Memo From Mark
The ballots for the CFA Officers, Regional Directors, and the China Rep are being tabulated this week. We hired an outside accounting firm this year rather than have the members of the Credentials Committee travel to perform that task due to health concerns with COVID-19. The ballots will be sent via overnight mail to Nancy Dodds, chair of the Credentials Committee, for verification.?The results will be announced via a CFA-News announcement Friday afternoon (June 19). That is when the results would have been announced had we held our Annual Meeting this year.?A remarkably high number of eligible clubs voted this year which I take as a sign of the interest in the competitive races.?Nine of the board seats up for election this year have only one declared candidate; however, there is competition for President and Regional Directors in Regions 3,6,7, and 9.
The last meeting with the existing Board will be held, as usual, on Thursday, June 18th.?The first meeting with the new Board will be held on Sunday, June 21st.?Traditionally, the Sunday board meeting is brief and includes the appointment of committee chairs.?Darrell and I coordinated on the time for the Sunday meeting since we did not know who would be President on Sunday.?It will start at 12:00 noon Eastern time.

The Board of Directors approved virtual shows and approved guidelines for those shows.?The guidelines were listed in a CFA-News announcement distributed on June 14th.?CFA-News announcements are our official means of communication.?

While our in-person shows have been cancelled for now, Desiree Bobby, our Marketing Director, has been very busy on social media.?Lots of different contests are taking place with more on the way.?Check out the CFA Facebook page for her latest efforts to keep everyone engaged in our wonderful hobby.

CFA is, as usual, printing an awards booklet with photos listing the national winners for the 2019-2020 show season.?The awards will be shipped to the winners in mid-July and a copy of the booklet will be included.?We will place a PDF version online for anyone who does not receive a hard copy.?Once again, congratulations to the winners.?We had terrific cats shown last season and it is unfortunate that we can not gather in person to celebrate.?

That¡¯s it from me this month.

CFA Sponsors and Provides Scholarships to The Community Cats Podcast¡¯s 2020 Online Kitten Conference
As documented in the CFA Constitution, our first priority is the welfare of cats. That¡¯s why we often partner with and support organizations that also strive to enhance the well-being of all kittens and cats; no matter where they come from or where they live.

The Cat Fanciers¡¯ Association is a proud sponsor of and their virtual conference which took place this past weekend. The Community Cats Podcast provides education, weekly informative audio episodes, mentoring and grant programs which empower people to help all community cats.

The Community Cats Podcast¡¯s 2020 Online Kitten Conference, co-hosted by the National Kitten Coalition, featured presentations by feline experts and veterinarians from the University of California Davis, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Best Friends Animal Society, national research foundations such as Maddie¡¯s Fund and more. CFA awarded scholarships to three individuals that exemplified a dedication to cats and kittens in their community and were in pursuit of knowledge to better help them. Feline UpRoad Cleveland, an organization whose efforts decrease the number of homeless pets and lessen the strain on shelters and rescues, helped qualify the candidates.

Stay tuned in the upcoming months as we highlight the topics and guests scheduled to be on The Community Cats Podcast and what CFA is doing to support their efforts.
CFA on Instagram
Are you following CFA on Instagram yet? If so, you may have noticed that we now have over 10,000 followers. You will also see an increase in engagement opportunities and posts as we strive to keep you informed and entertained.

Please follow us and tag us in photos of your cats along with stories about their accomplishments and antics. Profiles that highlight that they are a CFA Cattery or use the CFA logo in their posts will get priority.
Tag @cfacats or use hashtags: #cfacats #catsofcfa

Please note that we now only follow clubs, judges, partners, vendors, organizations and confirmed CFA cats back only. Each week we get hundreds of tags and followers, and found that implementing a policy of not following catteries back is the best way to support engagement opportunities for active accounts and eliminate any suspicions of favoritism.
Cat Talk
Teresa Keiger - Editor
LOTS of news from Cat Talk this month, so let's get started!
Our June issue is now out, and I have to say, I think that it's the best issue that we have ever produced! That's especially remarkable when one realizes that we completely changed content at almost the last hour to reflect how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected cat fanciers. Many thanks to our staff, and to all our our readers who contributed stories and photos for this special issue. Even the cover was a collaborative effort. Trisha Seifried and Lucy Drury (Siberian and black domestic cats ) and Martin Potgieter did special photoshoots of cats with PPE which Teresa Keiger then used several photos from to create the special wraparound cover (below)
SO very proud to announce that Cat Talk and its staff made a good showing in the Cat Writers' Association's 2020 Communications' Contest! We won 11 Certificates of Merit (meaning that 3 judges' average score was 90 or above - not easy to do!) and CFA-related entries earned an additional 6 awards! The highest-scoring entry in each category will win the Muse Award.

