Adding Members from RootsWeb
Fred,
I've found that it you export the email addresses from the existing RootsWeb admin console, you can do a mass invite from the Admin -> Invite in the Groups.io control for this group.? That should help people to get connected to the new mailing list if they would like to. Thanks, Kevin |
Re: Adding Members from RootsWeb
Kevin,
I've contacted the previous RootsWeb moderators (Carla and Dieter) and they are having trouble getting access to the mail list administrators pages. On my other RW mail lists I was able to download the active list of members and email addresses. 17c Post-War Repopulation of SW Germany
Hi all,
i am hoping that someone on this list can direct me to whatever information might exist for the repopulation of towns in Baden and W¨¹rttemberg after the 30 Years¡¯ War (1618-1648)? it is my understanding that most of the towns in these provinces lost something between 50% and 70% of their populations, and that many (most?) of them invited people from outside the provinces to come and repopulate their towns. ?But I have not been able to identify any records that would show such immigration? I have to believe that SOME records must exist, because: 1) Most towns had to vote to accept a new ¡°citizen¡± into their midst (and assign them a role, such as farmer, cooper, lumberjack, etc.); and 2) The regional Lord would have wanted to ensure that any new residents were added to their tax rolls. i have an ancestral line which I have traced back to the Rastatt District near Karlsruhe in Baden; as best as I have been able to confirm based on local parish records, my patriarchal ancestor suddenly appears in the town of Rotenfels about 1700 or so, with no other relatives living in the area prior to that point. i know that most of the town records from that time have long ago been collected and shipped to the Karlsruhe archives, and that I probably need to contact them; but I don¡¯t know exactly what I¡¯m asking for? can anyone offer me any advice on this? thanks in advance, Stuart |
Re: 17c Post-War Repopulation of SW Germany
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýStuart, Well, a good starting point in asking us (or anyone else ) these questions would be to give us the names of who you are looking for. I know of many Swiss, (mostly Anabaptists) who fled from religious persecution in the years after the 30 year war and went to Baden and Wurttemberg and helped repopulate those areas.? Many were skilled tradesmen as you say. I have a large database containing over 300 surnames, and I will freely do lookups for anyone who gives me the surnames and forenames of interest. Re: 17c Post-War Repopulation of SW Germany
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýStuart,I found that many of the church records mentioned the town where a person emigrated from.? For many of my Baden and Alsace ancestors, it was their marriage record in their new location that gave the key information.? For others it was their burial record. Also there are several books on Swiss emigration that include lists of names and the locations where they originated and settled.? Go to Familysearch.org and search their catalogue for "Swiss Emigrants". And, here is a journal article: 1983, Mennonite Family History:? p. 132-136.? Swiss Emigrants from 1694-1754 Who Settled in the Palatinate, Alsace-Lorraine, Baden-Wurttemberg, and Pennsylvania, Karl Joder.? At the time I was actively researching this group of ancestors, I was also able to find a number of online sources that included lists.? Unfortunately, all the links no longer work. Re: 17c Post-War Repopulation of SW Germany
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJennifer, Bruce, thanks for your thoughts. There seems to be a Presumption that my Bechmann ancestor emigrated from Switzerland (which most certainly cOntributed the vast majority of post-war immigrants to SW Germany). However, my suspicion is that my patriarch migrated to Baden from Saxony / Thuringia, for two reasons: 1) my patriarch appears to have been Catholic, as all of the ancestral BMD records were maintained in the local Catholic Church; and 2) I have identified (but not contacted) Bechmanns living today in that part of Germany. In regards to my original question, it seems my query to the Karlsruhe Landkreisse Archives should be about locating 17c tax records for the area to see if any notes were made at my ancestor¡¯s appearance. Has anyone had experience with getting a such tax records for their own research? Thanks, Stuart

