From the President

CFA President

Rich Mastin

I am reflecting on the show as I write this report, and what a show it was! The CFA International Cat Show and Expo wrapped up on a high note, due much in part to the efforts of the show committee, CFA staff, CFA Marketing Committee, and so many other volunteers and supporters.

Coordinating a show of this magnitude, with 16 judging rings across two shows, a large shopping mall, continual presentations on two stages all day for two days, hospitality, announcing, advertising, decorating, and just trying to keep everything moving on schedule is a monumental task. It took many, many people and months of preparation to produce this show - and those efforts paid off.

The number of spectators was amazing! We pre-sold as many tickets as we had attendees at our 2019 show, and the spectators certainly seemed glad that we were back. Most presentations - held on both the main entertainment stage and the Cats 101 stage - were full of engaged guests. Their amazement was obvious as they walked through the benching area admiring and engaging with our breeders, exhibitors and the stars of the show, our breeds. The exhibitors were pleased to have flags and cards to denote if their cats were available for a bit of love or needed some personal space.

Many feline-based social media celebrities were on hand for presentations on the entertainment stage both days and our guests LOVED participating in their events. We were so fortunate to have the wide variety of presenters, many of which have their roots in the feline rescue community. This year's cat show and expo facilitated and strengthened the bridge between CFA and the rescue community.

The shopping mall was certainly one of our largest, with vendors from across the US, Canada, and Asia. And what a variety of cat and cat-themed merchandise they had!?

The show hall had several of the "I Am CFA" banners on display, and many exhibitors have commented on how much they love this new advertising campaign. Photographer Sarah Baker was present and shot even more photos of our exhibitors, including many of our European and Asian exhibitors. Many thanks to all who participated in this project.

Planning for next year's International Cat Show and Expo has already started. We will be at the I-X Center in Cleveland next year, October 12-13, 2024, and are considering a different hall with lower ceilings which should aid in the acoustics (on the other side of the concession area where the Halloween show was being set up during our show). We are also looking into other options to supplement the audio call for cats to rings.

Most of all, the support from our exhibitors makes this show possible. But what really makes this show not only possible, but a success is the interaction between CFA exhibitors and the cat-loving public. They are eager to learn about the various breeds, get up close and personal and touch our magnificent breeds - breeds they've only seen in pictures. Your efforts to educate and engage the visitors was unwavering, generous and exceptional. Folks were thrilled for the opportunity to visit with exhibitors and their cats and it showed on the smiling faces.

We want to hear from you! Tell us what you liked, didn't like, could be improved, etc. by leaving your comments at .

We'd appreciate hearing from you sooner versus later and no later than November 30, 2023. Your comments will only be seen by the show committee and are not available for public viewing. CFA International Show & Expo

Mark Hannon

CFA International Show Co-Chair

After a four-year absence due to Covid restrictions, the show was back bigger and better than ever. The show was held October 13-15 at the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio. With more than 750 entries from arounds the world spread between two shows, there was certainly strong competition in every class.?New this year were two rings on Friday limited to Opens, Champions, and Premiers (OCP).?There were 144 entered in the championship classes and 44 in the Premiership classes.?The culmination of the show was the selection of the Best In Show winner who this year was a stunning ruddy male Abyssinian, GC Omnia Mea Kot Da Vinci of Abycatle bred in Russia by Olga Berseneva who co-owns him with Timashkova and Lauren Castle-Flynn of New York City. (above)

We added ¡°& Expo¡± to the show¡¯s title this year because this was more than a cat show.?We wanted this to become one of the best-known cat events held.?There was lots of entertainment imported from around the country to keep the show¡¯s 15,000 visitors¡¯ attention.?Five different shelters had cats available for adoption, 100 vendors had products and services for sale, some popular online cats were present, and there was an education ring which this year was re-named ¡°Cats 101.¡±?

Clearly, a show of this magnitude was not possible without lots of volunteer workers.?Recognition goes out to committee co-chairs Ed Raymond & Mark Hannon, co-show managers Linda Murphy & Noralyn Heisig, and the many volunteers who assisted with announcing, hospitality, clerking, scoring, vendor coordination, etc.?This event would not be possible without the incredible work of our Central Office personnel headed up by Executive Director Allene Tartaglia.?The large gate and entertainment was coordinated by our Brand & Marketing Director, Desiree Bobby.?Thanks to everyone who pitched in.

CFA Judges' Association

What is a Guest Judge?

There are two different guest judges within CFA. One is when a CFA judge is contracted to judge for an association other than CFA and the other is when CFA clubs hire judges that are not licensed by CFA.

There are many CFA show rules and judging program rules that provide guidance for both of these situations. The CFA show rule 3.02 covers some of this. Part c starts ¡°Invitations from CFA clubs for non-CFA Judges are subject to the approval of the CFA Judging Program Committee¡¡±?

