That isn't strictly necessary, or shouldn't be.? Just a "partial" of the address before the @ will find any match. (It will also work on addresses that have something personal after the @ but they are less common.)
I get the feeling that the original query was posed after a search on "Pending" members didn't produce any results; as Duane pointed out the search needs to be done on "Members".
