Ring Theme: Shenanigans Under the Pale Moon
The Cotton States Cat Club welcomed 256 cats and their owners to their 81st Annual CFA Championship and Household Pet Cat Show November 2 & 3 at the Infinite Energy Center Forum in Duluth, GA. As a result of all these entries, they were able to present Top 15 awards in all four categories. The show's "Fifty Shades of Blue" theme was interpreted in each of the 8 rings in various ways with lights, sparkle, and bling. Thanks to a generous friend of the club, hundreds of stuffed blue bears throughout the show hall made their ways into ring decor and prizes.

While the beauty pageant took center stage at the show, exhibitors and spectators were able to speak with special guests, Dr. Will Draper and Dr. Fran Tyler, from The Village Vets and NatGeo Wild shows "Love & Vets" and "Animal ER Live".
Cotton States always invites several local rescue groups to participate by bringing some of their adoptable cats and kittens. This year four rescues were represented including Furkids, Fancy Felines Rescue of the South, Cat Rangers, and Good Mews. Many of the rescue cats were entered in the household pet competition and went home with rosettes. Several adoptions were closed at the show and many applications were received. Another rescue group, Rock Cats Rescue, featuring The Amazing Acro Cats, appeared at the show and provided clicker training demonstrations.

Memo From Mark
I spent Thanksgiving in the air, flying to Shanghai, China.?I went to meet with a number of government officials to discuss CFA cat shows in China in hopes of helping to return CFA shows to China.?As you probably know, this past year has presented us some challenges.?That weekend I attended a well-run show which encountered no government issues.?It was a 6x6 with 12 CFA judges. The show was sponsored by the Shanghai Hong Kou Commercial Federation.?CFA¡¯s China Rep, Allen Shi, worked closely with the local government to make sure the show had all the proper paperwork. Sindy and Peter did a great job managing the show.?Our other ID Rep, Matthew Wong, was in attendance and provided support for my meetings with the local officials.?The entire team is to be congratulated.?
The many loyal exhibitors who attended this show were thrilled to see the return of CFA shows. The following weekend the same management team produced another show without any problems. We hope we are working our way back to a full show schedule in China.?The success of these two China shows has encouraged a number of others to seek help in producing more shows this season. I was delighted to be able to attend the first of these shows and am appreciative for the great hospitality extended to me while I was there.
Our Development Director, Jo Ann Miksa-Blackwell, coordinated a large CFA booth at a Pet Expo in Pittsburgh the weekend of November 16-17.?There was a huge gate and CFA received wonderful exposure.?A number of CFA staff members worked the booth that weekend: Allene Tartaglia, Desiree Bobby, and Amber Goodright.?Jim Flanik was also a big help in the booth all weekend.?The Great Lakes Region held a show in conjunction with this Expo.?Thanks to Regional Director John Colilla and his team for pitching in and producing a well-run show that the many visitors to the Expo were able to visit and enjoy.?The next Pet Expo with a CFA booth will be in Edison, New Jersey in early February. Members of the Garden State Cat Club will staff the booth along with Jo Ann Miksa-Blackwell. CFA will be providing displays and handouts while the club is bringing along some Pet Me Cats for the enjoyment of the visitors.?These large events help educate the pet loving public about our hobby and our many exciting breeds.?We also explain the many ways they can participate in CFA.

The Ambassador Cat Program, co-chaired by Karen Lane and Joel Chaney, has once again coordinated a CFA calendar.?We handed out thousands of them at the recent CFA International Cat Show as well as at the Pittsburgh Pet Expo.?We also made them available to our show-producing clubs from November and into January.?If you attended a CFA show, you should have received one.?Teresa Keiger did a great job with the design of these calendars.?I hope you got one.

The Board of Directors met on Tuesday, December 10th.?Hopefully, you read from that meeting.?Treasurer Kathy Calhoun reported that we have had a very successful year financially. Our core business is registrations and once again we saw increases this year over last year.?We have invested heavily in marketing and in IT.?It has been a very successful year and I thank each of you who have participated in our wonderful hobby.?
The holiday season is upon us.?I hope each of you enjoy the holidays and I wish you the best in the New Year.

Meet the Central Office Staff
Brian Buetel
Geri Fellerman

One of Central Office¡¯s early employees when moving to Alliance was Brian, who joined the group in January of 2011. He was originally brought on to be the renovation coordinator of the building.?His duties included demolition/finish work, getting bids and coordinating with contractors and CFA. Lots to be done as quickly as possible. His stellar work on the project led to his being hired on a full-time basis as building maintenance supervisor. His general duties included all building repairs, janitorial, snow removal, mail, shipping and receiving special items needed for shows, and many, many, other items that crop up on a daily basis. Brian is truly a jack of all trades and master of many.

Another happy employee, Brian particularly enjoys his co-workers and the ability to make choices on his own. While everyone has work days where some aggravation sets in, all-in-all Brian is very happy working for CFA.

Prior to joining CFA, Brian worked in the automotive field and managed an automotive parts store for fifteen years, after which he went into building repairs for a company that managed four builds with over 550 units. He also had a small locksmith and maintenance company before coming onboard with CFA.

Home life for Brian includes his lovely wife, Patti, and together they have five adult sons, four grandsons and two granddaughters who keep them busy.?On the pet front, Brian and Patti have three dogs (one a paraplegic) and two rescue kitties. Heavily involved with the Boy Scouts of America for the last 45 years, Brian takes great pleasure in working with the youths.?His other hobbies include working around their four acre ¡°little hobby farm¡± and working on antique farm and garden tractors.

You will find Brian at the International Shows where he is in charge of coordinating all of the supplies along with set-up and several other duties associated with the show. While he is also in charge of coordinating and getting supplies to and from the Annuals, he has yet to attend one, although it is definitely on his bucket list.

The Pittsburgh Pet Expo, held on November 15-17, featured the CFA Booth and the Great Lakes Region Cat Show. Exhibitors new to Pittsburgh were surprised to find such a beautiful, easy to navigate city with an amazing skyline. Convention center parking was nearby and reasonably priced. Special thanks to Great Lakes Regional Director John Colilla for managing the details of the cat show, and to all the volunteers who made this cat show and event possible.?
As spectators arrived at the CFA booth area, they were welcomed by staff members Allene Tartaglia, Amber Goodright, Desiree Bobby, and Jo Ann Miksa-Blackwell. Jim Flanik also assisted in welcoming the pubic and managed the process of keeping other animals out of the cat show area.?

The CFA story was told through engaging conversations, amazing signage, promotional materials, calendars, coloring books, brochures, and interactive activities. The Pet Me Cats were very busy throughout the expo, and spectators patiently waited in lines to pet the cats. After spectators learned about CFA, they moved toward the Feline Agility Ring and the cat show. Special thanks to Jill Archibald and Niki Faniak for bringing CFA Feline Agility to the Pittsburgh Pet Expo.?

Everyone had on a happy face as they departed the CFA cat show and booth area and headed back to dog-kingdom. There were many positive comments, including from John Colilla, who said, ¡°I feel it was a great success, and the exhibitors seemed to have a wonderful time.?A lot was learned from this experience and several ideas were bounced around on how to make improvements for next year. I enjoyed hosting this event and the chance to showcase CFA and all it has to offer.¡±

And from Mary Kolencik, who said, ¡°The show this past weekend in Pittsburgh in conjunction with the Pet Expo was terrific! It was very well run, I noticed no glitches, and I had zero problems getting to the show hall. This was a show to benefit the Great Lakes Region and to promote CFA to a large metropolitan audience, and it was totally enjoyable. I loved all of the shopping, and I have to say that the bargain that I got on the freeze-dried raw kibble paid for the parking!¡±
While barking could be heard at the other end of the spacious Pet Expo, the cats did not seem to be bothered by it. Throughout the two-day cat show, exhibitors enjoyed the many animal activities, the yummy offerings at concession stands located right beside the cat show, and pet care shopping for unique products. But among the many firsts for CFA at the Pittsburgh Pet Expo, perhaps one of the most memorable was Jim Flanik asking the little horse to leave the CFA booth area.

