Georgetown to Downtown Safety Project Update
Crews have been making steady progress on completing the protected bike lanes on Airport Way S. We rechannelized the road to accommodate the future protected bike lane and other design elements that aim to improve safety for all travelers. You will begin to see the bike lane fully take shape during the next few weeks, along with other pedestrian and safety improvements in the project area.
As early as February 24, we will remove the southbound right-turn slip lane from Airport Way S to S Lucile St. Southbound passenger vehicles on Airport Way S will continue to be able to make right turns onto S Lucile St. However, freight and oversized vehicles will be detoured via right turns onto 13th Ave S, S Bailey St, and then onto S Michigan St. We will provide clear detour signs well in advance of the detour as well as post the detour map on this website. We advise freight operators and those who drive oversized vehicles to plan ahead and use patience while traveling through the area.??
Over the next few weeks, youll see the following construction activities in the area:
Airport Way S
- Installing concrete protected bike lanes on 6th Ave S from S Alaska St to S Bradford St
- Installing improvements to utilities, sidewalks, and curb ramps on Airport Way S near the intersection of S Lucile St
- Electrical improvements at the intersection of Airport Way S and S Lucile St
6th Ave S
- Installing concrete protected bike lanes on both sides of 6th Ave S from S Alaska St and moving north from the intersection
What to expect during construction:
- The southbound right-turn slip lane from Airport Way S to S Lucile St will close as early as February 24.? Freight and oversized vehicles will be detoured via right turns onto 13th Ave S, S Bailey St, and then onto S Michigan St.?
- The northbound through-lane on Airport Way S will be reduced to a single lane 24/7. We recommend commuters driving northbound to detour to 4th Ave S before S Lucile St.
- Night work on Airport Way S on Thursday, January 30th and Friday, January 31st will also reduce through-lanes to one northbound and one southbound
- Pedestrian access will be maintained. Pedestrian detours may be longer than usual
- Access to businesses will be maintained
- Typical work hours are from Monday to Friday, starting at 9:00 AM and finishing at 3:00 PM
- We will avoid work and traffic control during the peak hours of 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
- We may need to temporarily change the traffic flow to accommodate the construction work.
- There will be temporary restrictions on parking.
- Some of the work activities might be noisy. This includes using backup alarms for safety, heavy vehicles, and power tools.
- Some construction may require temporary changes to bus routes. Visit the??for rider alerts.
Construction work at the Airport Way S and S Lucile St intersection is expected to continue through February 2025. We will continue to post bi-weekly construction updates on this webpage and the project listserv through construction.?

Hey !
Were urging you to vote YES on to fight back against corporate greed and fund the social housing Seattleites overwhelmingly support. Election day is this Tuesday, February 11thonly two days away!? ?
If it passes, Prop 1A would generate an estimated $50 million/year for social housing by taxing the wealthiest businesses on their highest-paid salaries. This funding would: |
- Create publicly owned, permanently affordable housing that stays in public hands forever.
- Build sustainable, green housing that meets Seattles highest environmental standards.
- Establish mixed-income communities where higher rents help subsidize lower-income households.
|
Prop 1A is by unions, climate groups, local businesses, and progressive organizations. ?
Alternatively, instead of implementing a new tax, Prop 1B would actually divert $10 million/year from existing funding for affordable housing. Prop 1B receives , and does not actually fund social housing.? |
|
|
|
Statistically, . This means that your landlord and your boss have probably already voted. Make sure you do too!? |
|
|
Already voted? Text five friends and remind them to vote YES on Prop 1A ? Let's show Amazon and the other big businesses that have been driving our housing crisis that when we fight, we win! |