Approved foreign associations include all members of the World Cat Congress with exception of any association home based in the United States. At this time TICA and ACFA judges are not allowed to judge for CFA clubs. This does however allow clubs to select judges from many other associations including: Cat Fanciers Federation (CFF), Canadian Cat Association (CCA), World Cat Federation (WCF), and Federation Internationale Feline (FiFe).?

There are two levels of guest judges for non-CFA judges. The highest level is Approved Guest Judge. This level is for a judge who has completed at least three successful shows for CFA clubs within 3 years, has completed all the requirements, and wishes to accept more invitation from CFA clubs. There are 11 non-CFA judges who are at this level. Other non-CFA judges start at Guest Judge level and begin with a resume sent to the CFA judging Program for evaluation.?

Forms, current rules, and lists of judges are found on the CFA website, under , Guest Judges.???

CFA Regional News

Region 1

Sharon Roy, Regional Director

Let me start by thanking everyone for their support over these many years.

I know it may have been a surprise when I decided to resign as regional director.

It was a very difficult decision.?Contrary to some of the rumors that are

circulating, I had no plan to sabotage the region or to leave it without board representation.?While I hate to admit to an error, I truly thought there was time for a special election to occur.?I apologize to the region and the CFA Board for this.?Sometimes, you must make decisions for your own well-being.

Although it may seem as though I have been RD forever, it was actually just fifteen years spread over four decades.?After the first four years, I had no plans to run again, but I was asked, for various reasons, to reconsider.?In truth, I grew more politically savvy with each election.?I was naive in the 1990¡¯s when I was first elected.

For those who may not know me, I came to CFA in the early 1980¡¯s after my mother and I worked so hard to advance Tonkinese to Championship.?It was because of the fact we were showing frequently and the quality of the cats that we showed, that I was asked to apply to the CFA judging program.?(At the time, I was a CFF Allbreed judge.)?I am extremely proud of how far the Tonkinese breed and Tonkinese exhibitors have come since the early 1980¡¯s.

I have always worked hard for CFA, including major roles in hosting the 2012 Annual in Quincy, Mass and the 2019 Annual at the Turning Stone casino in upstate New York.

Truthfully, whether as regional director or not, I have helped with many NAR Regional meetings (& banquets). I will still be there for the region, should anyone ask me.

Again, thank you all for your support for all these years.?I leave you with a couple of wishes. Please treat each other with respect. Welcome new exhibitors, and try to be the best person, breeder, exhibitor you can be.

Hello all!?We are having shows again in our area after a very quiet summer.?The CFA NW Regional Awards banquet was held in Longview WA on September 30th.?It was hosted by Seattle Cat Club and Grandview Cat?Fanciers.?Beloved ¡°local¡± judge, Vicki Nye, reported the next week on social media that ¡°A good time was had by all.?After the six ring show, and many pitching in to tear down the show hall, everyone transformed to glam and sparkle for a fun awards banquet.?

Thanks to our regional Director Pam Moser, and her crew Tammy Roark, Kathy Durdick, Deena Stevens, Linda Flanigan, Neil Quigley, and Kendall Smith for pulling this all together.?Congratulations to all the winners!¡±?Another posting from newcomer, Julie Schrader-Choate, said ¡°Best part of showing cats - meeting others¡ Every single one of them are caring, thoughtful, funny, witty, knowledgeable, and loving. The coolest of all is they share the love of the same hobby - Showing/Breeding cats.¡±??Thank you Vicki and Julie for saying it all better than I could have¡What wonderful tributes you both made to the fanciers and leaders of our region!

Region 3 also mourned the passing of our long-time friend and exhibitor, Toni Huff.?Toni was a fixture in our Region for many years, along with her husband Paul.?Toni was active in many clubs and could always be counted on to support shows throughout our region.?Toni will be missed, but she will stay in our hearts forever.

Kitties on the Bay presented by Cat Nation Fanciers, September 30th, 2023

?Christine Brown

Cat Nation Fanciers would like to thank the exhibitors, spectators, judges, clerks, and our local 4-H Cat Club for joining us on September 30th for Kitties on the Bay in Erie, PA at the beautiful Bayfront Convention Center.

With 162 cats present representing over 30 breeds and household pets, the exhibitors experienced good competition and the spectators experienced a diverse representation of breeds to see and learn about.

In addition to the five all-breed, one specialty, and 6 household pet judging rings, we had super specialty for kittens, championship, and premiership cats, which allowed the top ten longhair and shorthair specialty cats to also earn all-breed placements in each of the classes.?

Many cats enjoyed feline agility with Pete Deal as ring master with twelve agility entries competing for best time and many others giving the course a trial run to try agility for the first time.?Beth Deal had a special birthday present when Foxy completed the course with a 9.69 second agility run!

Youth from our local 4-H Cat Club helped us with stewarding, competed in the Household Pet class, and were the distinguished judges for the cat costume contest.