Take a quick look at the expo

Happy New Year!

Legislation ¨C What¡¯s Hot . . . . . . .
?Kelly S. Crouch, CFA Legislative Information Liaison

As 2019 Draws to a Close, Stay Aware of Legislative Happenings

As the year draws to a close, remember to keep a watchful eye on legislative happenings. With most state legislatures out of session during the holiday season, it is hard not to be distracted by the glitz and glamour surrounding us. Yet while the more public legislative processes may lie dormant, other activities continue. Some states may already be accepting the pre-filing of bills in preparation for the next legislative session. There are also background efforts that often lead to bill creation. This is true even in states, such as Texas, where the legislature convenes only in odd-numbered years. For other states, sessions start as early as January 1, 2020, so these background activities may be gathering momentum now.

In addition to state legislative activities, state regulatory processes are in play year-round. Earlier this month, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship published the final changes to the state animal welfare rules. Under state law, a commercial breeder means ¡°a person, engaged in the business of breeding dogs or cats, who sells, exchanges, or leases dogs or cats in return for consideration, or who offers to do so, whether or not the animals are raised, trained, groomed, or boarded by the person. A person who owns or harbors three or fewer breeding males or females is not a commercial breeder. However, a person who breeds any number of breeding male or female greyhounds for the purposes of using them for pari-mutuel wagering at a racetrack as provided in Iowa Code chapter 99D shall be considered a commercial breeder irrespective of whether the person sells, leases, or exchanges the greyhounds for consideration or offers to do so.¡± Iowa cat fanciers meeting the definition of a commercial breeder can find more information .

Local lawmakers are generally busy year-round as well. Despite it being the legislatively quiet time of the year, the CFA Legislative Group has posted eight articles (and fielded more) relating to local ordinances on the CFA LegislativeNews Facebook page from November 11, 2019 to December 11, 2019. Represented locations are in Hawaii, Indiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Texas. Among the topics included in these proposed ordinances are pet limits, use of mandatory microchipping instead of city licenses, exercise requirements for pets, retail pet store sales bans, and a more general ban on the sale of animals.

Although legislative activities may be less frequent at this time of year, they are not nonexistent. Amidst the seasonal festivities, it pays to watch for legislative happenings impacting you. It is too easy for such things to go unnoticed during the holidays - potentially leading to unwelcome surprises in the new year.

2019 Cures4Cats Campaign
2019 Cures4Cats Campaign is underway and will run until December 31st, 2019.??

ABOUT:
Winn Feline Foundation kicked off the inaugural Cures4Cats Campaign October 21st, 2017. This annual day of awareness is dedicated to highlighting Winn-funded research, the critical need for evidence-based medicine,?early-stage biomedical research, and health answers involving cats.?

Each year since its inception, Cures4Cats focuses on a specific area to raise funds for feline health research, but also to bring awareness of signs and symptoms of each disease or condition for owners and bringing the veterinary community together for these efforts to help cats live longer, happier, and healthier lives.

Last year the Cures4Cats focus was chronic kidney disease (CKD) and Winn was able to reach the goal of raising $50,000. Winn then matched the funds for a total of $100,000 to go towards CKD research. With last year being only the second year, Winn was thrilled with the success.

2019 Focus:
The 2019 Cures4Cats campaign focus will be an extension of last year's campaign focus, chronic kidney disease (CKD). This year we will keep with the CKD focus, but with an emphasis in the area of feline hypertension.

Feline Hypertension is quite common in cats and can be seriously detrimental to a cat's health. It is the culprit for a variety of conditions relating to the kidneys, eyes, heart and could be indicative of other potentially fatal underlying systemic conditions. However, with timely detection due to regular monitoring and screening, most treatment plans are successful in managing hypertension.?

Winn Feline Foundation wants to increase awareness of the importance of routine monitoring and management of feline hypertension. Raising funds for further research will enable an even more hopeful future for all cats.

We just finished the 48th Annual Lewis & Clark LH SP Cat Club show in Portland, Oregon. As usual it was a well attended fun event. Lots of laughter and other good things. We celebrated Richard Katris¡¯s and Ann Segrest¡¯s birthdays with two huge cakes and lots of cards. It was Ann¡¯s 80th birthday and she requested that she spend a day at the show as means of celebration. Ann is a very successful retired Korat breeder and we have missed seeing her at the shows. Richard as you know is our show photographer better known as Chanan.

In January, we look forward to the Emerald Cat Club show in Seaside, OR on January 7 & 8. This is the 2nd show for the club in Seaside. It was lots of fun last year with a very neat offer from the Ebb-Tide Ocean Front Inn for exhibitors and their cats. Poppy State Cat Club is holding a one day show in Auburn, CA on Jan 18th. Both shows are listed on cfanorthwest.org under the show calendar.

Pam will hold a regional meeting at both of the January shows. She has some vital information so please try to attend.

Debbie Browne, one of our household pet exhibitors, just underwent surgery. Her husband, Morgan, reports that all went well. We all hope that Debbie in on her feet again soon. She is always helping the clubs with their raffles and set up. Let me know if you want to send a card and I will email you her address.
My daughter Deana thought that our use of a single rosette for each cat and plaques for their awards should be mentioned. With the rising cost of shows and especially rosettes, some of the clubs have copied the awards method from that other association. I first saw the plaques in No Cal at a Poppy State show. Linda Ahrens kindly sent me the template. Lewis and Clark had three different rosettes to choose for you cat. I have included some pictures from around the show hall.?
Cost is certainly an issue but I have noticed an added benefit! There are very few rosettes left laying around the show hall at the end of the day! When cleaning up, we used to have dozens of rosettes tossed here and there. Now, less than a dozen and this was an almost full show! Another point, we put the plaques in coin envelopes so that they are easy for judges to place with the cat.?
Happy holidays and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year from Region 2?

What a great show we had on December 7th in Orange, TX, by the Brazos Valley Cat Club. While there wasn¡¯t a high count, the quality was sure there, in all the categories.?
Judge Ellyn Honey hosted a costume contest at noon which got a lot of attention from the visitors and exhibitors. Every cage was filled with contestants (cats) dressed in various costumes. Every chair was full, and it was standing room only around the ring. Everyone had a great time. Ellyn Honey awarded the best costume to Patsy Tokoi¡¯s Oriental Shorthair - the Angel.
We had New Bees attending their first show, Leeann and Robert, with a Norwegian Forest Cat kitten. They were excited to make a final in Judge Kathy Black¡¯s ring. They have asked to be mentored and are planning their next show.
We were happy to have Ambassador Cats at the show. Children and adults really love petting them and finding out more about the breeds. Ambassador Cat Diablo loves to be petted and held by everyone.?
They also had a raffle which exceeded their goal of over $500. Interestingly, one-third of the tickets were purchased by the gate.?

The vendors were very happy with the gate. Twelve of the GSR fundraiser T-shirts were sold to the gate as well.

It was great to see they had four New Bees at the show, and a returning New Bee from the Gulf Shore Region fundraiser show from October was there, too. Show mentors helped each New Bee at the show.
BUY AN ANNUAL PIN! We are selling the 2021 Annual pins for $20. To purchase, see Traci Whittenberg or Beth Grant-Field. The pin design is a cat in space to represent our Houston Annual. They are very popular and everyone wants one!?