| | | Oceania Healers Initiative |
| The Covid 19 Pandemic of 2020 devasted our Pacific Islander communities who suffered six times the death rate and 12 times the hospitalization rate compared to other racial groups in Washington state and across the country. Pacific Islanders from all regions of Oceania who spoke many different languages came together to heed the call of healing that our communities needed. Western healing institutions and public health were littered with cultural and racial barriers.
In 2022 due to the work of Pacific Islander community healers, we became the most vaccinated community in Washington state. Our lessons were: we need to continue to resource our own Oceanian healers with the tools and knowledge to save our people. We also needed to couple our health interventions with language access, access to cultural foods, and create spaces of learning, belonging and care.
We are now standing up our Oceania Healers Initiative to continue the healing that our Oceanians need from our own hearts, hands and feet. Oceania Healers Initiative equips Pacific Islander trusted messengers with the tools to combat disease and early death through learning both Western and Indigenous approaches to heal our people. These are monthly sessions with 30 Oceanian Healers and our doctors working together to find new innovative strategies to keep our families well. Our first session covered Diabetes and in February we are discussing Hypertension. Please email us if you would like to get involved. |
| | | | Undoing Institutional Racism |
| Oceania Northwest joins Common Good Tacoma in attending a two-day training with the Peoples Institute Northwest in the beginning of this month where we went through a process of learning the definitions of racism, the causes of poverty, the root of systemic violence and also learned some anti-racist principles to help us become stronger in our movement to combat poverty in our communities. We will continue to lean into our nets of support all around us so that we are not doing this work in isolation but in collective accountability. We are committed to creating more spaces in our community to teach antiracism principles and antiracism organizing. |
| | | | Thank you, Oceania Northwest villages of care, for all of the ways that you continue to build community with us. We are one in heart and one in spirit. We are so grateful that our villages continue to bring life to the values of our Oceanian ancestors through the hospitality that we extend to each other, the unity that we celebrate, the Oceanian heritage that we share and the belonging that we extend to each other. E soo le fau i le fau! We are hibiscus fiber bonded with each other to make strong ropes to be used for the building of our communities material well-being. Faafetai tele lava. |

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose vision of justice, equality, and unity still resonates deeply today. His work and teachings continue to inspire movements for change and remind us of the importance of collective action in the fight for equity. This month also reminds us of the ongoing work needed to achieve justice for those who have been left behind. The journey toward a more just society continues, and it's essential to recognize the mutual efforts and voices advocating for positive change across all sectors. Lets keep advancing to create a world where justice, equity, and opportunity are accessible to everyone. The environmental justice movement is built on resilienceour ability to push through challenges and keep fighting for change. Dr. King taught us that resilience means turning adversity into movement-building. l. As Dr. King said, We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope. Together, we will rise and build the future our communities deserve. |

CURB would change Washingtons permitting process to include frontline communities and environmental justice concerns. By amending the permitting process, CURB would require a new or existing project impacting the land, water, or air to complete an Environmental Justice Impact Assessment and consult with community. This process would happen when a permit resides in a frontline community based on the WA Health Disparities Map. This year, CURB is House Bill 1303 and Senate Bill 5380.

The Duwamish Air Improvement Study for Youth (DAISY) ProjectThe DAISY Community Health Worker Team was busy this month with several outreach events. You might have seen us at the library, the neighborhood center, or at some local schools! You might have also heard us on the radio providing information on the cumulative impacts that the Duwamish Valley faces from the heavy traffic and emissions due to the following nearby sites: three highways, two airports, multiple industries and other sources that may affect our health. Our team of Community Health Workers will continue to stay busy through tabling events, video announcements, and other outreach methods so if you have any questions about asthma or DRCCs work please stop by. If you ever see us, be sure to say hi! |
|
|
We're still actively recruiting for DAISY so help spread the word! If you or someone you know could benefit from this study, feel free to share this flier. Together, we can help our kids with asthma.

As we celebrate Black History month this February, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you that Black Excellence is celebrated everyday! On Saturday January 18th, we gathered all of our DVYC youth for a special youth-led MLK march and celebration in partnership with Seattle Parks & Recreation. Although it was a cold day, the weather was perfect for a trip to Martin Luther King Memorial Park, where we received a special annual sweatshirt to mark the occasion, and had hot cocoa to keep us warm. After spending time enjoying the park and each other's company, we gathered around to listen to stirring speeches from a local youth leader as well as a minister from a nearby church. Afterwards the youth were given signs and we marched from the park to the Rainier Community Center. Along the route we were led in chants to call for unity, justice and peace. It was wonderful to witness the youth raise their voices in collective power. When we reached the Rainier Community Center we gathered around at tables, played games, listened to great music spun by a live DJ, a local rapper, and enjoyed some of the best food Ive ever had in my entire life catered by Seattle Soul Kitchen. Check them out whenever you have the chance! There was also a raffle and several of our youth won gift cards and self-care kits! This gathering also recognized the incredible contributions of Carmen Martinez and Ms.Tolson, who have always gone above and beyond to create safe spaces for youth, especially at the South Park Community Center. We all had a wonderful time and are grateful to our partners at Seattle Parks & Recreation for hosting this inspiring event! |
Join us on congratulating our three staff members on a year at DRCC. Thank you Melissa, Mia, and Joseph for the dedication and love you bring to your work for the Duwamish Valley. |
