The Saints 73-78
I just got my ticket for The Saints gig in London in November. It is not possible to say how excited I am about this! They¡¯re doing songs up to and including the 3rd LP. Anybody else going? I¡¯m also thinking of going to Bristol and I note they¡¯re doing a Marc Riley session. adam --

Series 5 episode 6 of Hanley Brothers podcast. Someone has finally shown them how to set the levels on their recorder. You can actually hear what is said! Shame so many classic guests were lost on the way... BTW the House of All were excellent when I saw them in Southampton the other year. Wish I could see them with Burns stve

Mark E. Smith: ¡°I was too soft with the band. I spoiled them to death¡¡±

"Seven years on from Mark E. Smith¡¯s death, MOJO revisits one of our last encounters with The Fall¡¯s autocratic genius." https://www.mojo4music.com/articles/stories/mark-e-smith-interviewed/ - I meant to say something on the actual anniversary day, this past Friday, but -- at least there's this.. I just now found out she recorded music. Gold is my favorite song from her. Too bad The Fall never recorded one of her songs.

Just happened upon this in the Chicago Manual of Style in my work today: Marquis Who¡¯s Who. Marquis Who¡¯s Who, 1898¨C. Continually updated. https://www.marquiswhoswho.com/. Could that be that be the inspiration? Best, Nina (ever woefully under-informed in Fall matter)

¡®Hex Enduction Hour¡¯: Mark E Smith and The Fall¡¯s full foray into magic realism
8
Music critics are not yet done foisting their random thoughts about the groop at us.. Reuben Cross@reumilcro Fri 15 November 2024 10:00, UK "The words of Mark E Smith were hard to decipher at the best of times. His famously monotone Mancunian drawl often came out garbled, and the fact that he spent a lot of his time intoxicated probably didn¡¯t help, but there was always a sense of intrigue in the things he had to say." more at: https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/mark-e-smith-the-fall-full-foray-into-magic-realism/ JC

shocking news: new House Of All, Deb from My Bloody Valentine, a Banshee & more Keanu!
3
Sorry to forward spam here, which no doubt many of you have already seen, but it seems notable enough to document here at least.. I actually said "Holy cow!" when I opened this email! JC ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Tiny Global Productions <tinyglobalproductions@...> Date: Thu, Nov 14, 2024 at 2:15 PM Subject: shocking news: new House Of All, Deb from My Bloody Valentine, a Banshee & more Keanu! To: <j.a.curtis@...> HOUSE Of ALL SOULS . . . with Karl Burns! It may be the worst-kept secret in the Greater Manchester music scene, but yes . . . Karl Burns has joined HOUSE Of ALL as their third drummer. And by that we mean the third all at once, not the third in a series of comings and goings! Where's Karl been and what does this mean? We wish we could tell you, but it's more than a little mysterious even to us. What it does mean is that on the next album, you'll hear three separate drum combos: the incredible Hanley / Wolstencroft pairing, the return of the Wolstencroft / Burns combo first heard on Middle Class Revolt, and of course some Burns / Hanley interplay as in the days of Hex Enduction Hour. We bet you can't wait for the new album, so rather than taunt you with news of a future announcement, we're taking preorders for it today! HOUSE OF ALL SOULS is the name, and we maintain that, without question it's their most superb long-player yet - ten new songs, several alternate universe hits and a few surprises! The music feels more like a band than ever before, and we're rather amazed by it. Each HOUSE Of ALL regular member's present, and in addition to the drummers, that's Martin, Pete and Stephen, and Pete's live fill-in, Phil Lewis, adds guitar, too. (One of our favourite songs has a sensational part where Pete, Phil and Martin play different guitar lines at the same time . . . pure ecstasy.) HOUSE Of ALL will be touring in Spring 2025, booked by Nightingales' own Fliss Kitson via Void Artists . . . watch for an announcement about that on Friday. We are offering a very limited edition translucent white vinyl version for early orders, so act now; we're also working on another surprise which will likely go along with that limited offering, too. But that's only if you order from Bandcamp, though, so hop to it! Hear the album closer, 'Born At Dawn And Dead At Sunset', and order here! DA GOOGIE + CARA TIVEY! My Bloody Valentine / Primal Scream / Billy Bragg "Fancy putting out a record by Deb from My Bloody Valentine?", Dave Callahan wrote. It'd be hard to say no to the illustrious bassist (who's also played with Primal Scream, Snowpony along with both Brix Smith and Thurston Moore), but why doesn't she ask Alan McGee or someone like that? Paint us suspicious! We decided to have a listen first and short answer? We have no idea. Her album, The Golden Thread, is an absolutely magical work, credited as da Googie + Cara Tivey, the latter of whom, by the way, may be best known for her work with Billy Bragg, though there's a small thread of connection with TGP by virtue of her playing on Robert Lloyd of Nightingales' solo records. The first single, "Dumb", is an apt anthem for the current days, but a magical piece of art, with an equally beguiling video. It's going to floor you . . . not exactly the noisescape of My Bloody Valentine, but a bass-based cousin with perfect open spaces, not exactly shoegaze, but hazy and insidious in the best sort of way, with odd bits of Cara's piano casting a different light on it all, just when you thought you'd figured it out. Like all works of inspiration and genius, it's hard to pin down the particulars of the album's magic, but we hope to have an answer by the next newsletter! We love it. Sadly, we won't officially announce this wonder for another three weeks, but we do want you to know that there are two shows coming up before then (one with da Googie solo, the other in which she's joined by Cara), which is your chance to hear some of the songs in advance, so check 'em out. London, November 30 - Kings Place (da Googie + Cara Tivey) https://www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on/contempora

I look at this site pretty much every week -- it is suddenly coming up as being "inaccessible." -- Anyone know anything about this? http://annotatedfall.doomby.com/ It's an invaluable site! I hope it's just a technical issue and not down for the count.. JC

The Fall band talk ¡®Grotesque¡¯! : the John Robb interview

"The former members of The Fall have taken control of their back catalogue with a novel rerelease schedule that recreates classic albums with live versions of tracks. They talk to John Robb about this and how they wrote the songs in the first place, dealing with the legacy and working with Mark E Smith." https://louderthanwar.com/the-fall-band-talk-grotesque/ JC

Couldn't Tell Lou Reed From Doug Yule
3
Hello. During the late 90s/turn of century took brief respite from listening/purchasing Fall music due to moving residences coupla times plus literal street living ie "homelessness". Anyways, when the 'New Fall LP' (formerly Country on the Click) was released, things were abit settled so purchased cd -- American/Narnack version, which thought was really good even great! That copy got replaced eventually by the UK/Action Records version with 'abstract' squares/eyes cover. Music & track order seemed different though very good also but not quite as good. Yesterday repurchased the American version (used -- listed as 'very good' condition) off eBay. Just wanted to rehear & decide whether after all this time still think US version is superior to UK version & if orig opinion was valid & truthful or maybe that opinion was "just in my head" due to the various circumstances or whatever & is perhaps not really truthful/valid anymore etc. Yes, is fun times!!

Steve Hanley & Kurt Cobain

Marc Riley just told a story about Steve Hanley refusing a request by Kurt Cobain to let him travel on the tour bus with The Fall across America. This was when Kurt Cobain was a global superstar! Apparently Doc Shanley knew exactly who he was at the time. Adam --