44 Gatti - Bologna
?
The American Cat Show in Bologna was back for its second edition in one of the biggest fair centers of Italy. The show attracted thousands of visitors. Italy is "longhair country" and so there were many gorgeous cats, primarilyl in Persians and Exotic divisions.
?
Cooperation between 44 Gatti and the Pet Expo Show created an incredible event with reptiles, fishes, birds and lots of pet animals. A big dog show was also included and of course, cats. This helped 44 Gatti Cat Club to give CFA more visibility in Italy with new breeders of different breeds.
Club Felino Espa?ol - Madrid
Club Felino Espa?ol held a show in Moraleja de Enmedio (Madrid area / Spain) on Nov/24&25/2019.?

114 cats entered for this show. First time in CFA Spain that we get 25 cats in the shorthairs!
?
In total the club had 61 Exhibitors (out of 10 exhibitors 4 were from other countries) 57 % from Spain and 43 % from other countries like Portugal, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Finland, Russia & Korea. This was also another first time in CFA Spain history that we have had so many exhibitors from outside the country.
?
Another superlative for this show season, a 10 ring show, the only show with this format in R9 for the season 2019/2020.?
11 Judges: 8 AB Judges (5 USA, 1 Hong Kong, 2 Belgium) + 1 SH guest from Belgium + 1 LH Spain (first assignment as CFA LH Judge) + 1 LH/SH Spain.
?
Lets talk about newbees, at least 7 newbies exhibitors with Exotic Shorthairs, Maine Coon, Persians, Bengals, Somalis, Sphynx cats. All these cats were entered with TRN numbers and the best they also asked for registration.
?
Wonderful atmosphere, warm welcome for everyone, attentions with everyone present (exhibitors, judges, clerks, sponsors ...). Exhibitors fell comfortable and were happy!?
Edelweiss Cat Club
Moscow region, Russia
?7th & 8th December 2019
After a long long time the power of the dark side is fading - at the horizon a new hope appears - noble white is rising to a new level of excellence.
With no fear of shadow-dark, the local noble white star Alla Ipatova developed a new international cat show with multiple cat organizations, from the first idea through rough economical conditions to a safe and stunning first event - the Winter Cat Show 2019 in Moscow - the real place for excellent quality cats of all associations.?
Strengths are essential, but without financial energy no target can be reached. Edelweiss Cat Club is very grateful for the named main sponsor Nestle Purina PetCare / Purina-ProPlan, and for the interdisciplinary team work between the leaders of the executive clubs of CFA, TICA, WCF, ICU and AFC. We all are proud to be the strong pillars of this first instance of Winter Cat Show in Moscow and look for a bright noble white future
Edelweiss Cat Club follows the theme 'act local - think regional - trust global' which leads us to two local Russian guest judges Nadeja Rumyantseva & Victoria Pohvalina with Regional judge support from Pam Delabar (Finnland) & Michael Schleissner (Germany) supplemented with Global experience from Russell Webb (U.S.A.) & Kit Fung (Hong Kong). These 6 cat judges together with the support of the clerking team and the fast acting exhibitors are the fantastic base to find within 2 days and many working hours the best quality cats of CFA.?
The true final part of an International Cat exhibition is the Best-of-Best cat presentation where selected judge members of all organizations defines the three overall 'Winter Cat Show' winners in the Kitten, Championship, and Premiership class. Under the great attention of visitors, exhibitors, club officials and sponsor delegates our two CFA judges Pam Delabar & Russell Webb were sitting in the front row when first a CFA cat won the award WCS-2019-Best-of-Best Kitten (calico female Persian - above right) and second a CFA cat won WCS-2019-Best-of-Best Adult (blue lynx point Siberian - above left) award. This two fantastic wins - these two fantastic awards of these two fabulous cats proves the quality attributes of CFA - proves the quality attributes of our CFA breeders - and that Winter Cat Show in Moscow is the place to be present!?

Edelweiss Cat club looks forward to see you again next year, please continue to 'act local - think regional - trust global', take care of animal welfare and enjoy the upcoming X-mas season.

Memo From Mark

Happy New Year to each of you.

This spring our clubs vote for CFA Officers and Regional Directors.?In order to be eligible to vote clubs must have paid their dues and submitted a membership list with club officers indicated and be received in the Central Office by February 3rd.?Deadline for declaring for any of the Board seats up for election is March 15th.?As of this writing both Darrell Newkirk and I have declared for President.?You can check out who has declared for any of the positions this year .?

As this is the first newsletter of the new decade, I want to briefly take a look back at some of the changes that have occurred in CFA in the past decade.?
  • We moved the Central Office from New Jersey to Ohio.?With that move we lost many of our dedicated staff and new staff was recruited and trained. This was a difficult transition and it had its bumps in the road.?I am pleased that after an absence of several years Allene Tartaglia returned to her previous role as Executive Director.?She has improved office operations with a smaller staff at lower cost.?Since her return registration staff have received basic genetic training and staff has also received customer service training.
  • Our yearly registrations have more than doubled and related to that our bottom line has increased by more than $2.5 million.?
  • We are providing financial assistance to all our shows.?Based on the end of the current year¡¯s requests and potential approvals we should exceed $500,000 since May 1, 2016?
  • We have invested a significant amount in improvements to our IT systems.?More than 90% of our registrations are done online and most of them are processed within a day or two.??
  • Our marketing efforts have been fantastic.?We have a great presence on social media.?Our clubs are receiving help advertising their shows in order to attract spectators.?We have started participating in events with large audiences such as pet expos and state fairs.?More and more pet lovers are hearing about CFA and our wonderful hobby.
  • The CFA International Cat Show has grown tremendously and attract more spectators than ever. The most recent show generated almost $100,000 in ticket sales.
  • CFA is growing internationally.?We have more shows and more registrations from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

These are but some of the growth CFA has experienced in the past decade.?We expect to continue to see changes, improvements, and growth in the years to come.

We¡¯ve got an app for that.

CFA¡¯s very own app, CFA CATS is finally here. This tool benefits both spectators and exhibitors, while promoting CFA, pedigreed breeds, and cat shows.

With over 60% of our CFA family using mobile devices, it makes great sense for us to have useful show info in the palm of our hands. Currently, the app provides easy access to the show guide, show rules, breed descriptions, standards and a general show calendar. There will be enhancements and possibly some fun interactive features in the future as well.

Spectators can easily access photos and information about all of CFA¡¯s recognized breeds, making it the perfect tool to find out more about the breeds that they see at shows. There¡¯s also a list of FAQs for spectators, explaining how cat shows operate. The show guide benefits both spectator and exhibitors, as it lists upcoming shows, locations, and judges.

Exhibitors will have ready access to both current CFA show rules and all breed standards. There¡¯s even a point calculator for determining both grand and national/regional points.

The app is available for both the iOS and Android systems as a free download in the Apple App Store and via Google Play. Simply search for ¡°CFA CATS¡± to find it.

Note: The current version of the app is 1.2 so if you have a previous version on your phone downloaded during testing, be sure to delete it and redownload.

CFA Judges' Association
The Care and Feeding of Judges
an ongoing series

?Wendy Heidt

Bustling exhibitors, clerks calling numbers over crackling PA, smells wafting from the concession stands with impatient lines, and folks chatting about what looks good for lunch. A judge leaves their ring and heads to the far side of the show hall where a door with a pink and blue sign beckon. An exhibitor follows. While taking care of one¡¯s personal business in the tiled palace, a conversation is started. ¡°I want to shake your hand.¡±?
While the story is funny, it actually happens. But when you have a question or a comment to talk to a judge about when and where is the best time? Judges are busy people but stalking them into the bathroom may not be the best option even if you have something good to say.?