The raffle table was wonderful with many very nice baskets to choose from, many vendors were on hand with their cat themed items for sale, and Emerald Snow joined us from Toronto, Ontario as the show photographer.

If you missed the Cat Nation Fanciers show this year, please be sure to look for us in 2024.?We look forward to seeing you and purring with us on the shores of Lake Erie!

Region 7

Kenny Currle - Regional?Director

Great things happen when people (or clubs...) join together for a common cause. For the weekend of September 16-17, that cause what the Daytona Cat Week show in Daytona Beach, FL. Cat Club of the Palm Beaches, New Vision CC, and Classy Cats CC under the direction of show managers Kenny Currle and Karen Lane worked together for months preparing for this showcase show. This was the first show back in Daytona Beach in many years, and it reminded folks of just how much cat shows are in this lovely area.

Then the?members of Cotton States decorated each ring with a different theme and of course they were breathtaking!

Exhibitors had special badges to let them into the show hall.

Weeks of local and FB publicity resulted in a large spectators. Kudos to Melody Boyd, Mike Altschul, and Michele Lukic for their tireless efforts with publicity.?Charlene Campbell coordinated local rescue groups to give them space at the show and they had many cats present (with Carol Fogerty handling them for the public)looking for new homes - and by early Saturday afternoon, they were all adopted!

Exhibitors had a wonderful time at the show too! In addition to judges from across the region, the show featured TWO judges from outside of the US: Pam DelaBar from Finland and Yaeko Takano from Japan. The spacious, comfortable hall lent itself nicely to visiting and celebrating with friends!

This regional fund-raising event would not have been possible without the support of so many people from across our region, and from one special person outside of the region: Kim Everett-Hirsh. She (and many others) provided both donations to the show and a special award for highest scoring cat in Championship.

Many thanks to all who supported this special show with your entries, donations, and efforts! Plans are already underway for next year's show.

Region 8

Yukiko Hayata, Regional Director

Starboard Cat Fanschers' first show was held on September 30 in Nagoya. A lot of celebratory flowers were received. The entry also reached the limit of 120 entries and was closed early.

On October 8th, Japan Regional Cat Show were sponsored by Royal Canin and entried with 136 entries at Ikebukuro Sunshine City. The show had 6 AB rings with Larry Adkison from the United States and Neil Quigley from Canada were invited judges, along with 4 Japaneses judges.

There were lectures on ¡®How?to Enjoy the Cat Show ¡® and "Feline Kidney Disease Seminar" by veterinarians. It was a successful day that we were able to contribute to events such as online cat shows and introduce CFA to the audience also find newcomers.

New Texas Regulations in the Works

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and its governing board, the Texas Commission on Licensing and Regulation, are about to engage in the rulemaking process, not once but twice, to adopt new rules for the state's Licensed Breeder Program. At the September 1, 2023, Licensed Breeder Advisory Committee , the committee discussed why rule changes were needed. This year's enacted , which reduced the licensing threshold and expanded the dog breeder exemptions, along with a change in fees, group record-keeping provisions, and general housekeeping issues necessitate the first proposed rule change. These rules must be expedited since affected breeders must be licensed by January 1, 2024. The committee provided its advisory vote to approve the draft of the proposed rules. Next, the Department will publish a Summary of Proposed Rule changes in the Texas Register on September 22. Then, public comments will be accepted until October 23. Instructions are .

Informative presentations about the Texas Administrative Procedure Act, including the rulemaking process, Open Meetings Act, and Public Information Act, were presented during the meeting for fanciers wishing to review that information. The committee will meet again on November 1, 2023.

The timeline mandated by SB 876 requires handling the second rulemaking effort dealing with recent changes to the federal standards regulation separately. The 2011 Licensed Dog and Cat Breeders Act mandates that state rules meet the federal regulations at a minimum. Thus, state rules must be updated when federal regulations change. Remember, nothing prevents the state from exceeding federal regulations and possibly opening the door to prohibitive barriers to licensing. These rule changes are expected to take longer and would delay those required by SB 876. The federal regulations are in The Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations. The section dealing with standards is 9 C.F.R. Part 3, Subpart A; it starts on page 126.

The hot weekend didn¡¯t stop the almost 200 entries from supporting the club and show. They had great gate come in both days to help cheer for their favorite cat costumes. Saturday¡¯s crowd favorite was the Runaway Bride and Sunday was the Cat and his Mouse.?

We held a Maine Coon Cat Summit where all Maine Coons competed against each other over all the classes to see who would be the Highest Scoring Maine Coon Cat in show. The Maine Coon exhibitors enjoyed getting a chance to see all the Maine Coons in one place at the same time. Congratulations to the following Maine Coons and their owners:?

The Sacred Cat Of Burma Fanciers CFA show was held the weekend of August 26-27, 2023 in Medina, Ohio. This show was a very special one for this club, as it celebrated its 50 year milestone! The show this year was also near and dear to the heart, as it was dedicated to the memory of Julie Collins and Thomas McIlrath, Two long standing members of the club. The show had an awesome raffle table, with so many wonderful items to win. One of the things we always look forward to about this location is the delicious homemade food prepared with lots of love.