First of all, our Board of Directors would like to thank everyone for the tremendous support given to our fundraiser on Facebook to cover our re-opening expenses. We more than exceeded our $3000 goal, and are excited to start with planning to re-open the Feline Historical Museum.
We¡¯ve been busy creating flipbooks on interesting topics. First, we did one comparing the ¡°old days¡± of CFA with the more current ones. The second one is a very detailed look at the history of the Empire Cat Club and the historical club artifacts in our collection. These can be found at:

Chicago, IL Retail Pet Store Ordinance¡¯s Troubled History with ¡°Rescues¡± would Force Licensing of All Cat Breeders

Licensing all cat, dog, and rabbit breeders is a problematic side effect of a proposed ordinance meant to fix problems arising from the 2014 Retail Pet Store Ordinance. Each breeder would be subject to license fees (currently $275), inspections, facilities and care requirements if enacted. To understand the rationale behind the proposed ordinance, presently assigned to the council¡¯s Committee on Health and Human Relations, one must know the troubled history of the current law.

In 2014, the city of Chicago was one of the early local governments to amend its Animal Care ordinance in hopes of curtailing the local market for ¡°puppy mill¡± puppies as advocated by a growing national advocacy network. For good measure, cats and sometimes rabbits are included in these laws, and the newly enacted provisions were effective in 2015. Rather than simply prohibit retail pet stores from selling animals that they purchased as inventory for retail sale, the ordinance allowed stores to acquire, or ¡°source¡± from animal rescues and resell these animals to the public. In 2017, the 10th Circuit Federal Court upheld the ordinance in a challenge by one of the local pet stores. Not to be deterred from satisfying local demand for puppies, USDA licensed commercial breeders created their own ¡°rescue¡± organizations to channel selected puppies to the Chicago pet stores and others to pet stores where there were no restrictive laws. A 2018 investigative report in the Chicago Tribune exposed these practices as ¡°outsmarting city ordinance.¡± (Designer and purebred puppies from other states sold as rescue dogs in Chicago, , Chicago Tribune 5/18/2018 . Fast forward two years, and proposed remedial amendments are in the legislative channel but raising new concerns.

Last month, at a virtual City Council meeting, the proposed ordinance was explained as allowing ¡°pet shops to provide space to an animal shelter or rescue organization to house and display dogs, cats and rabbits for adoption¡± and further:

But it also states: ¡°The pet shop shall not have any ownership or monetary interest in the animals displayed for adoption. The animals may only be transferred to an adopting individual for a nominal adoption fee.¡± ()

Over the years of the ¡°adopt don¡¯t shop¡± campaign transitioning from outside advocacy to legislation, drafting approaches were like replacement windows that were often ¡°stuck into¡± existing law with haphazard efforts to fit the local framework or consider future needs. Municipal attorneys vary in drafting standards that can avoid future problems by using narrow, clear prohibitions that help to avoid the kinds of unclear and unnecessary exemptions that lead to ¡°loopholes.¡± The ¡°stop puppy mills¡± objective has often trumped the realities of local consumer demand for puppies that could be filled with some modest restrictions on existing USDA licensed breeders and persists in the current efforts. There has never been a viable business model for stores to ¡°acquire¡± their own inventory for resale, particularly when the traditional humane sources were unwilling to sell to stores for resale even if stores were willing to forego profit potential. Now, the ¡°fix¡± is to prohibit stores from reselling but ensure that they can legally ¡°showcase¡± for ¡°adoption¡± from the ¡°humane sources.¡± The critical issue is whether the humane source should continue to include rescues and, if so, how can these be defined to exclude de facto for-profit sales. The current effort involved redefining ¡°rescue¡± with a list of exclusionary requirements and whether this new definition applies only in the pet store law context or across all the laws involving rescue and the newly added provisions. This effort not only includes ¡°fixes¡± as in Chicago and currently amending California state law but also in newly enacted ordinances such as , South Carolina, the first known local ordinance in the state enacted in August 2019 with the new type definition of animal rescue organization containing restrictive elements referring to breeders.

