I don't think that happened.
All that Ellen said is that someone made purchases at Apple and used mizelly as his/her email address. That might have been a typo of that person's actual email or otherwise, but nothing in the story suggests that Gmail ever actually held that address as a separate account from Ellen's.
Regardless of what is as much conjecture as any I may have made, the mail was delivered incorrectly, which is why creating internal rules that make any part of an email address irrelevant is grossly irresponsible.