Show Rule 11.10 A judge should not engage in unnecessary conversations with exhibitors while performing his/her duties. Judges are not required to discuss entries with exhibitors.?
One of the best questions I have heard and been asked was ¡°What can I do to make my cat better¡±. If you want to ask the question, be prepared for the answer. It may be nothing that you can fix. Each ring of each show is how the cats stack up against each other at that moment in time. The answer may not be what you want to hear. Snotty nose, dirty ears, poo on the hock, overlooked dingleberry, knotted fur, poor weight don¡¯t help the chances of an entry to be called back.?

If you decide you still want to ask the question it is recommended to check with the ring clerk to see when a good time to come back would be. Most likely at the end of the day, after the judge has completed judging. Even if you ask the judge is not required to give you an answer. If the approach is one out of education and polite conversation, you are most likely to get that in return.??

Legislation ¨C What¡¯s Hot . . . . . . .
?Kelly S. Crouch, CFA Legislative Information Liaison

Anticipating Future Legislation

If asked to predict what legislation will crop up in a given year, the CFA Legislative Group would have to respond that absent local knowledge only hindsight is 20/20. Through their advocacy efforts, local fanciers are better equipped to anticipate what legislation might arise in their area. A good relationship with legislators can translate into the foreknowledge of proposed legislation. Awareness of a lawmaker¡¯s position on issues is also good to have. Social media and news reports can be useful in discerning an elected representative¡¯s position and legislative priorities. Real events in the jurisdiction can also motivate legislative efforts, so news stories can also be helpful to anticipate a legislative response. Fanciers in tune with their districts are less likely to be caught by surprise though that still happens occasionally to seasoned advocates.?

There are some issues that fanciers should anticipate and be prepared to counter. Even if there are laws on the books, someone may seek to amend the law. Mandatory spay/neuter, breeder permits, limit laws, pet licensing, and mandatory microchipping are all that crop up fairly frequently. Often the proposed ordinances adopt a familiar theme. Sometimes the advocates of the proposed law get inventive.?A development in mandatory microchipping is the replacement of pet licensing with microchipping. Though not the first community to consider such a law, Honolulu, HI was the subject of the for their proposed ordinance. What makes the Honolulu article a good read for fanciers is that the proposed ordinance compounds the issues of mandatory microchipping with those of several additional mandates. These multiple mandates just create too many challenges for the city and its residents.?

Legislatively seasoned fanciers also know to watch for consumer protection, nuisance, and dangerous animal legislation. Any of these can impact fancier activities. Consumer protection provisions designed for commercial enterprises often increase the liability of a hobbyist. Some of these laws also impose the care and facility requirements typically found in breeder licensing laws on all breeders. Nuisance laws may penalize caterwauling or at-large cats. A cat who attacks the neighbor¡¯s dog or the neighborhood squirrel may be declared dangerous.

There are more recent legislative developments of which fanciers should also be aware. A few years ago, a movement began to stop the sale of commercially sourced dogs, cats, and sometimes rabbits in pet stores. This legislation still comes up frequently at both the state and local levels of government. Although the local ordinances are more likely to affect hobby breeders by placing mandates on all breeders or narrowly defining hobby breeder exemptions, fanciers should keep an eye on state versions as well.

Another issue that has been cropping up in recent years is the use of pejorative terms in legislation. Emotionally charged and frequently ill-defined terms like backyard breeder, puppy mill, kitten mill, and irresponsible pet owners have no place in legislation. Sometimes it is just bad form because the advocate does not realize how pejorative a term may be outside of their community. Often used simply to categorize activities, these terms are also used to create a new classification of offenses. Laws outline the behaviors that will not be tolerated by society. Generally, jurisdictions have laws on the books making offenses of acts failing to meet the minimum behavior expected for the care of animals. A few local jurisdictions have considered making another offense of being an irresponsible pet owner. One becomes an irresponsible pet owner by being guilty of committing one or more of other enumerated offenses. In essence, the pet owner is punished for committing the offenses for which they have already been penalized.

The CFA Legislative Group usually cannot predict what legislation will show up in a particular area. There are just too many towns, cities, counties, states and nations for us to keep track of by ourselves. This is why local advocates are critical. If the first time anyone hears of legislation is in a news article, then they are already in a reactive mode rather than a proactive one. If the proactive fancier watches and prepares for these types of legislation, they are in a pretty good position to take action if necessary. We are here to help if you need it.

We had a wonderful time at the second Emerald Cat Club Seaside show on January 4th and 5th. The weather was stormy and the sand was blowing but the remodeling on the Seaside convention center was completed and really lovely. The cat show was fun and the gate was terrific! I imagine the weather drove the spectators in but the club had done a really great job with the advertising. The monies from CFA for such efforts have really paid off for our clubs! Good work CFA!
?
Pam Moser held a regional meeting before the start of the show on Saturday. She discussed some of the current issues and also the Annual in Spokane, WA. We won¡¯t be having a regional fundraiser show this year but will hold one next year on the January Emerald Cat Show date. The hall was booked so Emerald will move their show to the second week in February for one year only. That is Super Bowl Sunday so the club will try to arrange a viewing room. The remodeling has state-of-the-art audio visual so it should be very possible.?
One of the highlights of the show was GP KCDancers Tiger Wood earned his Grand Premier of Distinction in Wain Harding¡¯s ring. Tiger Wood is 9/3 years old and was bred by Craig and Kathy Miller. Tiger is owned by Janet and Lori Hollister. (right)

On January 18th, Poppy State Cat Club will host a one day six ring show in Auburn, CA. This show is followed by the Seattle Cat Club/Valley Cat Fanciers six ring one day show in Longview, WA on February 1st. Happy New Year!!

It¡¯s show time. On Saturday, December 21st, Show and Tell Cat Club had their Holiday Happenings cat show in Mesquite, Texas. It was a show that everyone looked forward to attending. Not only were there great judges from all over the United States and the world, but the fabulous brunch/lunch potluck buffet was a feast everyone participated in and really enjoyed. They also had a fun gift exchange going on all day.?
There were prizes for best decorated cage and decorated person too which a New Bee (Julia and Cassie) won with their highly decorated cage and wearing their cute Christmas sweaters. The giant raffle was great, with many winners. There were many craft fair vendors with great ideas for holiday presents and goodies for our cats
Jan Rogers was able to donate money to CFA¡¯s Breeder Assistance Program/Breed Rescue Group (BAP-BRG) and to the local spay/neuter network. The on-site rescue group adopted 4 rescue cats at the show.

Show and Tell had lovely rosettes, which had a beautiful ornament on top of the glittered streamer. This was a very fun show and quite a success.
The prestigious 67th Annual Houston Cat Club Charity Cat Show, at George R. Brown Convention Center, was January 11th and 12th. There were many events going on throughout Saturday and Sunday besides the judging in eight rings. They had a spectator ring set up for special events for the spectators and exhibitors. In the ring, at specific times they had Meet the Breeds, discussion on ancient cat breeds, daily best cat costume contests, best dressed human (cat-related) contest, and stuffed animal contests.?
The show had elaborate face painting by two ladies dressed up as Disney characters. They also had a fantasy backdrop that was used by many for picture-taking.

They had Agility for both days, and the cats had really fast times. The agility ring was another huge hit for the spectators, who were amazed at what the cats could do.
The Youth Feline Education Program (CFA-YFEP) had the youth do a breed presentation of their cat in a ring. The youth were of various ages and all did a fantastic job presenting their cats and breeds to Judge Brian Pearson and the audience.
The club had a children¡¯s activity center set up which was popular. There were a few Ambassador cats at the show, which the gate loved since they were able to pet the cats and take lots of pictures of them. They had nine rescue groups, and the groups adopted out many cats. It was great that there were three New Bees at the show, and they really enjoyed their first show. There were returning New Bees at the show too. The raffle was a huge hit with many spectators participating in it.