For Chicago, divorcing ¡°commercial producers¡± from rescue means redefining the rescue organization and animal care facility definitions terms. The proposed rescue organization definition would be changed by adding the following underlined language:

¡°any not-for-profit organization that has tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code, whose mission and practice is, in whole or in significant part, the rescue and placement of dogs, cats or rabbits. "Rescue organization" does not include any person that (i) is a commercial producer: (ii) obtains dogs, cats, or rabbits from a commercial producer: (iii) facilitates the sale for profit of a dog, cat, or rabbit for a commercial producer: (iv) has common personnel with a commercial producer, including, but not limited to, any employee, manager, or board member: or (v) is an "affiliated business." as that term is defined by 44 111. Adm. Code ¡ì 20.540(b), of a commercial producer.¡±

A commercial producer is defined as ¡°a person that breeds dogs, cats, or rabbits for the purpose of selling the offspring¡± thereby excluding rescues in which breeders are involved.

Redefining animal care facility as proposed eliminates the consistency with the state breeder licensing law that excludes from state cat or dog breeder definition anyone who ¡°owns, has possession of, or harbors 5 or less females capable of reproduction¡±. The revised definition would be changed by striking the exemption for breeders with five or fewer females capable of reproduction and the one for those who had only occasional sales of animals they produced and raised.?However, the definition would still include those who are engaged in the business of breeding (and other activities). But the proposal stipulates that ¡°engaged in the business¡± of breeding means anyone who owns, possesses, or harbors a female cat or dog that reproduces. The only ¡°breeders¡± exempted are those who surrender the offspring and mother to an approved animal shelter or rescue facility within 30 days of the birth of the litter, or provide documentation within three months of the birth to Chicago Animal Care and Control that the mother and the offspring have been sterilized and microchipped.

The proposed ordinance not only removes the consistency with the state breeder licensing law, it deprives some legitimate rescues of an important adoption tool. Since all these ¡°bans¡± are really about dogs and not cats (and rabbits where included), consideration should be given to local cat rescues that have for years had arrangements with local pet stores to display their own community cats for adoption and could be at risk from these ¡°new¡± definitions, as well as risks to fanciers from poorly conceived amendments or even exclusion of private rescue organizations.

I hope everyone is well and and staying healthy during this Covid19 pandemic.?As everything is opening up we still need to be careful and safe. That being said we do need to come back to a more normal lifestyle.

So my question is, what is CFA without cat shows?
We all are missing the shows, the cats and the people! CFA is a registering body for registered cats.?It is not CFA?putting on cat shows; the clubs do.?So, who should decide when we do that, the clubs or the CFA Board?

My opinion??I think the clubs should decide based on their local government prescribed protocols.??That is the opinion of approximately 50% of the board members. I suggest you contact your regional and directors at large and let them know you want the clubs to decide when, and if, you want to have a show or not.

The SWR is in the last days of sponsorship of awards, and, the way it¡¯s going, we may not have any awards to present next year if we don't have any shows. The SWR sponsorships are due by June 20th. Debi Gomez has a splendid website up and running making it quick and easy to do.

Let¡¯s sponsor these cats, since next year may not happen.??Let¡¯s enjoy the season we had and celebrate ? now while we can!

Although we did not have our planned regional awards banquet this past weekend, the awards team has been busy organizing many banquet-related items. Trish Blees has been hard at work verifying addresses and ordering our winners¡¯ trophies.?Krista Schmitt has been organizing photos and Powerpoint presentations. Leslie Carr, Tracy Petty, and Jenny Wickle painstakingly worked on and proofed sheets and sheets of data. And Charlotte Shelburne and Teresa Keiger are busy compiling the awards booklet. Many thanks to them for all the hours that they¡¯ve put in for this event. Expect to be seeing awards arriving and the presentations and booklet uploaded soon. Unfortunately, Cheryl Coleman received so few photos that we¡¯ve decided to forego our traditional ¡°On the Road Again¡± compilation this year.
Here¡¯s looking forward to when we can all celebrate our 2019-2020 winners in person!
Our COVID-19 Go Fund Me raised over $5000 and we have closed it. We are happy to report that most clubs were able to work through issues with show halls and cancelled flight, although we are loaning a couple of them funds until they have been reimbursed. We will also be making a donation to our two regional show services to help support them while we have no shows. The largest balance of the funds will go to our regional BAP program, as we¡¯ve certainly had individuals who needed assistance during this crisis. Many thanks to fund raisers Jacqui Bennett and Teresa Keiger, and regional treasurer Karen Boyce.

