History and development of machines 2
Part development of steam engine and navigation equipment is the Development of machine tools. For thousands of years a lathe would Look lite this close to a mini lathe As time past looking more like this Bt late 1700's wood bed ways and chain for moving the carriage Thd cast iron bed ways racks for moving the carriage and back gear is into 1800's. Need better lathes for steam engine's, firearms and sewing machines. This about same started seeing the mills name after the mill file The first The first recorded rudimentary steam engine was the aeolipile mentioned by Vitruvius between 30 and 15 BC and, described by Heron of Alexandria in 1st-century Roman Egypt.[2] Several steam-powered devices were later experimented with or proposed, such as Taqi al-Din's steam jack, a steam turbine in 16th-century Ottoman Egypt, Denis Papin's working model of the steam digester in 1679 digester in 1679 The history of the steam engine dates back to the early 18th century. In 1712, Thomas Newcomen developed the first commercially successful steam engine, which was used primarily for pumping water out of mines. Earlier, in 1698, Thomas Savery patented a steam-powered pump, but it was Newcomen's design that became widely adopted. The first sextant was produced by John Bird in 1759. This after first steam engines the improvements on machine tools help this part too. Throughout the 19th century, the steam engine revolutionized industry and transportation, enabling the development of railways and steamships, which significantly impacted the Industrial Revolution. The steam engine's efficiency and versatility made it a cornerstone of industrial machinery until the advent of electric power in the 20th century. Now can howvonf improvement help other industries. I could fine any real data on how the astrolabe made in the 1200s. I would guess the use dividers like we use for laying out holes. Before today's mill a lot work machinist could layout to 0.005" [0.127mm] some could get within 0.001" [0.025mm]. So a 14" Diameter Astrolabe division could off by about 5 mile but with other sighting errors and chart errors they happy with 20 miles . More information on history of sextant in pdf below. Dave

Use of Transit for machine tools and the difference
What is different between a Astrolabe , Clinometers , Sextant, Bubble Sextant and Transit/Theodolite. 1) Astrolabe , Clinometers is basically a plumb and a protractor apx ?¡ã some are deviations ?¡ã and you slip to ?¡ã [15 minutes] readings. This the lowest cost a protractor from dollar store and strar with string and old rusty nut for plumb bob Other low cost Clinometer More common type use primary on trees The is call a Clinometer but also could be a Astrolabe or Sextant Low accrucy High end Clinometers with range finder 2) Sextant measures angles between two objects typically the horizon and Sun or Stars 6 minutes to 20 seconds Use veneer or a worm gear. Very costly use on Large Ships Small size for lifeboats and practise 3) Bubble Sextant Use a bubble level because the horizon is not a option 6 minutes to 20 seconds. Use veneer or a worm gear. 4) Transit/Theodolite use a bubble level but can measure the angle between two objects 30 seconds for Transit and Theodolite is 20 seconds to 5 seconds only uses a veneer for greater accuracy , except for electronic type. This is a Transit and also call a Theodolite A Theodolite has to be accurate to 20 minutes and the telescope rotat 360¡ã This photo shows the 360 has all spec for a Theodolite too. This the one use for testing machine tool accrucy like rotary tables and deciding heads. This sitting on my work bench last month. The veneer graduate to 20 seconds The sextant and Transit/Theodolite. has a lot uses beyond the building or navigation. Just one is in machine tools for testing and settup. Why NAVY goes back to the Sextant
I think answer the why NAVY is bring back Sextant around 2016. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LORAN-C_transmitter_Fallon They had no backup to GPS Just think of a America Aircraft Cary at sea and do not know where they are because GPS is down. https://www.npr.org/2016/02/22/467210492/u-s-navy-brings-back-navigation-by-the-stars-for-officers?t=1602601932215 Dave