In this new year of 2020, we all can have high hopes of new beginnings and a better life for all of us.?It seems that 2019 was just a dark cloud that hung over our heads and we are ready to see the sun again!?

In January The SWR has two of our big shows in the region: Crown City which was last weekend, and San Diego the weekend of the 25th.?Our weather in California for these two shows are better than just about everywhere else, so make plans on coming on out and being a part of the SWR!

Rhonda Avery is also putting on a clerking school on Friday, January 24th, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.?So for all of you who want to learn more, contact Rhonda Avery.

Don't forget, we have the?Malibu show the 8th of February in Glendale, CA.?Again, for those that wish to leave the snow and cold, the weather here is wonderful!?You can see all the SWR shows ?So, get out of the cold and visit sunny California and have a great show!
This last weekend we had only 3 show locations in the USA. There was less than 600 cats present at all of these shows combined, and there were double entries in each show, so the final count was less.??

What we need now is outreach and advertisement.?We need new spectators who come and see what we do and want to do it also.?I want to say we did just that at the Crown City Show, in Ontario, CA.??Lisa Kuta and Debi Gomez teamed up again and made it happen.?This was the best attended show at that location by spectators in years!?Most had not been to a cat show before.?There was a team helping with spectators at the door giving information on etiquette?and how to find out information.?The crowd was steady and continued both days.??

Social media and friendly people will be the vehicle we use to change the direction of the cat fancy.?We all have a hand in this process no matter who you are.?Thank you to everyone that made a helped to make a difference!
Emma is 8 years old. When Pop Pop and Nana said she could go to the cat show with them, she chose her outfit. PopPop and Nana have rescue cats
She is shown here holding Goat
Region 6
Mary Auth - Regional Director
The Midwest region hosted two shows in early January and is planning a third in St. Paul, MN in conjunction with Winter Carnival. This show is always fun ¨C huge gate and the crowing of King and Queen of the carnival cats.?As always, complete info is on the Midwest Region web site:

The Three Amigos celebrated a fun show with cat costume and human costume contests. While on the first eastern side of the region World Wide Feline Fanciers kept with their wrestling theme and slammed it to the matt with a record-breaking show in gate, raffle and entries.?I would encourage everybody to take a good look at the four-ring shows in Lawrenceburg Indiana for a chance to pick up some grand points. The next one is in July.
America¡¯s Junior Miss Agriculture stopped by the WWFF show to talk to people about careers in agriculture ¨C like animal husbandry
It was clean at the beginning of the show, but children at the WWFF show make beautiful art during the day
This was part of the human costume contest at the Three Amigos, Gardner KS show.
Still in the Christmas spirit, this fellow competed in the cat costume contest at the Three Amigos, Gardner KS show.?The fun returns to this venue in March.

After a break of about 2 years with no shows in this very historical area for our organisation, CFA is back. Not only back, let me say "back in stile". UK Cat Fanciers produced this show in the south of Germany in the beautiful capital city of the German, Munich in the state Bavaria. Close to the international airport.
Mary Auth in a Christmas mood
Ulrike Knueppel & Justine Meyer
Ulrike Knueppel and her fabulous team of club members and helpers took the risk and finally did great. For the first time they produced a one day 6 ring show. This was a real challenge because nobody was sure how it will work out and how many entries the club will have. Finally the club had 124 and was very satisfied. It was a show with only CFA judges and, of course, the club also supported one of our new CFA judges. Teo Vargas did a Longhair/Shorthair speciality ring and could go the the next step on his way to become a CFA allbreed judge.

Having the?show at the end of November made the motto very easy - Christmas, with a wonderful decoration done by Monja Hahn and her daughter Julia. Not only this, there was also a raffle prepared and believe it or not, all tickets were sold out. The raffle was very professional presented by Giulia Di Natale and Justin Meyer and "the lucky winner" was the club.
Very special thanks go to Romain Attard and Frederic Goedert for there help with cages, entry clerking, clerking, catalog printing and building up the show hall, without you this first show wouldn't be possible. Once again we can see, that working together should be the new spirit in Europe.
?
Last but not least, we don't want to forget to say thank you to our two master clerks Natalia and Reto Gfeller from Switzerland, not only for doing a great job with keeping the files, also for making a time schedule which didn't produce conflicts.

Groups.io information regarding responding to group messages

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to give you an update on how groups.io differs from yahoo groups just in case you did not already have this information.

When responding to a post, if you only want to respond to the sender, you need to scroll to the bottom of the message example below:
_._,_._,_

Links:
You receive all messages sent to this group.
____________________________________________________________________________________

You simply click on "Reply to Sender" and your response will not go to the group but simply to the sender of the message.

This differs from yahoo groups where you could hit "reply all" and then delete the group email address leaving the message senders address.

If you want to respond to the entire group you simply hit Reply as normal when responding to a message.

Hope this helps!

Linda

Hi,
I am sending this to the Presidents and Secretaries of CFA¡¯s clubs to ask your club to vote for my re-election as CFA President.? I have served as President since 2014 and during that period we have experienced tremendous success.? Registrations are our core business. In 2019 we registered twice as many cats as we did the year prior to my election.? We have improved CFA¡¯s bottom line, expanded our support to your shows, made dramatic improvements in our computer system, brought back a previous successful Executive Director, hired new staff to focus on Marketing and Development, made significant improvements to the CFA International Cat Show, and so much more. Now is not the time to change CFA¡¯s leadership.? I am passionate about CFA and want to continue my work to see that CFA continues to grow and is around for decades to come.
My flyer is available at:
?
My flyer is, of necessity, brief.? I have created a Blog which provides much more detail regarding my History, Accomplishments, and Future Plans.? Please take a few minutes to read it.? I also invite you to email me with questions and comments.? I will publish many of them along with my response on the Blog.

?
Please share this email with your fellow club members.? I hope I have your support.? Thank you.

NEWSLETTER
Could it be that spring is just around the corner here in the Southern Region? Or is Mother Nature just playing tricks on us with trees and flowers blooming in February? Either way there's lots going on in our region these days!
The Regional Awards Banquet & Show is Approaching!

The regional banquet committee is finalizing details for dinner, duplicate awards, and sponsorships. That info will begin posting in the "Southern Stars" section of the as it becomes available. Remember, this year the show and the banquet are at the same facility, the Lexington Hotel and Conference Center in Jacksonville, FL, with The Cat Club of the Palm Beaches producing the show on June 13-14.

Looking For Volunteers
The committee is always looking for volunteers to help with this regional event. Currently, we need one or two more people with good proofreading (no writing) skills to help assist the quality control team. We always need help to set up the banquet hall, so please think of that as you're making your travel plans. Want to help? Please contact Teresa Keiger.

Looking For Stars
It's also time to begin thinking about our OTHER regional awards - the ones for outstanding regional folks. We are now taking nominations for:
  • Clerk of the Year
  • Exhibitor of the Year
  • New Exhibitor of the Year
Have someone you would like to nominate? Please email Teresa Keiger your nominations, and she will present them to the awards committee.

It's Never Too Early to Submit Photos? ?

The photo collection team would like to remind everyone that it's never too early to start preparations for our Regional Awards banquet! And with that, they're ready to begin accepting photos. Have you granded a cat? Earned a DM or Grand of Distinction title? Then they're going to need your photo in June. Avoid the end of season rush and?send it in now!

Speaking of Banquets

Because it's never too early to plan for a banquet, the region is already making plans for our awards banquets and shows for 2021 and 2022!