The show hall was nice and spacious and beautifully decorated. We had the amazing Larry Johnson, ready to take pictures, tons of spectators, and as always stunning cats, especially the Birmans!?Thank you to all the judges who handled our babies with care, and of course thank you to all the exhibitors who entered and supported the show.

Last, but not least, a huge shout out to the club members for all their hard work in putting on a successful show! 50 years is such an amazing accomplishment and it speaks volumes about the love and dedication you have for the breed. Next year cannot come soon enough!

Thank you to all involved!!

Cat owners in Maui are still working through the devastation caused by the recent fires. This recovery will be a long-term effort. In addition to the many cats displaced when their homes were destroyed, there were local rescues managing feral cat colonies through trap-neuter-release programs, and their veterinary facilities have been lost. It will take time and dedication to rebuild these networks to manage the local cat populations, and find homes for cats from these colonies whose habitats were lost. Fanciers in Hawaii have been working diligently to raise money to help these efforts, and CFA Fanciers from all over the world have been very generous in their donations.

There was a cat show by Japan Dancing Cat Club in Kamata, Tokyo on July 29th. Tokyo is having a hot summer that We¡¯ve never experienced before. Among them, the cat show is difficult for both exhibitors and cats but 125 entries from all over Japan gathered and a grand cat show was held.

On the day, the exhibitors were enjoying lunch box(Bento) by very famous restaurant?IMAHAN for sukiyaki.

A reminder to fanciers and clubs that donations to the CFA Breeder Assistance Fund are really needed.?We are very much aware of the horrific fires in Maui, flooding in Beijing, damage from Hurricane Idalia (and Hurricane Lee remains a threat), but now also flooding in Greece where animal rescue organizations are stretched to their limit.?Tenerife fires were finally contained but now a disastrous earthquake in Morocco (and we still have not heard from one of our breeders there).?The war in Ukraine still threatens the lives of our friends and is causing unbelievable hardships for breeders.?Please help with your donations - CFA Breeder Assistance is a not for profit 501c3 and your donations are tax deductible (in the US).

Texas Animal Rights Activists Succeed in Lowering the Licensing Threshold for Cat and Dog Breeders

Animal rights activists began campaigning to reduce the licensing threshold of the ineffective Texas Dog and Cat Licensed Breeders Act after the Sunset Commission recommended eliminating the program in 2020. Failing in the 2021 legislative session, activists succeeded when Governor Abbott signed into law on May 29, 2023. Effective September 1, 2023, the licensing threshold will be reduced from 11 breeding females to "5 or more adult intact female animals and is engaged in the business of breeding those animals for direct or indirect sale or for exchange in return for consideration." It also eliminates the transaction threshold of not fewer than 20 transactions in a calendar year. Breeders have until January 1, 2024 to comply with the new requirements.

Legislators threw pedigreed cat breeders under the bus by refusing to provide a pedigreed cat breeder exemption comparable to the exemption added for people breeding dogs for conformation shows. The CFA Legislative Group worked with TICA to suggest similar exemption language for pedigreed cat fanciers. But bill authors Senators Flores and Whitmire, and authors of the identical House Bill 2238, Representatives Buckley, Patterson, and Lalani, ignored our requests for equity.

As a result, Texas cat breeders should review the amended law to determine if they would prefer licensing and meeting all the inspection, facility, and care requirements designed for large-scale breeders or adjusting their breeding programs for the new threshold. They should also review their public profile, such as websites, to ensure that it reflects their decision - just as they did when APHIS changed the federal pet dealer licensing exemption or for other changes, like retiring or changing cattery names.

Anthony Wayne Cat Fanciers hit a home run for region 4¡¯s first show of the season in Ann Arbor, MI. Their new show hall, located inside of Washtenaw Community College, is bright, carpeted, and has a floor to ceiling wall of windows featuring a breathtaking view of a pond with a fountain.

The show opened at 9am, and by noon nearly 500 people had come through to visit!?As in past years, Golden Triangle partnered with the Cambridge & District Humane Society to collect donations.?Spectators who brought a donation received a raffle ticket for a lovely gift basket.

Dugan from Camp Metallicat was also on hand for spectators to dote on and truly get up close and purrsonal with a pedigree feline.

Saturday evening's awards banquet went incredibly smoothly, ending just after 9:30. It was an evening of sparkles, smiles, and some tears.

The region recognized several individuals with special awards.

Clerk of the Year: Bob Belfatto for his years of giving to clubs, shows, and new clerks, and making show halls a fun?place to be.

Exhibitor of the Year: Donna Wilbanks. Since at leasts 2015, Donna has coordinated the region's awards sponsorships tirelessly and with a smile on her face, being that "unsung hero" to hundreds of our exhibitors.