Schmelzle 'n Hodapp names in Waldulm, Germany
Hello,
I am working on family of my paternal grandmother, Louise Emma Schmelzle b. 1883 in Waldulm, Germany under the County seat of Kappelrodeck. I visited there this past summer and found many names of probable relation, but the lack of fluent German kept me at a disadvantage. I was able to visit the churches and see the country side with many of the names back in my ancestry. ?Families bounce between Waldulm, Kappelrodeck, Am Bach, Muttert, etc. Grandma's parents were William & Katharine Hodapp Schmelzle mar. Nov 1882 in Ringelbach. By 1889 they had both immigrated to the USA. ?Grandma was left in Waldulm with her grandparents, I assume, Joseph & Maria Anna Pfeiffer Hodapp mar. Sept 1848 in Waldulm at St. Albins. From here I go back with the names of Fischer, Lamm, Steinruck, Spath, & Hirth On the Schmelzle side I go back to Fischer, Oberle, Kocenninger, Bohnert, Huber, & Schnurr. Several cross over names are on both sides.... Would love to hear from anyone who is working on any relationships within these lines. Ruth in Illinois, USA |

Familien Namen - Kraus, Halbherr, Mayer, Rei?er, Butscher, Edler, Schmid of W¨¹rttemberg
Hello everyone
I'm researching my husband's paternal ancestry of W¨¹rttemberg. With help from family in earlier times, I've traced the Kraus family back in a direct line (essentially) to mid 1600s. Johann Kraus married Barbara SCHMID in 1685 Unlingen, Bibernach (had at least 3 children) Christian Kraus married Maria EDLER 1708 Unlingen (had at least 10 children) Karl Kraus married Anna BUTSCHER1745 Unlingen (had at least 7 children) Johann George Kraus married first Clara REI?ER 1774 Gauingen (had at least 3 children) and then Anna HERTER (had another 4 or more) Hygin Kraus married Anna MAYER 1804 Zwiefalten (had at least 8 children) Karl Kraus married Maria-Anna HALBHERR 1852 Zwiefalten (had at least 14 children) I would be most interested to have contact with anyone who can assist me further please. In particular documents and related family names would be great. Thank you. Kind regards Elizabeth Kraus (Australia) |
Re: Familien Namen - Kraus, Halbherr, Mayer, Rei??er , Butscher, Edler, Schmid of W??rttemberg
Elizabeth,
You know you are near the beginning of the available records in much the Wurttemberg area because of the (1618-1648). The 30-Years War was between the Catholics and Protestants where each were rampaging the region burning each others churches (and records). Where records do exist there may be a gap in that period making it difficult to go further back with accuracy. The earliest possible records would be circa 1550, when the churches (both Catholic and Protestant) started recording the BMD records for common man. If you can make a connection to royalty you may be able to go further back. ? I see some of those people are indexed in the databases at FamilySearch, but there is no linkage to a FS Family Tree. I've started your family at FS FT for you with Karl Kraus and Maria-Anna Halbherr. See FSFT ID = What was the religion of the family? The daughter of Karl and Maria Anna, Sofie, was baptized in the Evangelische (Lutheran) Church in Kirchberg (OA. Gerabronn). Her marriage was also recorded the same church in Kirchberg, but was solemnized in Stuttgart. Apparently none of the other children were Evangelische, nor was their marriage. Did Sofie change religion?? There is no marriage in the Evangelische Church in Zwiefalten for Karl and Anna Marie. The Catholic record microfilms for Unlingen, Gauingen, and Zwiefalten are all digitized, however none are indexed. The digitized microfilms are restricted and may only be viewed at an LDS Family History Center. Hans Kuner, mid 1500's, Bretten
Hi Everyone,
Being relatively new to this site, I'd like to reach out to anyone that might be familiar with the Nussbaum, Baden, Bretten areas.? I'm looking for any additional information on my 13ggrandfather, Hans Kuner, born around the mid to late 1500's.? He was married to Zypora N., possibly Naeglin.? In my OSB book for Nusbaum, he is listed as being from Bretten. Nancy |

There are several pieces of information that would be of help. First, what was the family religion?? Then, what records do you have now? The records for Bretten (4 miles away from that Nussbaum) appear to start in 1565 in 2 different Evangelische (Lutheran) churches. There is a marriage record of Zipora, widow of Hans Kuener, to in 1599 in Bretten. See ? Attached is a copy of that record (LDS 1189883 pg 571 #22). That means there might be a death record for Hans and in addition a lead to a marriage record that might give Zipora's father and home village and Hans' father and home village. There is an entry in FamilySearch Family Tree for your couple. The original entry was by FamilySearch, but there were also entries by a Kurt Kastner <kk248@...>.