Four clubs in the Atlanta area are joining forces to produce the 2021 banquet in the Atlanta area on June 12-13.

Then for 2022, Deb Curtis is scouting for locations in the northern portion of the region for the weekend of June 11-12.

Fundraising

Have you heard about the ACE raffles that have been happening at various shows in the region? It's a variation of the traditional 50/50 raffle, and based on "all cats entered" (ACE). Exhibitors are first given the opportunity to purchase their on their own cats' numbers, then the raffle is opened up so that exhibitors can purchase ANY cat's number.? Now, how bad would it be to have someone else win a split of the pot on? YOUR number? You win, the region wins, and we all have fun!
We Want YOU? (and your ideas too!)

The Southern Region is always seeking new ideas for fundraising and other regional projects. And where do some of our best ideas come from? Folks in the region, of course!

Got a new idea for raising funds for our upcoming regional events (and an annual in the future)? Email fundraising coordinator Jacqui Bennett with your suggestions. Remember - we can always ask for funds/donations from populations outside of the cat fancy as well as our exhibitor base.

Then the region always needs folks to get involved in some capacity. It might be working on the awards banquet, helping with coordination of a regional project. Got a special talent and want to contribute?? Then WE WANT YOU!

Email regional director Kenny Currle or regional secretary Teresa Keiger and let them know what you have to offer your region.?
Show News
Welcome Back, Carolina Sophisticats
and
Thank You, National Alliance of Burmese Breeders!
February 15-16 2020 - Spartenburg, SC
Burmese breeders with their highest scoring Cats, Kittens, and Cats in Premiership
After a hiatus of many years, Carolina Sophisticats returned to the Carolinas. The area has been rather depleted of shows over the last decade. Several fanciers, many new to the fancy and/or the area, took an interest in reviving a club in the area. The National Alliance of Burmese Breeders also had several members in the surrounding area, and agreed to assist the new club with forming a joint show.
We want to share photos of our Southern Region shows! Please remember to send me a photo (and a short show story if you wish) immediately after your show for upcoming newsletters.

Continued Growth in Southern Region Shows

One thing that really helped both Carolina Sophisticats and NABB was the CFA Sponsorship package. With this, new clubs, clubs who have not produced a show in a number of years, or clubs producing a new show are eligible to receive funding from CFA, provided that they fulfill the requirements and provide documentation.

The region has already seen a number of new shows benefiting from this incentive. New Vision Cat Club in FL has produced several shows and is bringing an end of the season show back to the region on April 25-26 in Plant City. Keystone Kat Club & Southern Traditions Cat Club (revitalized clubs) are bringing a new show to the region in Jacksonville, FL May 16-17. Then later in the year, the new club Land of the Sky Cat Fanciers will hold their first show in Asheville, NC November 21-22.

Interested in expanding even more shows in the Southern Region? Contact Regional Director Kenny Currle for more info.

Did You Know??
The Southern Region is seeing the greatest increase in counts and number of shows than in any other region.

Upcoming Southern Region Shows
  • March 14-15 - Timonium, MD - Crab and Mallet
  • March 21-22 - Raleigh, NC - Coastal Paws CC
  • March 28-29 - Knoxville, TN - Tennessee Valley CF
  • April 4-5 - Griffin, GA - Ocicats International (new date!)
  • April 18 - Frederick, MD - Mad Catters
  • April 25-26 - Plant City, FL - New Vision CC
Got show news? We want to know!

Did something special happen at a show? Got a show brag? Want to give a shout out to a new exhibitor? Let us know!

Coronavirus Response

I want to let you know that CFA is taking steps to address the potential impact of this virus on our organization.? We are being proactive.

Last week I appointed the CFA Coronavirus Response Team which is being coordinated by Kathy Calhoun. Kathy has extensive background in Program Management.? She has appointed members to this team.

I have called a board meeting for tomorrow night, Monday, March 2nd, via conference call.? We will discuss the appropriate steps CFA needs to take which will include both what assistance we can provide to our clubs and our judges, as well as dealing with the potential impact on our Central Office operations. We are an international organization and local governments in some affected countries have already imposed procedures that eliminate large gatherings (such as cat shows).

We currently have 23 staff members.? Eight of them work from home.? If conditions warrant, we can quickly enable the remaining staff members to work from home.? Our Executive Director has already encouraged any staff members who normally work in the office and become sick to stay home.? They have also been encouraged to follow recommended respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene.

I encourage each of you to keep up-to-date with media and government information regarding this dangerous virus and to follow recommended advice on how you can protect yourself and your family members.

Shows Cancelled
?March 12, 2020
?? ?
As a valued family member of the cat fancy, your safety and well being are CFA's top priority. With continued news around coronavirus (COVID-19), I want to personally share the steps we are taking to protect you.
?
Beginning on Monday, March 16, all shows through May 31 will be cancelled - effectively ending the show season after this weekend.

It is not a decision that was taken lightly.? Our team worked together to formulate the best options for exhibitors, spectators and judges. The best option was to cancel all remaining shows.? Since the only show this coming weekend is the Crab & Mallet show which would go on without spectators and because of the late hour, we decided it prudent to let the Crab & Mallet show be held - so as not to inconvenience exhibitors and judges already in transit.

The Board will in the near future discuss possible change to the minimums for national awards including breed wins.? We will also discuss possible financial compensation to clubs impacted by the cancellations.? Share your thoughts with your Regional Director or ID Committee chair.
?
I will keep you posted as events around the world continue to impact all of our lives.? I want you to know that CFA is committed to our fanciers, our business and our communities.

CFA News
Memo From Mark
As you surely know by now, the CFA Board of Directors has cancelled all shows between now and the end of May.?This was done in an effort to protect the health of our many loyal cat fanciers due to the spread of the coronavirus.?This was a difficult decision for the Board to make but the board felt it was necessary.

CFA¡¯s Coronavirus Response Team, headed up by Kathy Calhoun, will meet in the coming week to discuss what assistance CFA can provide to clubs whose shows were cancelled and if the minimums required for end-of-season awards should be modified.?That team will present motions to the entire board regarding these issues. As decisions are made we will share them with you via both CFA-News announcements as well as on the CFA website: .?The Board will monitor the impact of the virus and make decisions on when shows can return to production.
President Mark Hannon with show manager Carmen Johnson-Lawrence at the Genesee Cat Fanciers show in Brockport NY
?3/7-8/20
I encourage each of you to take precautions to keep yourself healthy.?Wash your hands often, don¡¯t touch your face, avoid large gatherings, and follow the advice from those with pertinent medical knowledge.?

People are asking about the Annual Meeting scheduled for June 19-20 in Spokane, Washington.?As of today, the Annual is still on.?We are doing due diligence and working with the hotel to mitigate our losses should we need to cancel and we are working with a New York attorney to determine our options should we either not be able to hold the meeting or if we do not get a quorum.?We are incorporated in the state of New York and their laws govern us since our own CFA Constitution does not address what happens if we do not have a quorum or are not able to hold the Annual Meeting. In the meantime, each club should select a delegate to represent them at the Annual and submit the required notice to the Central Office.?It can be handled online at: .?The form must be received by midnight on Wednesday, May 1st.

If you have questions or comments, please share them with your Regional Director or ID Committee Chair.

CFA Marketing Committee

Words are powerful.

Think about this for a minute: How do you describe yourself to others? As a breeder, exhibitor, cat owner? One of the strategic goals of the Marketing Committee is to improve and enhance the general opinion and knowledge of our pedigree cats. One of the ways we can do this is in the messaging and words we use to describe ourselves. I recently watched an AKC video on this topic, and I am going to steal some of their ideas, as they equate to the cat fancy as well.