Our Upcoming June Issue

The June issue of Cat Talk will be out in a few weeks. Its theme is "Groomed to PURR-fection." We've interviewed several professional cat groomers who gave us their perspectives not only about show grooming, but the importance of grooming ALL cats.

Good grooming isn't just for cats - we look at the dos and don'ts for people too. And just in time for the CFA Awards Banquet, readers share their banquet fashion faux pas (or when good outfits go bad). Oklahoma Updates on Bill of Rights and Breeder Reporting Bills

In Other News, North Dakota States Animals Are Not People?

Oklahoma proponents of the Dog and Cat Bill of Rights experienced the same disappointment as their California counterparts when the Rules Committee failed to vote out of committee ¨C or hold a vote on it. As reported in , the bill would have required all animal control, animal shelters, and rescue groups to conspicuously post a copy of the Dog and Cat Bill of Rights. These rights ranged from being free from cruelty to the right to mental stimulation, sterilization to prevent unwanted litters, and veterinary care. Although the session doesn't officially end until May 26, 2023, the bill has missed the Deadline to be considered by the House as a whole.?

Oklahoma to repeal the annual reporting requirements in ¡ì30.11 of the Commercial Pet Breeders Act were amended as emergency bills, changing the effective date from 11/1/2023 to when passed and approved. HB 2059 was passed and approved on 4/21/2023.?

North Dakota , declared an emergency measure in Section 2, amends the definition of person in ¡ì1-01-49(8) to exclude artificial intelligence, animals, inanimate objects, and environmental elements. A closer look was necessary to determine why "animals" would be in a bill defining "Person." In general, there are varying definitions of "person" in different legal contexts that include both humans and non-human legal entities, public and private. The actions list of HB 1361 reveals extensive amendment of the original bill that removed a section to be added, "Personhood" expressly stating individuals' rights are "superior and not equal to" listed non-human categories. However, the amended bill, now enacted law, only added an exclusion from the existing "person" definition, "The term does not include environmental elements, artificial intelligence, an animal, or an inanimate object." The show season came to a rousing end in the southwest region at the Las Vegas Cat Club's show on April 29-30. Elvis was in the building each morning to introduce the judges, who were all dressed according to the theme of their individual rings, based on a various landmark Las Vegas hotels. The show also featured the club's usual fantastic raffle table, as we celebrated the end of another show season.

There was also a bittersweet aspect to the show, as Ellyn Honey's distinguished judging career came to a close. Thanks for everything, Ellyn, and we're sure we'll see you down the road.

Region 6

Candilee Jackson, Regional Secretary

We had 2022~2023 third Regional show on April 22 in Tokyo. Fortunately, it was fine day and there were 175 entries. This was top number of entry as recent Regional show. We had three wonderful judges from America Larry Adkison, Russell Webb, Anne Mathis and Japanese judges Yukiko Hayata, Yaeko Takano and Wakako Nagayama.

The show hall was new and big.?Exhibitors and staffs needed to walk hardly. It was a very nice exercise ! At the corner of show hall, there was Chanan Photography.?Chanan took almost 100 cats in two days, on Saturday 64 cats at show hall on Sunday 30 cats at the rental photo studio.??Exhibitors were so happy since they have not had the chance to have photo sessions by Chanan for past over 6~ 7 years.?

There were new many exhibitors with beautiful cats. I suppose they will attend show in the next show season.??

I appreciate to all exhibitors, judges, clerks. stewards and also Richard and Nancy Katris. I appreciate your cooperation who came to photo session at the photo studio on Sunday again.

Region 9

The European show scene is already picking up for this current show season with clubs receiving return engagements for large pet fairs and new cooperative efforts with other major organizations.?With no shows scheduled for the past weekend in Region 9, all attention is focused on 13 May telecast of the Eurovision Song Contest finals (you have to see it to believe it).

We have the last scheduled regional awards banquet on 4-5 November in magical Bilbao, Spain.?The show is held in a large ballroom in the hotel and the banquet offerings include some of the best wines in Spain (or soft drinks if you are so inclined).?You are cordially invited to attend and enjoy our Spanish hospitality plus cheer on our celebration of our awards winners.

Fw: Show Sponsorship & Incentive Programs

April 27, 2023

?

MAD CATTERS (THE)

?

Dear Club Secretary,

?

You may be aware that CFA continues to offer sponsorship funds to CFA licensed shows. An application is submitted and the request is reviewed to ensure the show is eligible for the type of sponsorship requested.

?

A new sponsorship offering and an incentive for Miscellaneous/Provisional/AOV show entries are available for the 2023-2024 show season.

?

The INFREQUENT-REGION JUDGE sponsorship will help defray expenses for shows which contract with CFA judges not often seen in the show's region, the "Infrequent-Region Judge" supplement. With this new offering, there are now 5 different categories for possible sponsorship: Regular, In-Conjunction, Agility, Region 9 Airfare and Infrequent-Region Judge (IRJ).

