My wife and I both got a Google Voice number so that when we were required to provide a phone number at some site or service, we could use it rather that put our own iPhone numbers out there and invite spam calls.

I’ve read a few web pages on how to get started with Google Voice. I gather that at a certain point, you give the (presumably mobile) number you want to link to Google Voice, it sends a code by text to that number, you enter the code on their webpage, and you continue from there. I don’t have the exact link handy, but ISTR that one web page said you can try to link to a given number only once. When I got my cell phone, at first I got calls for the person who’d had the number before me. (Her first name was Amy and her last name began with B, so, coincidentally, we had the same initials.) I told the callers that she no longer had the number, and the calls for her tapered off. I’ve had my current cell number for quite a few (I think at least 15) years, so I assume there shouldn’t be a problem, but better safe than sorry. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Computer access PIN

When I plug my iPhone 12 mini into my Windows computer I get a popup asking if I want to allow the computer to access the phone. That's fine

Since the last iOS update, after I touch 'Allow' I get prompted for my PIN. That's a mild irritant. Has anyone figured out how to switch that hurdle off?

Photos won't sync

For many years I have used itunes to sync my iphones with my Windows computers. Currently a completely updated iphone 11 (ios 17.5.1) syncs with itunes updated to v. 12.13.2.3.

I added new photos to the iPhone files folder on my Windows 11 64 bit PC and synced as usual. The new photos did not sync, and I checked all the settings which are absolutely correct. Reboots of both PC and phone made no difference. However, I noticed that the usual message to enter the phone's PIN was very late in coming, and the message to authorise access to photos appeared minutes after the backup and sync had completed. That is ridiculous. This is a pretty fast PC working much as usual. I have checked everything - as I said I am a long way from being a newbie.?

Can anyone offer advice please, or has anyone else experienced this

What is ISTR?

The number confusion shouldn't be a problem, but don’t hold your breath.

I’ve kept my current cellular number for 24 years. An idiot commercial property maintenance manager transposed 2 digits as he gave out his number, for years. I haven’t had to answer middle of the night emergency calls, for my job, for years. It took a few years to track him down. I left him and the company voice messages for years. No response. I then threatened him. Nothing. So then I left him and the company one more message. I would start messing with his vendors, contractors and customers at the expensive commercial properties. Still no response, but I haven’t had a call in about 4 years.

Re: Notes disappearing

I have no idea why that happens.

Have you tried just force-quit the Notes app & re-loading, rather than doing the whole phone off & back on?
If that works, at least it's easier & faster than a complete re-start.

I find that my notes (on an up-to-date [SE2 I think] iOS17) are either very slow or reluctant to update when I switch to the app (& know I've made changes to certain notes. So I do the quit-app-&-reopen.

Re: Visual Look Up

I’ guessing, but would try Settings>Siri & Search to see if Show in Look Up and Show in Spotlight are active on your phone.

?
Bingo, Pat! ?I would never have thought to look there…but that’s exactly what was required.
?
I suspect that I inadvertently turned that setting to Off (it is turned ON by default, because it was ON on my wife’s iPhone and she almost never fusses with settings unless I suggest something to her) or it got turned off in the wake of one update or another.
?
Whatever, my thanks Pat,

Notes disappearing

I have an older iPhone 7 iOS 15.6.1 with lots of memory.
Regularly at least once a day when I try to read my “Notes” they vanish (the titles remain but no content. When I turn the phone off, and then restart, the notes all reappear.
Any suggestions as to why this happens or how to stop it?
Thanks for reading this.

If you do not have 6GB free on your computer HD, you may have a bigger problem than not being able to backup your iPhone.
?
Go to the System Settings > General > Macintosh HD > [Storage Settings] and at the top of the ensuing window, whatever the size of your HD, you should have 20% of it unused.

I was about to make the same comment.

Patti, please double-check your free space. If it really isn’t enough for one iPhone backup, start by seeing what’s using it all. You might, e.g., have multiple old iPhone backups you don’t need.

Re: Best way to back up iPhone

Gee, on another list you said you had too much iCloud storage.

Why don’t you back the iPhone there, before you get rid of the extra. Note the before and after amount of data on iCloud, and then decide if getting rid of the extra leaves you enough room to back it up in the future?

How to Mute a Call on Apple Watch

开云体育

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and an Apple Watch Ultra.

All the settings the article tells you to make are set correctly on both my devices but I cannot silence incoming calls using the sleep/wake switch, placing my palm over the watch face, or by pressing the side rotating button on my Watch.

OTOH, all these methods work on my wife’s iPhone and Watch.

I have restarted both the Watch and the iPhone and they still don’t work.

Can anyone suggest some setting I may have missed?

How to Mute a Call on Apple Watch

howto-mute-apple-watch-call-610x365.jpeg

Since the Apple Watch is tied to your iPhone, you’ve likely noticed that phone calls can be made or answered on your wrist. While you might know how to , did you know that you can silence or mute a call to your Apple Watch too? These are important tricks to know so that if your wrist starts buzzing and chiming and making a ringing sound while you’re either in a public place, or wanting some peace and quiet, you can quickly mute the Apple Watch.

We’re going to show you two different ways to mute and silence calls on your Apple Watch, and they’re both a little different but equally useful to know.

Mute a Call on Apple Watch by Covering the Screen

This is often the easiest way to mute a call that’s coming into your Apple Watch, it’s super simple:

  • When a call rings on Apple Watch, place your palm over the watch screen to mute the call

You will need to make sure that you have the “Cover to Mute” feature enabled, which is on by default on Apple Watch. If not, go to Apple Watch Settings > Gestures > toggle on “Cover to Mute”.

This feature gesture has been around for “>a while, so if you’re a longtime Apple Watch user you may already be familiar with it.

Mute Inbound Calls on Apple Watch with Side Button

Another approach to silencing inbound calls on Apple Watch is to press a button when a call comes in:

  • When a call rings on Apple Watch, press the side rotating button to mute the call

This trick may be more familiar to those of you coming from a deep iPhone background where you’re accustomed to .

One advantage to the button press approach is that you can often do it one handed, depending on where your Apple Watch sits on your wrist, by simply flexing your hand and wrist up, or doing a push-up motion against a wall, or even against an object, and this can be useful when you’re working out or your other hand is busy.

Important: these tips work to mute incoming calls on a per-call basis

It’s important to note these tips will mute incoming calls only on a per-call basis. They will not permanently mute the Apple Watch, or phone calls on the Apple Watch.

If you’re looking to disable phone calls to your Apple Watch, that can be accomplished separately.

You could try one of the following solutions. The first just stops your Google account from automatically adding contacts. ?The second one disables using Google contacts on your iPhone. ?The latter is a bit more drastic, but it would be a viable option if you don’t want to use Google contacts.
