Re: Rocky 1.2 released, with SSB mode

Fred Krom

Hi Alex,

I did install the version 1.2 and try to run it at 96KHz, there is a strange
sound. At 44KHz it works ok.
When I look at the m-audio 44 control pannel I see the it is at 44khz when
rocky is at 96KHz? When I switch it to 96KHz (and lock it) rocky works ok.
Is it a program error or is it somting in my installation.

SSB is now supported, with a twin-PBT filter. Another new function is
continous wav playback.

20 meter v5.0 SoftRock playing well

kb9yig

Good Morning All,

A v5.0 SoftRock setup for 20 meters is now playing nicely. I don't
have a calibrated source for 20 meters to check its MDS but it seems
to hear about as well as my SDR1000.

The toroid cores needed to complete the v5.0 alpha kits still have not
gotten to me. If the cores are delivered today, it will be Monday
before the alpha kits can be shipped.

Later today I will post the updated v5.0 schematic to show what
component changes were necessary to get the 20 meter SoftRock to play
properly.

Tony KB9YIG

Re: SoftRock v5.0 alpha kit update - S/N #2 alive and well

Bill,

The pics look very good. I was looking at the IQPRO manual that just got on the internet, and I was wondering if the Rocky 1.2 phase and amplitude error compensation would also help with LO phase and amplitude errors? Any ideas on that?

Also the IQPRO looks like it will be a little pricey. All we would need for the Softrock v.5 would be digital quadrature signals, not the very good sinusoidal signals from the IQPRO which uses a 9854. Any thoughts??

SoftRock v5.0 alpha kit update

kb9yig

Good Morning All,

One more order of materials, (the toroid cores which were shipped on
10/31), for the v5.0 SoftRock alpha kits has not gotten to me as of
Thursday, November 3. So far two of the v5.0 kits have been mailed,
one of which was a built 40 meter unit for Alex to play with. If the
toroid cores come in today I will get the rest of the alpha kits
mailed out later today. Sorry for the delay in getting the kits sent
out.

I am currently building a v5.0 with the top board configured for 20
meters. Hope to have it playing properly later today and I will post
info concerning its performance.

John,

Thanks and I feel the same phenomena in using Rocky here!
No reaction is occur when I start the program. hi.
My lap-top pc has external Soundblaster Caad into the USB port
and input sound card set to this.
And the output soundcard set to internal.
But nothing occures...

No signal can be heard and no signal appears on the Rocky's
screen.

So I gave up today. hi.

Maybe my pc has less power...

Anyway thanks for your advice.

I have the same problem using my Dell 650MHz notebook but not with
the
3Ghz P4. I have a simular problem with Rocky and the automatic I/Q
balance. My guess is the computer is too busy and I/Q is running
in the
"background" when the computer finds the time.

With Rocky I am trying minimizing the program and letting the
screen
saver (blank only) kick in - then uses my DDS sig gen to sweep the
band
VERY slowly. I don't know how it will work yet.

Bill,

Thanks and I feel relieved to hear you!
Softrock will be my favorite receiver with QRP transmitter.
I plan to make a tiny transmitter suitable for this samll SDR.

You are correct - image null on the SoftRock with PowerSDR can only
be done
manually on the DSP tab. The auto calibration needs the SDR 1000
hardware
to work (have to look into why that is one of these days).

And no one agrees with this more than those of us working on the PowerSDR software. Rocky is a much better fit for the SR40 and we celebrate what Alex has shared with us. That said, watch 1.4.5 as it progresses. A MAJOR discovery was made in the callback from the audio system that, in my case, greatly increased the efficiency of the system, and on my personal machine, it really improved the overall responsiveness. Alex has done some brilliant things in Rocky and they are detailed on the web site. Watch this space as imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

I love my SR40, Rocky, SDR-1000, and PowerSDR.

Now, you really cannot do a fair comparison of Rocky and PowerSDR. The PowerSDR software was developed to support the SDR-1000 which is
MUCH more complex than the SR40. Support for the SR40 was added to
PowerSDR first by Bill Tracey and now officially by Flex-Radio in the
latest release. Rocky supports the SR40 and multiband variants but
does not support the SDR-1000.

I do believe that Rocky is a better fit to the SR40 than the PowerSDR
program is.

Prehaps the Flex software can be dialed in with some time and
attention where Rocky is more ready to play.
I can say that with my setup (2.4GHZ Dell and Soundblaster Live),
the Rocky program is noticably more snappy to operate than Flex
from the interface standpoint.
Having loads of fun here with the entire setup. Alex did a fabulous job - my thanks.

Re: Using SDR for study

KD5NWA

I would think that most people would be interested in a real time recording, so you could go back and listen to the contacts. A synopsis or just the waterfall display would be useless compared to the real thing.

What would be nice, would be to be able to set a time limit to the recording so you only record for X amount of time, after all, most bands are not open 24 hours a day.

At 07:32 AM 11/2/2005, you wrote:
Hello Alex,

I/Q recordings take a lot of disk space. At 96 KHz, a 24-hour file is
going
to be over 46 Gb in size! Perhaps it makes sense to save just the
waterfall,
at 10-second resolution only 64 Mb per day are required.
An excellent point! I had not considered the possibility of capturing an
entire days worth of data but that certainly does appeal to me.

Considering the size and cost of hard drive space today, not to mention how
cheap writeable CDs are, I wonder if a one second resolution would be
acceptable. Would this be 640 Mb per day? Or am I getting the math all
wrong? It's pretty early in the morning for me now. 8-)

Ray,

We have just finished qualifying a new soundcard for use with laptops
and the SDR-1000.? It is called the PreSonus FireBox.? It is a firewire
(IEEE-1394) soundcard with 6 inputs and 10 outputs.? It will take a
hefty processor to run it (~1.5GHz+), but will give comparable
performance to the Delta 44.

Eric Wachsmann

======================================================================
I know the Delta-44 is the "preferred" sound card by many for SDR use,
however I wonder which external card has shown the best performance
for use with a laptop.

The SB Audigy 2 NX USB and the SB Audigy 2 ZS Laptop (PCMCIA) cards
seem to have pretty good specs however I've noticed a bit of list
message traffic concerning difficulties a few users have had with
these cards when used with the Rocky software.

Have these difficulties been resolved in the most recent versions of
Rocky ? Any comments on the use of these cards (or others you have had
good luck with) with Rocky and other SDR software would be welcome.

Thanks & 73,