?

IRJ funds are available to shows in all areas (except region 9 since they have a separate supplement for airfares) which contract with a judge (not associate or guest) who has not officiated in the show's region/ID in the prior 3 show seasons. The sponsorship amount is $500 per judge/per show, one per show. There are sponsorship funds available for two shows per region (1-8), the ID-China/Hong Kong/Macau and the ID (excluding China, Hong Kong and Macau) for a total of 20 IRJ sponsorships for the 2023-2024 show season.

?

A chart to assist you in determining which judges have/have not judged in the various areas is online for your convenience: . The application for sponsorships funds is available online also: .

?

All types of sponsorship may be requested by licensed shows. We are often asked "When are funds paid?" After the show is held and all required documents and fees have been received by the Central Office.

?

A rebate is available to show which discount MISCELLANEOUS/PROVISIONAL/AOV entries. The discounted entry fee must appear on the show¡¯s flyer provided to Central Office prior to the show. The cat(s) must be listed in the catalog with a registration number. The compensation will be up to $20 per entry based on the actual discount (e.g. if the discount is $15 off the regular entry fee, the club will only receive $15, if it is $25, the club will only receive $20). Central Office will contact the show secretary by email after the show to notify them of the amount of the rebate available to the club based on the information in the catalog and flyer. The show secretary will have 30 days to respond to the notice and claim the rebate. Clubs may decline the rebate. The cap for this program is $2,500 for the 2023-2024 season.

?

Please be sure the individuals in your club responsible for organizing shows are aware of these programs.

From the President

We are nearing the end of the 2022 ¨C 2023 show season. The last few shows of the season can be filled with both excitement and anxiety. Winning is formidable! Winning at all costs? Not so much. Winning has meaning when it is done with integrity and fair play. That being said, this can be somewhat of a bittersweet time as many cats will go onto their new careers. Some will go onto to have kittens that will leave their footprint with CFA, and some will retire to the life of leisure. I would like to think they all find that special place to live long and happy lives with people who love and cherish them.

This Year¡¯s Annual

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CFA JUDGE?

Now is a great time to consider becoming a judge. The Board and the Judging Program Committee have approved a number of changes in the rules that make them more flexible and attainable. There is now an option for those who do not want to breed, but love to exhibit. Please thoughtfully consider the CFA Judging Program as part of your future in CFA.

?

Here are some of the questions we are frequently asked:

1. How long must I have been active in CFA prior to applying??For the Breeder option, 5 years of active breeding, for the Exhibitor option 7 years of active exhibiting.

2. Do I have to be a licensed clerk??YES, with Master clerk preferred. However, if you are a clerk and do not want to be a master clerk, you can test out of that requirement.

3. Do I have to belong to a club??YES, and you must be active in the club.

4. When can I apply for a Judge Mentor??When you have been breeding a minimum of 3 years or exhibiting a minimum of 5 years. Since there is a limit on the number of applicants a judge can mentor, we want to provide quality oversight, yet not tie up judges for years with one applicant.

5. What can I be doing to ensure I am on the right track while waiting to be paired with a mentor?

a. Join a CFA club and become active in show production.

b. Become known in your breed, and show excellent examples of the breed.?Work on attaining the required number of Grand Champions or Grand Premiers.

c. Attend a Clerking school and become a licensed clerk.

6. Where can I get answers to my questions??The application administrator or any member of the Judging Program Committee will be happy to answer questions.

7. Do I need to attend a BAOS (Breed Awareness and Orientation School)? YES, but there is a time limit, it must be within 2 years of submission of your complete application.

CFA Judges Association

Barbara Jaeger - Secretary

Every year, there are members of the CFA Judging program who truly go the "extra mile". CFA's Judges Association has developed an award to recognize those members with a special thank you.?The Judges Association is now taking nominations for the 2023 Spotlight Award. Please tell why you think your nomination should receive the award.

If you know of a Judge who has performed "above and beyond" in support of CFA, the cat fancy or cats in general, this is your opportunity to nominate them for the Judges Association Spot Light Award.?Any Judge with Approved or Approval pending status is eligible.?The nomination should be made based upon contributions or achievements while actively judging.??

The following examples are some (but by no means all) of the type of service and contributions that can be considered:

- Public speaking as an ambassador of the cat fancy (i.e.., "speaks to U of Penn feline vet school about CFA breeds")

- Serves as a mentor for new judges by accepting trainee judges at shows, serving on past judge training programs or committees, presenting at breed awareness workshops or judges workshops, development of training materials for judges.

- Serves to mentor and encourages new and existing exhibitors through activities such as participation in clerking or newbie exhibitor programs, coordination of grooming classes.

- Participates in local "grass-roots" animal welfare efforts in the community such as service to local agencies, works with local purebred rescue in breed identification, does educational programs at local schools or any activity which benefits cats or domestic animals in general."

