painless and it's free. I'm on several groups that have already made

Re: Move to groups.io Poll results

There are other ways.

Google, facebook and others sell players to the computer game
industry. If you are want players to your new computer game
just order 5000 players from one of these companies. They would
charge USD 0.5 to 3 depending on how attractive your banner is.

If you are running the gaming bussiness you would find that most
new players will stay less then 5 minutes, only a small fraction
will contribute to your bussiness.....

This means "a few pennies everytime someone clicks" might actually
be a few dollars everytime someone clicks. I assume it is very
different for different kinds of AD links.

73

Leif

My understanding is that Google gets a few pennies everytime someone clicks on the top AD links.

I always use one down lower on the page.
They are still getting rich tho. ?

I'm interested in the posts that are not people drivelling on about how
to solve problems with Windows sound drivers :-)

I'd prefer plain-text emails to HTML, and I wouldn't follow the group
across to a forum. I'm already on a forum - which is one that I run,
which costs about 50 quid a year in servers and domain registration, is
entirely secure, not spied on by the NSA, and not selling information to
third parties. I find forums a total pain in the arse to use and prefer
mailing lists.

Alan

I don't buy it.? Who is paying for their hardware, server time, power, cooling, etc?

If Mark Fletcher is doing it out of the good of his heart, the question is why?? If it is truly free, then he is funding it until he can sell it to the next highest bidder.? That is way this works and lots of history on that.

Hey claims that the business is self funding, but he won't answer where the money comes from.? That was asked in November 2016 and he has not replied. ?

The do collect and share your meta data:

Non-Identifiable Data:?When you interact with Groups.io through the Services, we receive and store certain personally non-identifiable information. Such information, which is collected passively using various technologies, cannot presently be used to specifically identify you. Groups.io may store such information itself or such information may be included in databases owned and maintained by Groups.io affiliates, agents or service providers. The Services may use such information and pool it with other information to track, for example, the total number of visitors to our Site, the number of visitors to each page of our Site, and the domain names of our visitors' Internet service providers. It is important to note that no Personal Data is available or used in this process.

Business Transfers

As we develop our business, we might sell or buy businesses or assets. In the event of a corporate sale, merger, reorganization, dissolution or similar event, Personal Data may be part of the transferred assets.

Related Companies

We may also share your Personal Data with our Related Companies for purposes consistent with this Privacy Policy.

Groups.io may also in its sole discretion and at any time discontinue providing the Service, or any part thereof, with or without notice.

These guys are no different then any of the other 'free' services.? They make money by dealing with content that you supply them, even if it is MetaData.? And, don't kind yourself, even MetaData contains enough information to actually figure out who you are.? This has been proven in court in the US a few times.

Personally, I'm not really fussed and I likely won't move unless I have a requirement to be there.? I will ?just likely search the forum and see if there is an answer for my problem or not, as it isn't my group.? However, if you believe that Google is the big bad person in this, they are all in bed together in their own way.? Content is king as they say. ?:)

If you have time, read some of the Snowden documents.? If you don't, watch the movie on Netflix. ?

If you own a computer and it is actually connected to the internet, you are always being tracked.? If you are seriously concerned about that, get off the net (as in no connection).? Don't own any phone and pay cash for everything.

BTW, if you have ever been on a site and a popup comes up and says I see you are looking at this 'widget', can I help?? Well, there are tools used by the Amazon's of the world that actually 'watch' you navigate the store.? How long you stayed on a page, and every click you made within their store.? I've seen it in action.? Scary, isn't it.? I saw a sales presentation on it from another job I was in.

It's the same guy that started what became Yahoo Groups, so I assume he invested his money wisely and has been supporting out of his own pocket, so to speak. Those that have chosen paying groups are helping to support it as well.
