1) Astrolabe , Clinometers is?basically a plumb and a protractor?apx ?° some are deviations ?° and you slip to ?° [15 minutes] readings.

One set is about 70% and one about 55% I only use empty

I use for hand tapping
80% for aluminum and plastic
70% for free machining steel & brass
65% for steel like 1144, 1045 & hard brass
50% for high cabin and tool steel

In production tapping in A36 I use 70% it not free machining
Hand tapping 65%


FYI Most tap & dies with drill bits is 65% to 70%
Depending on how close they find drill bit They try for 70%

Hand tap in harder or deeper tap holes the 70% has a greater chance of breaking.

Fantastic video! For some reason I never thought of using a sawsall (reciprocating saw) for scraping. You don't get the feel for it, but for removing a lot of material it sure would ease the strain on the forearms.

I have a 1942 SB 10R (36") that I've converted to a 10L with the bigger spindle. The poor thing was badly abused and run dry many times, and the bed is quite worn down in the work area just off the chuck. I plan to build it up and scrape it back following a video from another fellow on YT, I'll try to find it again and post it. A clever bit of business using angle steel, rivet pins, and JB Weld. Not production level by any means, but good enough for us hobbyist types.