Please submit any nominees by May 25, 2023 to Barbara Jaeger, CFA JA Secretary, Barbara.jaeger911@... or mail to 14805 S 25th Way, Phoenix, AZ?85048 and please contact me if you have ay questions.

Preparing Your Cat For a Successful Show

Wendy Heidt

Everyone loves to watch a cat enjoy themselves on the judge¡¯s table. They command attention as they strike a pose, much like a super model on the runway.

As exhibitors and breeders, you can help your cats to achieve success.

Show rules 11.17 through 11.19 all discuss handling in the ring. Rule 11.19 d is ¡°The decision of the judge whether or not a cat is behaving in a recalcitrant or threatening manner is final and shall not be questioned.¡±??

Preparing your cat for this handling is important to set them up for success. No judge likes to disqualify cats for behavior.

Do you take them out of the cages the way the judges do? Observe how the judges remove the cats from the cages. Cats should face the back of the cage and relax into the judges¡¯ hands to leave the cage backwards. Do you handle your cats at home the way the judges do? Place your hands on the sides of their heads and feel for the jawbone and along the profile. Ruffle the coat backwards. Feel from the base of the tail all the way to the tip.??

Preparing them for the experience on the table and desensitizing them to the examination procedures will help them to be less stressful and more likely to show their inner beauty as they captivate the judge and the crowd

Cat Talk's Annual

Kitten Issue is Out!

Our annual "Kitten Issue" comes 65 days after our breeding issue. This year we've focused on socializing kittens (for home AND show), finding the perfect home for those kittens, a little girl who has managed to survive (and thrive) with a cleft palate, vaccines and schedules for kittens, and dealing with colibacillosis in kittens. And that's just the kitten section! We also went "Up Close and PURR-sonal" with Dee Johnson and Connie Roberts, and looked at the ins and outs of feline digestion. (and there are still MORE articles!) The Cat Talk staff worked overtime on this issue and we hope everyone enjoyed it and learned something.

We've already got the June issue in production - so DO make certain that your subscription is up to date. (remember: you'll receive a notice when your subscription is beginning to lapse).

CFA Annual Fashion Faux Paws

Every big event has underlying stories that may or may not have gone unnoticed. For example: we¡¯re sure that attendees are already thinking about what to wear to this gala event. But what happens when the best-sewn plans of banquet attendees go awry?

  • ??Lost a dress when that bag went missing and had to improvise?
  • ??Come close to having a ¡°wardrobe malfunction¡± just as you¡¯re about to walk onstage?
  • ??Forgot a very important piece of your outfit ¨C now what?

WE WANT TO KNOW!

For the June issue of Cat Talk, we¡¯re doing a feature on awards banquet faux-pas and we want YOUR story! (and high res photos should you happen to have one). Please send your stories to Candilee Jackson at pawdancercattery@...

Update on Texas Breeder Licensing Threshold Reduction Bills

In March, both houses of the Texas Legislature considered identical bills that would lower the state licensing threshold for cat and dog breeders. Initially left pending in committee, and . Both committees have now voted favorably on the bills with one minor amendment for dog conformation breeders. A floor vote is the next step.

For the committee hearings, Texans commenting on both bills found they had to navigate different processes. The Texas Senate still embraces the old, familiar method of using an email form to contact individual legislators rather than the committee. But committee members often limit emails to district constituents, thus missing out on vital feedback. People can submit written testimony in person if they cannot speak at the hearing.?

Committees in the House, however, can take advantage of an app that makes it easy for constituents to comment on a bill scheduled for a public hearing. People wanting to comment must affirm state residency to use the House Public Comment portal. The 100 comments on HB 2238 were submitted to the committee and then posted on the bill web page after the hearing. This process lends itself to quick, informal statements, but savvy advocates will still include a position statement at the beginning of their comment and avoid any ambiguity. Failing to do so requires the legislative staff to interpret - or misinterpret - the commenter's position when making their tally!

The Texas House is not alone in embracing changes in the digital age. California and Washington are among those making it easier for constituents to voice their opinions to legislative committees. Some legislative bodies make it easier to contact one's legislator, but not committees where a lot of important work is done.?

The duplicate bill, , was assigned to the same committee as HB 2238 but has not been scheduled for a hearing yet.

McKenzie River Cat Club is back in Eugene, OR. The club held their show on March 18th and 19th and it was a roaring success. The entry was good and the gate was enormous! Look forward to their 2024 show

The Puget Sound/Mountain Mist Cat Clubs just finished their two day 10 ring show in Longview, WA. A few problems but all in all a really nice show. Our Regional Director, Pam Moser, stepped up to the plate to replace a judge that became ill. This caused a bit of rearranging but we got it done.

On Sunday, the club had prizes in the rings. Neil Quigley got the kittens and the prizes were Easter Eggs with money inside. Neil put the eggs in with the kittens. Even though it was late in the day, the kittens had a ball. Eggs were bouncing all over the show cages. Yeah, the show manager, me, just too tired to take a picture or two.

