Re: Special notices

The message went but not as "special notice", I guess. I see My husband has digest and he didn't get it.?In Activity, the message only appears in Message Activity without any note about special notice, but not in Moderator Activity or Member Activity.?It could have got unticked by error.

Abut a couple of questions before I resend it -

If someone gets a digest, would they get a Special Notice message right away? I would assume so. It should override their delivery options and deliver the message immediately (or immediately as possible!)

I just recently changed my settings so that there was no "no mail" option. The two who had been "special notices only" got changed in the members list to "special notices only". Perhaps that isn't working.

Has anyone sent a Special Notice recently and noticed its behaviour? J_Catlady?

Thanks!

Frances

Re: Special notices

It will be in your own "activity history" under your member page. It says "sent special message."

Special notices

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know how I can tell if a post actually went "special notice"? I did tick the box on the web posting interface. But it doesn't say anything about it when I look at activity.

Thanks.

Terry,

Yes indeed that's what I want to happen, and I hoped it would with the membership notice added as described by Steph. But I tried it out, added a message, then signed out, found my group and joined simply by adding another email address. Sure enough my membership notice email came through, but so did another joining email with a confirmation link. Clicking that link joined my other 'me' as a pending member, but by the looks of it unable to post or see messages until approved. So it seems to do the job.

Re: Moving a subscriber list into Groups.io

Reed,

When I load my subscriber list, will it result in an invitation for each
subscriber to accept the membership to Google.io or some other welcome
message?
In your group's Settings page there's a tab for Member Notices. There is a sub-tab for your group's "Welcome" message. There is default text for this message but it is in an editable box so that you can customize the message.

o If you use the "Invite" function each person will be emailed an invitation to join the group. There is a fill-in box on the Invite page where you may customize the invitation email. The person's email address will be added to a "Sent Invitations" list. When he/she accepts the invitation he/she will become a member of your group and will receive the Welcome message.

If your group has restricted membership, the invitation constitutes pre-approval so the person will not need to go through a second step to be approved as a member.

o If you use the "Direct Add" function (only on Premium groups) each person's email address will be immediately added to your group's Members list. There is a fill-in box on the Direct Add page where you may customize a notice emailed to each person. The Welcome notice will also be sent to each person.

o If Groups.io imports your list for you that works the same as Direct Add, except that no default notice is sent. The Welcome notice is sent only if you have customized it.

Hi Robert, in the group settings for your group under membership notices there is a place where you can paste those questions and then when a person requests membership of your group that application gets sent their way, then they would fill out that form and send it back.? I hope that this helps you.? Steph

Hi Shal,

I understand these methods of importing subscribers. When I load my
subscriber list, will it result in an invitation for each subscriber to
accept the membership to Google.io or some other welcome message?

Reed,

Is it possible to import my subscriber list from MailChimp without
having to invite everyone to sign up again?
Assuming you already have a way to export the email list from MailChimp, or
that you have a copy in a file already...

With Groups.io there are two methods I know of.

1) Pay for the "Direct Add" feature. That's a premium feature not available
to Basic (free) groups. Premium groups cost $10/month, but you can pay that
for a single month, during which you add (import) your list. This is ideal
for your situation - starting a group from a pre-existing list.

If you've already set up a Groups.io group for testing, look at the Billing
page. If you haven't read about the plans here:
/static/pricing

2) Write to [email protected] and ask if they will import your list for you.
If your pre-existing group had been a Yahoo or Google group there's a
mechanism to import those members lists automatically. I don't know if there
is one for Mailchimp, but I would expect that Groups.io can do something for
you.

Re: Files

To the best of my knowledge, you should be able to upload any type of file. Whether it will open would depend on how each person has their computer set up to handle that type. I most often use pdf since almost everyone has the reader.

Moving a subscriber list into Groups.io

Barrier Free BC

Hello,

As a visually impaired administrator, I've been using MailChimp for sending
e-mail newsletters/bulletins to our subscribers. I'm finding MailChimp to
be very unfriendly to screen-reading software. I thought I'd give Groups.io
a try.

