From the President

June is a good time of year to reflect on new goals and plans for the new show season. One reminder for all exhibitors is to review the Code of Ethics for CFA Cat Show Exhibitors.?This can be found on the CFA website under the Breeding and Exhibiting tab, and also ?Thank you to the Special Investigations Committee for creating the Code of Ethics and to the CFA Board of Directors for endorsing.?The Code of Ethics outlines four specific standards and a list of criteria that will encourage exhibitors to think about ways in which they may improve the cat fancy experience.?

June is also a great time of year for celebrating last year¡¯s achievements. The Regions and the International Division are holding and or planning celebrations for the accomplishments of the 2022-2023 season and scheduling new shows for the 2023-2024 season.??

The June Issue of Cat Talk is Out!

We hope that you're enjoying reading the June issue of Cat Talk which came out last week. I know that we loved learning about some of the "fashion misadventures" at previous Annual banquets. And of course, Patrick's encounter with the "demons" in his backyard made us smile.

We have also been receiving great submissions about how breeders determined their cattery names - thank you! Remember, you can send Nancy Kerr YOUR story to share with our readers.

Texas Animal Rights Activists Succeed in Lowering the Licensing Threshold for Cat and Dog Breeders

Animal rights activists began campaigning to reduce the licensing threshold of the ineffective Texas Dog and Cat Licensed Breeders Act after the Sunset Commission recommended eliminating the program in 2020. Failing in the 2021 legislative session, activists succeeded when Governor Abbott signed into law on May 29, 2023. Effective September 1, 2023, the licensing threshold will be reduced from 11 breeding females to "5 or more adult intact female animals and is engaged in the business of breeding those animals for direct or indirect sale or for exchange in return for consideration." It also eliminates the transaction threshold of not fewer than 20 transactions in a calendar year. Breeders have until January 1, 2024 to comply with the new requirements.

Legislators threw pedigreed cat breeders under the bus by refusing to provide a pedigreed cat breeder exemption comparable to the exemption added for people breeding dogs for conformation shows. The CFA Legislative Group worked with TICA to suggest similar exemption language for pedigreed cat fanciers. But bill authors Senators Flores and Whitmire, and authors of the identical House Bill 2238, Representatives Buckley, Patterson, and Lalani, ignored our requests for equity.

As a result, Texas cat breeders should review the amended law to determine if they would prefer licensing and meeting all the inspection, facility, and care requirements designed for large-scale breeders or adjusting their breeding programs for the new threshold. They should also review their public profile, such as websites, to ensure that it reflects their decision - just as they did when APHIS changed the federal pet dealer licensing exemption or for other changes, like retiring or changing cattery names.

Tax Tips with George Eigenhauser

It¡¯s not too soon to begin thinking about your income taxes for this year.?Don¡¯t wait until the end of the year to document your contributions, expenses, donations, and other deductions.?Keeping organized throughout the year may not only make tax time less stressful but it can help you avoid overpayment.?For example, one-time charitable donations early in the year may be forgotten by tax time.?Records may be lost, and memories may fade over time.?You may be able to deduct your charitable donations but only if you document and claim them.?Don¡¯t forget, if you receive anything of value in exchange for your charitable contribution it may reduce the amount you may deduct on your taxes.?If you are given ¡°swag¡± in exchange for your donation, such as a T-shirt, tote bag, or other goods and services, then your deduction is limited to the amount your donation exceeds the value of the merchandise or services you received.?Keep track as you go and hold onto your receipts to maximize your deduction later.

Written by Wendy Goldman

Anthony Wayne Cat Fanciers hit a home run for region 4¡¯s first show of the season in Ann Arbor, MI. Their new show hall, located inside of Washtenaw Community College, is bright, carpeted, and has a floor to ceiling wall of windows featuring a breathtaking view of a pond with a fountain.

Camaraderie was displayed throughout the day by exhibitors with many congratulations to each other for their achievements on the previous season. Plus, a remarkable number of cats granded which added to the excitement.

Bravo to the club and its members for a fabulous start to the season!

Golden Triangle Cat Club?- May 27, 2023

Written by Wendy Goldman

Golden Triangle Cat Club hosted their annual show after a 3 year hiatus due to COVID in Cambridge, Ontario CANADA. As Golden Triangle is the ONLY CFA show producing club in Canada, there was much to celebrate!?It was great to see many US family members make the trip over to Canada, coming as far as Florida for the show!?There were also a number of newer to CFA exhibitors at the show!

The show opened at 9am, and by noon nearly 500 people had come through to visit!?As in past years, Golden Triangle partnered with the Cambridge & District Humane Society to collect donations.?Spectators who brought a donation received a raffle ticket for a lovely gift basket.

Dugan from Camp Metallicat was also on hand for spectators to dote on and truly get up close and purrsonal with a pedigree feline.

It was great to have CFA back in Canada, and Golden Triangle thanks everyone who came to support the show!

Memorial Day weekend saw the Superstition Cat Fanciers putting on their annual show at the Shrine Auditorium in Phoenix. In addition to their usual great raffle, the show had a great spectator turnout, in large part due to the publicity from All About Animals rescue. The rescue also found forever homes for 27 cats in a single day!?

The Southwest region has a break in upcoming shows, as we prepare for the upcoming CFA Annual. We hope to see you all in Tucson!

Region 7

Kenny Currle - Regional?Director

The region held its awards show and banquet in Roanoke, VA this past weekend and it was a spectacular event. Both events had the theme "Champagne and Roses" and Noralyn Heisig (along with her team) created beautiful decorations for both events.

Engaged visitors filled the show hall both days of the show, and some even came both days!?

Saturday evening's awards banquet went incredibly smoothly, ending just after 9:30. It was an evening of sparkles, smiles, and some tears.

The region recognized several individuals with special awards.

Clerk of the Year: Bob Belfatto for his years of giving to clubs, shows, and new clerks, and making show halls a fun?place to be.

Exhibitor of the Year: Donna Wilbanks. Since at leasts 2015, Donna has coordinated the region's awards sponsorships tirelessly and with a smile on her face, being that "unsung hero" to hundreds of our exhibitors.

Junior Fancier Achievement Award: Wesley Vaughn, a second-generation breeder/exhibitor continuing on an award-winning breed program.

Kudos to the teams that made these events such a success!

We had two shows on May. The first show of new show season was Delight Cat Fanciers show in Tokyo on May 20. They had pretty good entries.?

Takarazuka Cat Fanciers had show on May 28 in Kobe with pretty good entries.?In the both of show, Norwegian Forest Cat in championship and American Shorthair in Kitten Class made a good start. There were new cats and all of them were so nice.I hope they will all reach their goals at the end of show season.

I had no pictures of these two shows. So I attached beautiful picture of Japanese Iris in the garden of Heian Shrine. Japanese Iris is well known as a flower of May and June.