We do have pictures of some of the contestants in the Easter Bonnet contest.

Mid-Ohio Cat Fanciers ¨C April 1-2, 2023

We traveled from far and wide...family from north, south, east and mid-west made the trek in wind and rain to Mansfield, OH for the Mid-Ohio Cat Fanciers April Fools¡¯ Day show. Things were going great! By 11:30am premiership had been judged in two rings. Household Pets had already completed a final. And both LH and SH Specialty kitten finals had already been completed in another ring. Then the lights flickered...and then POOF! It was dark. Cell phones became flashlights, and those who prepare for the worst went out to their vehicles to collect their batter powered camping lanterns. At that time, there was no ETA for when power would be restored.

So we held a GLR Regional Meeting by lantern light. (above) And we sat...till 5pm. We huddled with our friends trying to stay warm as the temp continued to drop in the building. (above right) Some took naps. Some snuck back to the hotels where there was power, hoping their friends would call them with good news that the lights were back on. And our esteemed board members present, Melanie Morgan, John Colilla and Kathy Calhoun, spent the afternoon making phone calls to figure out what the plan of attack would be. And at 5pm...we left.

We enjoyed dinner with our friends while we still awaited word about the electricity. 5am Sunday rolled around, and we all received the unfortunate email...there was still no power and the ETA for restoration was Tuesday afternoon. The show unfortunately could not go on.?

But we are the Great Lakes Region ¨C and one of the things that makes us GREAT is how we pull together to make the best of any given situation. Many of us reminisce days past when there was time in the show hall to socialize with friends, and not racing around the show hall. We all got that opportunity to spend quality time together that day...even if it was, in the dark.?

Just Cat-In Around Cat Fanciers?- April 8-9, 2023

Here comes Peter Cottontail...Hoppin¡¯ down the bunny...WHAT? Bunny? No no NO! That can¡¯t be! We have cats! But on Easter weekend while most people were hoping the Easter Bunny would bring them baskets full of goodies...a group of us were in Bowling Green, OH hoping the judges would bless our kitties with full rosettes from the club! And we were Hangin¡¯ With Our Peeps! While we were all in show mode, there was plenty of smiles, laughter and socializing in the show hall!?

The CFA family was greeted in the morning with the gift of an Easter Egg with a surprise inside! Many found small cat toys, but a few fortunate people found MONEY!

We were also given a paper cut out egg which was used for the Spectator¡¯s Choice Award! (above) Spectators were given a sticker and were asked to place on the egg of the cat they liked best. It was a great way to get the spectators involved and get both spectators and exhibitors talking with each other! The judging rings were decorated with various Easter d¨¦cor, including the latest stuffed animal craze SQUISHMALLOWS!?

Show manager Sabrina Greiser was instrumental in coordinating box lunches to be delivered each day for those who ordered ahead and word in the show hall was they were AMAZING!?

No one enjoys spending any holiday away from their family...but Just Cat-In Around made spending the Easter holiday in the show hall a blast. And despite the Easter weekend and unseasonably warm weather, the spectators came out both days for the show! It was definitely a lovely way to spend the weekend away from home!?

?Los Colores Cat Club held their traditional "Country Fair" show in Palm Springs on March 25. Besides the wonderful cats and judging lineup, the highlight of the show was a surprise celebration for longtime club member Jennifer Reding, as this show was her first domestic allbreed judging assignment!

?As the show season winds down, good luck to all in achieving your goals, whatever they may be.?

Led by Show Managers Jennie Batten and Jessica Franz, Mo-Kan Cat Club hosted a one-day show on March 11th in a new and larger show hall at the City Center Fitness, in Lenexa, Kansas.?Using the theme, ¡°Spring Fling,¡± the show featured the very popular cat costume contest, and provided free CFA coloring books for all children in attendance. Made and donated by Jean Ingram of Summit Pet Services, a gorgeous quilt was the center piece of the show¡¯s raffle.

It was certainly NOT April Fools Day in Waukeshau, Wisconsin, where Cats of Wisconsin (COWs) held their second ¡°Moo-au¡± (luau for the uneducated!) on April 1st.?This clever and fun club goes out of its way to celebrate COWs including cash drawings from the Milk Pail:?Lori Alexander and Lisa Morgan each pulled a $100 bill from the bucket!?Show manager, Bobbie Weirauch reported ¡°the gate was fantastic, almost 1.5 times larger than last year ¡ Thank you, Mike Altshul!¡±?Among the show goings-on, there were at least four new grands, and seven new exhibitors, five of whom had purebred cats.?They were given New Exhibitor badges so they could be easily identified if help was needed. Judge Annette Wilson congratulated the show¡¯s club members for their dedicated work which resulted in ¡°smiles and energy. The influx of spectators started right at 9am and continued throughout the day ¡ the place was packed with folks interested in the cats, the process and the great variety of vendors.¡±?WELL DONE, COWs!
