Yahoo often did a poor job of checking whether group messages were actually delivered, and many of these people may have changed email addresses, etc. So losing a large fraction of your members to bouncing is common, and might be particularly so for an announcement group.
Perhaps a poor job of checking, but also perhaps the people who get lost on a transfer were "No Email" status in the Yahoo group. With no mail being sent to them by Yahoo, nothing was bouncing... which is how an undeliverable email address is detected.