Last month, Regional Director Kenny Currle asked Rich Nolte if he would be willing to organize CFA's first virtual cat show in the United States. Entries are now OPEN TO EVERYONE ANYWHERE! Just to enter your cat and go to the for more information. Click here for the show flyer. PLUS: Best in Show will receive a trophy, a rosette, and a $50 VISA gift card!?Top 3 in each class will win one of Chastity Rider¡¯s fantastic cat toys! Many thanks to show manager Rich Nolte and committee members Jacqui Bennett and Jo Ann Miksa-Blackwell for producing this fundraiser for the region!
Entries close June 30, so get your entries in now! Winners announced July 7th.

Printed publications of all types and in all industries have been diminishing for years and finally cease publication entirely. The CFA Almanac was introduced as a monthly, color, printed magazine in May 1984, moved to bi-monthly in 2004. The final print version was the October/November 2007 edition and the Online Almanac (OLA) started.

Sadly, the time has come to make the difficult decision about ceasing publication of the CFA Yearbook. If the Board agrees with this direction, I'll work with Shelly Borawski and Teresa Keiger to develop a detailed plan for consideration at the August 2020 board meeting. The proposal will include beefing up Cat Talk, a bi-monthly magazine bundled with the OLA, to include more photos and possibly reducing the number of issues from six to three or four with each issue highlighting an event such as award winners, the Annual Meeting, breed popularity stats or the CFA International Cat Show.

The bundled version of Cat Talk and OLA has approximately 600 subscribers. Other than Epoints, most of what is in the OLA is suitable for the CFA website and will be unbundled from Cat Talk. Epoints and Cat Talk would be available as stand-alone subscriptions and the OLA would be phased out.
The electronic, monthly CFA Newsletter is popular with approximately 4,000 subscribers and there are no major changes planned for it.
Motion: Motion to proceed with plans to:
  1. ?Stop producing the Yearbook after publication of the 2021 Yearbook. - Carried
  2. ?Unbundle Cat Talk and the Online Almanac, which currently include Epoints, and extend OLA subscriptions through December 2020. - Tabled for August to have additional information
  3. ?Transition to an expanded Cat Talk, phase out the Online Almanac and offer a separate subscription to Epoints. - Tabled for August to have additional information

Top Five Things Your Cat Wants You to Know
this 4th of July
Here are the top 5 things you need to know to keep your cat safe and calm during the fireworks this 4th of July. -By Dr. Liz Bales

1-??Prepare, then relax and stay calm.?When you are calm, your cat is more likely to stay calm.
?
2-??In the shelter community, July 5 is one of the busiest days of the year.?Frightened cats can bolt through open windows and from familiar places and become disoriented and lost. Bring your cats indoors long before the fireworks begin. Secure doors/windows, so your frightened cat doesn¡¯t escape.?In the event your cat does get out, make sure microchip info is up to date and have a current photo.

3-??Cats hide when they are afraid.?This makes them feel safe and secure.?Provide your cat with plenty of cozy places to hide, like covered beds and cat tunnels.?Make sure they have easy access to a litter box, food, and water from the hiding spots.

4-??Play white noise, classical music, or music designed specifically for cats to soothe your cat and help to buffer the noise.

5-??Talk to your vet. They can help you decide if medication is warranted to help your cat through the fireworks.

?Planned Giving Tips

Not all income tax breaks require you itemize your deductions.?Some are also available to people taking the standard deduction.?Many are ¡°above-the-line¡± and work by reducing your adjusted gross income before calculating taxes.?They are available to you whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
This year there is a charitable deduction available for people taking the standard deduction.?The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act creates a new $300 ¡°above-the-line¡± charitable deduction for donations made during 2020 and claimed on your 2020 return next year.?
If you own a business or work for yourself (including contractors and ¡°gig¡± workers) you may still deduct your ordinary business expenses.?These expenses are used to determine the ¡°net profit¡± on your business, which is then added to your other sources of income to determine your adjusted gross income.???

If you work for yourself you may be able to write off up to half of what you pay in social security tax.?Self-employed taxpayers may deduct costs of health insurance for themselves or their families.?(You generally can¡¯t claim this adjustment if you or your spouse are eligible for health insurance through an employer.)?

If you own a rental property, expenses associated with the property are deductible against rental income, regardless of whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.?
Contributions to a traditional individual retirement account (IRA) reduce your taxable income.?Money used to fund a health savings account may reduce your income if you made contributions with after-tax money.?For the self-employed, contributions to certain retirement plans reduce your taxable income.?
Educator expenses of up to $250 each year for supplies purchased for your classroom may be claimed as an adjustment to income.

