They settled on something of a unique solution: to recreate releases they had appeared on but from live recordings taken at a variety of shows. I know not everyone is into lyrical archaeology. But I am, so. Hot on the heels of my recent confirmation that some of the lyrics to "Oh! Brother" come from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, I've just tracked down what is almost certainly the source of the "Used table leg to club son-in-law" line in "2 x 4". The earliest known performance of "2 x 4" was at Rock City, Nottingham, on 27 September 1983. In the Manchester Evening News of 20 August 1983 (p29), I found the following headline: "Father, 70, used table leg to club his son-in-law". I don't think this is a coincidence. And of course not the only example of newspaper headlines getting incorporated into Fall lyrics.