Our Subscribers have already indicated that they would like to receive our
mail and I don't want to have to ask everyone to sign-up again. Is it
possible to import my subscriber list from MailChimp without having to
invite everyone to sign up again?

Thanks,

Reed

Hi,
Which files types work properly in Groups.io? I need to share lists of clickable URLs with my members.

Thanks,
Linda

Direct add of members - email delivery preference selection ?

In the direct add option it says that you can "append digest or nomail to the end of a line to specify either digest delivery or no email be sent"

so is that:

person@...

or?

person@... digest

or?

person @ domain.com

digest

Thanks for the help!?

I think an example there would be a good suggestion as an easy add.

Problem inviting members to our test group

I invited two people to help us test our test group. One a yahoo address and the other a gmail. Both said that when they received the invite they clicked on the web link to accept it (rather than email it back) and yet when they reached our group page there was no indication they'd been pre-invited so they clicked "apply to join..." And they applied and then I saw them in pending. After I approved them they are now members but I'm left confused by this process and so were they.

What am I missing ? Shouldn't they see something that says they've been pre-approved and then they are asked to set up a password or other? How does it work here on groups.io?

I've also posted in the Beta group because I thought I should mention the confusion these two newbies had.?

Thank you!

Maria?

Re: Group transfer questions

Thanks, Shal. Your mastery of all this business never ceases to amaze me.

"That's simple then. Just be clear about what you want when you email the transfer agent (Mark) when you're ready for the copy to proceed."

You apparently understand exactly what I want to do ... I hope I make it clear to the transfer agent and that it's simple.

"If the members are willing to join the Groups.io group to read the messages then there's no need for the Groups.io archive to be public. If that's a concern."

It is a concern. Probably up until the advent of Neo, this Yahoo group's archives were accessible by non-members of the group. It was becoming an occasional problem so I changed that.

"Yahoo Groups' controls are rather mucked up since the Neo redesign. In Group Settings what matters is the "Non Members can view messages" checkbox, under "Who can see:" in the box below the group type. If that ever comes unchecked then it disappears forever and your groups Conversations archive is at best members only."

Regarding my group type, Public, Restricted and Private are not checked. The fourth type, Custom, has a shadowy gray bullet. Below group type, under "Who can see" there is no "Non Members can view messages". The only item there that I have checked is "Non Members can view about group section". That's it.

Re: Group transfer questions

Stephanie,

My notion was to transfer just the messages (and just the one time), not
the members (now or ever).
That's simple then. Just be clear about what you want when you email the transfer agent (Mark) when you're ready for the copy to proceed.

I always remind the Yahoo members they can join the (problem free)
Google group to get the same messages sent to the Yahoo group. Groups.io
would just be another alternative to Yahoo, like the Google one is
now.
If the members are willing to join the Groups.io group to read the messages then there's no need for the Groups.io archive to be public. If that's a concern.

Well, I see I may have a problem here (?) ... Although the Yahoo group
says "This is a public group" (Group Settings), the "Messages-Who can
see" under Access Settings is set to Members.
That doesn't really matter. The members are already members in the Yahoo Group so they can see its archive (if they have web access) regardless. That said, the "Members" column of the Access Control table isn't the whole story.

Yahoo Groups' controls are rather mucked up since the Neo redesign. In Group Settings what matters is the "Non Members can view messages" checkbox, under "Who can see:" in the box below the group type. If that ever comes unchecked then it disappears forever and your groups Conversations archive is at best members only.

That checkbox, and its fellows, really belongs as another column in the Access Control panel, but that makes too little sense to Yahoo's UI designers. And given that they decided that membership and messages controls have to be bundled together into this omnibus "Group Type" option, they aren't entirely wrong: it would be an even bigger mess to have linked controls on separate tabs.