The first message we need to portray is that we are ¡°Preservation Breeders.¡± The numbers of cats we produce and the number of breeding cats in many of our breeds is far below what any scientist would consider as safe. Our numbers are far smaller than many species on the endangered list. Some of our breeds don¡¯t have gene pools but have gene puddles! So we are not just breeders of cats, but we are preserving our breeds of cats, thus we are Preservation Breeders. In fact, in this AKC video he called for people who are breeding one breed to add another breed to help preserve that breed. Look at the average age of our breeders and how few there are that are taking their place. Losing one minority breed breeder has significant impact on the continuation of that breed. So start using the phrase ¡°Preservation Breeder,¡± and see if you can add another breed into your breeding plans.

Another topic was that the dogs are ¡°Purposefully Bred.¡± This is easier to equate to the dog breeds as they were created for hunting, as protectors, or as service animals. So this is a little bit of a stretch to equate to cats. But when you think of the personality, health, coat color/texture/length, and sizes of the cats, we are choosing to replicate the ideal model of that breed. We do that breeding with purpose, to ensure the type, health, and temperament of the resulting offspring. These are not random litters of cats as those running in the street or ending up in shelters. These kittens were Purposefully Bred, and that not only gives them value but also speaks to our actions as being valuable. We can predict the health, personality, coat color, and size. And we are dedicated to the welfare of these animals through our contracts, rescue organizations, breed councils, and being a responsible breeder.

Our pedigrees are not just names on a piece of paper; they are the family tree of our cats, their heritage. We are Preservationists who intentionally produce Purposefully Bred cats. Use these terms in your thoughts and words. Words are powerful!

Help! Someone Grab the First Aid Kit!
Where is it? Who was supposed to bring it? What should be in it?

Show Rule 9.06 ¨C The show manager must provide a First Aid Kit which must include a box of latex and/or vinyl gloves. The show manager shall endeavor to provide an adequate industrial type First Aid Kit at the announcers stand, or when there is no central announcer, at the master clerks table.

Emergency numbers (ambulance service, police and fire) must be affixed to the top of the First Aid Kit.

When looking online or at a store, First Aid Kits come in many shapes and sizes with a variety of contents. They range in price from $2 to $300. It can be hard to know which one is the right one.??

According to the United States Department of Labor, a First Aid Kit should include gauze pads (4x4 inches and 8x10 inches), a box of adhesive bandages, one package of gauze roller bandage (at least 2 inches wide), two triangular bandages, wound cleaning agent, scissors, blanket, adhesive tape, tweezers, gloves, resuscitation equipment, two elastic wraps, splint, and directions for requesting emergency assistance.

First Aid Kits should be evaluated for expiration dates and sound packaging regularly. Storing the needed items in a clean waterproof container can help organize and protect the supplies. This also provides ample space to affix emergency numbers.

Extra things that I have found to be helpful to include are first aid/CPR instructions, antibiotic ointment, water gel/burn dressing, non stick dressing pads (Telfa), instant ice packs, and hand sanitizer. The elastic wraps mentioned in the list can be either Coban or vet wrap type (single use) or ACE bandage (multi use). Wound cleanser can be liquid type (chlorhexidine) or sealed premoistened towelettes. The resuscitation equipment can be a simple pocket mask or face shield that can be purchased from the Red Cross (online for $3.99).??

Some First Aid Kits include basic medications like aspirin or acetaminophen. When using these kits just be sure the medications are checked for expiration and allergies are confirmed prior to administration.

Keep in mind the First Aid Kit is just the first step in care, please seek professional medical attention when needed. The hope is no one will ever need to use a First Aid Kit, but it is good to know that at our CFA shows one is available and fully stocked for the judges, exhibitors, show personnel, and spectators.

Georgia Surety Bill, Minnesota Companion Animal Board Bill, and Palm Springs, CA Proposed Restrictive Breeder Permit Ordinance
Georgia
The Georgia Senate passed an amended Senate Bill 338 on March 10, 2020 which would require licensed pet animal breeders to pay a $7500 to $500,000 surety bond in addition to the license fee for a pet dealer license. The surety funds would be used to provide for the health and welfare of animals when the licensee is unable or unwilling to care for the animals or if the animals were impounded. A license shall be revoked without a hearing if the surety becomes insufficient. Although the original bill¡¯s threshold had been 20 animals, the amendment returned it to the current statutory threshold for licensing as selling, adopting, exchanging, or offering to do the same for more than 30 cats or dogs (or other covered pets) in a twelve-month period. The statute as well as this bill authorize the Department of Agriculture Commissioner to reduce that threshold. The Commissioner has historically required anyone whose cat, dog, or other covered animal has more than one litter in a twelve-month period to be licensed. Thus, the one litter rule should still be in effect if S.B. 338 is enacted. The bill also increases the maximum license fee from $400 to $800.?

Minnesota
Senate File 3481, similar to House File 3584, would transfer the licensing, enforcement, and inspection of companion animal kennels, dealers, and commercial breeders from the Board of Animal Health (BAH) to the newly created Companion Animal Board (CAB) if enacted. The BAH consists of two veterinarians and three livestock producers, whereas the CAB would have 13 members, only one of which would be a regulated companion animal breeder. Although the board has the authority to create an ¡°advisory task force with a majority of members who have a working knowledge of companion health and welfare issues,¡± it is not a requirement. The CAB would be responsible for serving the public, state and local governments, and nonprofit animal welfare organizations. Its duties include providing public education on companion animal issues, providing expertise to government entities, assist with companion animal disaster relief services, and analyze and distribute information on data collected relating to companion animals in the state. Under Minnesota Statute 347.57 (5), a ¡°commercial breeder¡± means a person who possesses or has an ownership interest in animals and is engaged in the business of breeding animals for sale or for exchange in return for consideration, and who possesses ten or more adult intact animals and whose animals produce more than five total litters of puppies or kittens per year.

Palm Springs, California
Mayor Pro Tem Christy Holstege has again proposed an ordinance that would make it virtually impossible for small in-home show breeders to pursue their hobby in the city. Calling it a ¡°compromise¡± position from the proposed 2018 total ban on ¡°backyard breeding¡± (February 27, 2020 ), this new proposal would still make it difficult for breeders to pursue their hobby in a meaningful way. The proposed breeding permit states the ¡°breeding permit shall authorize no more than one (1) dog or cat litter per domestic household in any twelve (12) month period, or the offering of a male dog or cat for stud once in any twelve ( 12) month period.¡± Emphasis added.?Under the administrative penalties section, however, it is a violation to allow an animal to be bred more than once in a twelve month period. There is a clear disconnect between the permit language and the penalty language as a single breeding, or even multiple breedings, may not yield a litter. Not only would this ordinance preclude viable breeding programs, but if someone owned both a male and a female and bred them together, they would violate the proposed ordinance. The annual permit fee would be $100. With existing laws and a population under 50,000, one wonders if this just a solution in search of a problem. For example, according to the council discussion at the February 27, 2020 council meeting, all breeders must have a business permit and are subject to inspection under current law. In addition, the city has a kennel ordinance applying to anyone with four or more cats or dogs at least four months of age, and an ordinance restricting the source of dogs and cats sold at pet stores. State law also limits the sources of cats and dogs sold in pet stores to so-called humane sources such as government-run shelters. And breeders in the state are subject to the 2007 California Board of Equalization policy requiring a seller¡¯s permit to collect and remit sales tax for sellers of more than two pets or other nonfood animals during a twelve month period.?

