscriber's Display Name

Chris,

IMHO there is still a glitch in the system in that a Moderator changing a Member's Display Name is still being recorded as a Member Activity rather than a Moderator Activity.

Interesting point.
Actually I'd argue it should be in both, as an action by a moderator that affects a member. The same as a change of role is listed in both. My reasoning is that if a tug-of-war happened between a member and a mod changing the member's Display Name I'd hate to have to figure that out by cross-referencing both lists. I suppose the counter-argument is that I could use the All list in that case.

But speaking of which, I just noticed a much worse problem. The entry identifies the moderator who did it, but not the member whose Display Name was changed. Oops! I've added that to my support thread.
