I agree that RT Systems software is easy to use, but one reason many don't use it is that it costs more than the radio to get the software, and same for the cable. I've used both on various radios and I find CHIRP as easy to use as RTS's software now, unless I want to pre-populate the memories with what the software thinks are the closest repeaters. I can still do that with CHIRP, but it's an extra step. Many of those in the list from RepeaterBook are just paper repeaters, either no longer in use or never in use, just taking up a frequency allocation. If money is no problem, I recommend RT Systems software to others, but usually, when buying a $17 radio, they're trying to save money, buying a cheap radio instead of one from the big three (Kenwood, Icom, Yaesu), and that's why they come here or to our CHIRP group, to learn how to program their radios with the free CHIRP. I used RT Systems on my UV-5R before and it works well. So does CHIRP, though, and it's easy enough to use. I've actually used CHIRP the last few times I programmed UV-5Rs for friends. I've also used various cables with success, even one of those octopus cables with 8 different connectors on the radio end, with success. (I had to load a different driver but it worked fine.) One advantage with the RTS software is that they will hold your hand for you if you need help. I never needed their help but it's nice to know it's there, and reports are that they're very pleasant to deal with if you call them for help. With CHIRP, you are pretty much on your own or you have to use forums to find out what you might be doing wrong if you can't figure it out yourself. RT Systems is a company that exclusively makes programming software and programming cables. They are in GA.
The cables are guaranteed to work with their software and your computer.? Software can be downloaded or sent on a CD.? Cables can usually be used on multiple brands / models of radios.
Do they cost?? You bet!? Are they unreasonably priced?? Heck, no!? Can you get CHIRP for free?? Absolutely!? As they say, "You get what you pay for."
I've tried CHIRP on two different brands of radios.? It didn't work on either radio for me.? I've used RT Systems on all kinds of radios from Anytone to Yaesu and several in between.? They always work the first time, every time.? One time, it didn't.? I called customer service.? It was my goof, not theirs.? We both had a laugh over the radio being smarter than me.? Lol.

Have you downloaded the memory structure file from the radio first? Many don't realize this is the first step. You can't import anything but the specially structured file that was downloaded from the same model radio (or one you downloaded and changed yourself) then uploaded it to the radio.
That needs to be done first to set up the file that you're going to enter programming data into for each memory channel. Save what you downloaded, even if it has things on it you're going to erase, just in case you mess something up, so you can go back to this stage.
Then you can copy and paste into that downloaded form you have after downloading the file from the radio. Be sure you only copy columns into appropriate columns in your radio. There may be columns that aren't in the same place as the CSV file has. Or columns that are different. Don't change the positions of the columns.
Does this help?

RT systems make excellent software and proprietary leads. They are expensive but work. The support is fantastic.
Chirp is free and covers more radios than you can shake a stick at. Plus you can export by CSV and import to other radios (if they have same coverage/spec)
You make your own mind up.
RT that costs as much as the radio or Chirp

it does but unless? you have the odmaster Bluetooth to K-type dongle it won't work. Better off using Chirp with standard K to USB lead, you can export frequencies across many radio models/brands as long as the frequencies are compatible ie.. no Airband? - don't try forcing it to a radio that can't receive it. The import will fail.

Re: Baofeng UV-5RM Plus help with resetting
The seller did contact me pretty quickly last night, but I did get it solved before that with an internet search and some trial and error.? The internet told me that the default Baofeng password is 000000, the trial and error was that you need to hit the menu button after typing in the password.
The power on resets I found online didn't work with this model.
So, if you get a used Baofeng with a password on it, try 000000 MENU to see if that unlocks.
I would never have a reason to password protect my Baofeng but I suppose some others might have need to.

Don't waste you time trying to get the password. This is Amazon's fault.

You have 2 options

1. Request a complete refund
2. Request a replacement new radio without a password at their expense.

Baofeng UV-5RM Plus help with resetting
I purchased a refurbished Baofeng UV-5RM Plug off of Amazon and it finally arrived today after UPS misplacing it for a week.? It looks in good shape but is password protected when I turn it on. The seller didn't provide the password.? Amazon has sent them a message but I wondering if there is a way to do a power on reset which will reset the radio when I don't have a password.??
Anyone know how to do this?

$15 & tax to upgrade to Wun 11 Pro 64 bit.

I asked the vendor I ended up using, which SAID it was Win 11 etc. and if there was not a way to avoid returning the Win 10 they erroneously sent. I was offered $30 and accepted.?

Now I see $99 and $159 and wonder if I stumbled onto a shyster. They do promise a key. They did return my $17, no questions asked.

A small aside; I ordered an external player to install some older software. I'm old school and like hard copies. That said, I have been out of the game and have forgotten entirely too much. I FEEL like I went from Win 3.1 through the gambit to Win 2000 in 5 years!