Need more time to file your federal income tax return??Whether you need an extension of time to file because of changes to tax law, the COVID-19 pandemic, or other circumstances, the extension to file is automatic if you follow the rules.?Here are some things you need to know when you take the automatic extension to file:
  • Your request for an extension must be filed (or postmarked) by the due date of your return, April 15.?You will then have six months to file your return and not be subject to the late-filing penalty.?You don¡¯t even need to tell the IRS the reason for the extension.??
  • With the automatic extension you will have until October 15, 2020 to file your federal return.
  • Your tax preparer may make the request for an extension on your behalf.???
  • The extension to file does NOT extend your time for payment of any taxes due.?If you expect to owe money with your return you should make a good faith payment with your extension request to avoid additional interest and penalties.
  • Some taxpayers automatically receive extensions to file their return.?This may include citizens living overseas, military personnel serving overseas, or taxpayers affected by designated natural disasters.?(As of this writing there has NOT been a national extension to file due to COVID-19 but this may change.)?If one of these situations applies to you please visit the IRS web site for the applicable rules.
  • If you are required to file a state income tax return you must also request an extension from any state in which a return would be due.?State rules for requesting an extension to file vary.

The federal Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, form 4868, may be found .

For additional information on taking an automatic extension to file, including filing online and how to pay any taxes you expect will be owed, visit on the IRS' website.

Region 2 is very excited to host this year¡¯s CFA Annual in Spokane, WA. Spokane is located in the Northeast corner of the state. We haven¡¯t had a cat show there for many years. It is a beautiful city and the locale for the Annual is very lovely. I think you will enjoy the experience.

Lori and Janet Hollister were asked to produce the delegate bags. They decided to order the bags in five different colors then added the decorations. The girls picked out a fabric that has eight different ¡°cat¡± positions. The illustrations were cut out and fused to the individual bags. There will be a variety of bags filled with goodies and interesting things this year! It has taken them a full year and the bags are ready to go. If you wish to help with the stuffing, the activity will take place at 2 pm on Wednesday, June 17th at the Davenport Grand Hotel. Lori and Janet are known throughout our region for the many beautiful hand-crafted items that they have created.?
As many of you know, the Tails and No Tails club had to cancel their show this year. The San Jose Fairgrounds cancelled all events at the last moment. Since this was the second show to be canceled in No Cal, the exhibitors are devastated.?

Show Report

The Genesee Cat Fanciers hosted their 68th annual show on Saturday and Sunday March 7 & 8 in Brockport, NY.?To say this show exceeded expectations would be an understatement.?Entries, official count, and exhibitors increased of 2019.?But what was more exciting was that our gate increased 20% over 2019; and more than doubled over years before that!?We also had an increase in vendors, with new features including a TNR/Rescue group and a local winery (yes, they had sample tastings available!)?A local news station even visited our show on Sunday morning.?

Many people asked over the weekend, ¡°What did we do differently this year?¡±?Our advertising expense was the same.?However, we took many of the suggestions the marketing committee and Mike Altschul have given such as pre-sale tickets, increasing our admission fee and just making sure we had the right level of interaction on our Facebook event.?

As all show producing clubs know, it takes a village to pull these off, and Genesee has the right village amongst members, family and friends, and other volunteers to make all we do possible.?Our selection of judges entertained our guests with presentation and explanation of the cats they were handling.?We have a great group that can still take time to explain each of the breeds but continue their ¡°jobs¡± efficiently.?

Genesee also welcomed Laura Gregory for her second training session!?There were several grands at this show as well, we congratulate all the exhibitors on their accomplishments through the weekend and wish them luck in this last month and a half of the season.
We all spent most of the weekend running like chickens with our heads cut off so not many photos were taken.?However, we share with you this nice photo taken by Edward Goatseay (YFEP) of judge Loretta Baugh with Scrumpy.?

We look forward to seeing you for Monroe SH on August 16, National Siamese on September 5 & 6 and the 2021 version of Genesee on March 6 & 7, 2021.

Well, this newsletter will be a lot different from the last ones, to say the least.

Due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, all shows are canceled for the foreseeable future.?For those of us that the fancy has been such a large part of our lives, there is a feeling of loss.

I started when I was 15 showing my cat, Clown.?It wasn't until 1978 that I started back again.?So, for the better part of 42 years, my life has revolved around cats and cat shows.

This is the first time I am not able to travel to a cat show, and I feel a big loss!?I am sure many of us feel the same way about a hobby that has been a major part of our lives.?

This is not CFA's fault, it is not the board members fault, it is lack of preparedness to handle the problem.??

The anger is real and the feeling of the loss of our hobby is real.

In the history of the United States, and the world, we have faced problems before, and we eventually will get through this crisis.

It may be time to rethink the way we handle our Annual meeting, bring in the technology we have available to us.?Instead of renting great venues, we all sit at home and conduct our meetings and only get together to celebrate the awards.?That would save lots of money and limit the exposure to anything threatening to wipe out our population.

We could have the award banquet but the cost would be greatly reduced.

As a hobby we need to stick together and support each other as we go through the withdrawals of not showing our cats, seeing our friends, and celebrating the hobby we love.

So I am angry and deeply saddened by all of this that is happening to our country, and our world.???

However we can come out of this a stronger and better hobby.?

I did hear that Dr. Pedersen from UC Davis fame who worked on the F.I.P. problem for years has joined the fight against this Corona virus.?If that is true, we have someone who really knows about it working on a way to eradicate this virus.?

I hope everyone stays healthy and safe out there.?Follow the CDC recommendations to protect yourself from the COVID-19 virus so that we can soon regather and celebrate our hobby!?I expect to see everyone at the next shows we are able to have.??

After a hiatus of many years, Carolina Sophisticats returned to the Carolinas. The area has been rather depleted of shows over the last decade. Several fanciers, many new to the fancy and/or the area, took an interest in reviving a club in the area. The National Alliance of Burmese Breeders also had several members in the surrounding area, and agreed to assist the new club with forming a joint show.

?February 15-16 2020 - Atlanta, GA
Atlanta Phoenix has found a new home and a new date.?Exhibitors loved the new showhall in Marietta.?We?had an increase in entries this year.??Huge thanks to Mike Altschul's expertise and many hours spent on Facebook promotions which resulted in an amazing amount of spectators, many of which had never been to a cat show before.?Exhibitors seemed to be having a great time with many celebrations and parties down the rows.?Our vendors were happy and all requested to return again next year.?We also had some rescue kitties adopted as well.
Fundraising
Jacqui Bennett, regional fundraising chair, has been busy getting fundraising efforts going. In January, she began organizing clubs to hold a different sort of raffle.??It's a variation of the traditional 50/50 raffle, and based on "all cats entered" (ACE). Exhibitors are first given the opportunity to purchase their on their own cats' numbers, then the raffle is opened up so that exhibitors can purchase ANY cat's number.?Now, how bad would it be to have someone else win a split of the pot on?YOUR number? You win, the region wins, and we all have fun! Proceeds from this effort will support regional events, such as our awards banquet. Many thanks to Claire Dubit and Lyn Knight for donating their winnings to the region, and to Hope Gonano for the idea for this inventive raffle!

Each day brings more and more challenges and disruptions for us in our daily lives. At CFA, we are determined to make your lives as simple as we can when it comes to your hobby. With so much uncertainty, we are tackling issues one at a time - with short-term decisions that are subject to modifications.
?
Our most recent decision as a board is to impose a moratorium on issuing new show licenses - equally around the world. The moratorium begins now and continues through May 31, 2020.? We will continue to review our options as more information becomes available and this world crisis continues to unfold.? When the moratorium is lifted, we will waive late fees that would otherwise apply.
?
We recognize that different parts of the world are responding differently depending on the impact of the COVID-19 virus. We are committed to treat all member clubs the same and to strive to help keep our cat fanciers safe.
?
I look forward to share more information when there is something new to report.? In the meantime, be safe and healthy.