Interest on student loans up to $4,000 per year may be claimed to reduce your taxable income.?This is subject to certain restrictions, including income limitations, and has been extended through 2020.
Penalties for early withdrawal from CDs or other deposit accounts may be an adjustment to income.
These tax breaks are available to taxpayers who itemize as well as those who take the standard deduction, although some may be subject to restrictions.?Please consult your tax advisor for more information.

The $2,500 scholarships, one for feline clinical practice and one for feline clinical research scientist, are awarded to veterinary students who show a passion for feline health and welfare and believe the advancement of feline medicine is crucial across all veterinary practices.
Congratulations Ms. Tondo and Ms. King!
Ms. Jessica Tondo, who currently is a third-year veterinary student at Western University of Health Sciences, was awarded the feline clinical practice scholarship. Ms. Tondo always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and after receiving her B.S. in Physiology from the University of Washington in Seattle, she decided to focus on her passion and start her journey to become a veterinarian. ¡°I hope to advocate for feline health and wellness. I have grown up with cats my whole life, and am forever grateful for the love and compassion they provide.¡±
Ms. Emily King, a junior at The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine, was awarded the clinical research scientist scholarship due to her exceptional promise in feline medicine. ¡°Bit by the research bug,¡± early on in her education, Ms. King was drawn to investigation into feline-specific research. This led her to explore the role anatomic pathologists play and how the research integrated into feline medicine. ¡°With the knowledge and experience I hope to gain from this next step, I'd eventually love to apply this to feline-specific research (such as FCoV or FIV).¡±

[CFA-SR] Regional Poll: Calculating grand points in the 2020-2021 season

Regional Poll
?
Should the method of calculating grand points change for the
2020-2021 season?
?
?
The CFA Board of Directors has been asked to consider a motion to double the amount of the actual grand points which a cat receives at a show for the 2020-2021 season ONLY. For example, if a cat earns 25 points, it would be scored as 50.
?
The rationale is that with a foreshortened season, it will be extremely difficult to grand a cat and some breeds/classes have a rather short window of opportunity in which to grand.
?
to see how the region feels about this.?Club secretaries, please share this email/link with your club members for their feedback as well.
?
There are also two questions which are OPTIONAL. One gives you the opportunity to say why you voted as you did. The other is to advance any other options you may have. OR you may email?Regional Director Kenny Currle at?kenny.currle2@...?with your concerns or comments.
?
This survey is completely anonymous. Again, the l ink to the poll is:?

CFA News
President's Message
The CFA elections have concluded.?Our new CFA Board of Directors met on Sunday June 21 using the Zoom platform.?We were happy to see that so many of our loyal cat fanciers signed on to watch the CFA board at work.?If you were not able to watch the meeting live, the recorded link has been posted on the .

Thank you to our outgoing regional directors Mary Auth, Kathy Black, Michael Schleissner and Kayoko Koizumi-san.??Also a very big thank you to Mark Hannon who has served the CFA Board for 22 years, including the past 6 years as CFA President.?

We welcome our new regional directors:?Pam DelaBar, Cathy Dunham, Steve McCullough, and Yukiko Hayata-san.?We welcome Cyndy Byrd who was appointed to fill my vacated seat as a director at large.?We now have a new CFA attorney, Shelly Perkins.?Lastly, I thank the clubs that supported my campaign to be your next president.

After the appointments for vacancies were ratified, the CFA board ratified the committee appointments.?

CFA stills faces many challenges which COVID-19 has inflicted upon our operations.?While we wait for advancements in treatments and the possible vaccinations to be developed, we are forced to limit, and in most instances, close down our show production of licensed CFA shows.?Unfortunately, we are witnessing an uptick in confirmed virus infections, primarily across our Southwest states, from Texas to California.?As many states were starting to reopen businesses, some have now slowed their process from moving through the various stages of re-opening.?Please obey your local, state, and federal rules.?These rules are to ward off more infections.?The NIH, CDC, and other agencies are working diligently to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.?

We are all getting questions about when will CFA shows be allowed to proceed.?That will depend on many factors, including limitations on assembly.?
  • When will local authorities allow events to occur??
  • Will our base support the club by entering and participating in cat shows??
  • Are the exhibitors willing to comply with social distancing requirements and wearing masks??
We will monitor future developments on control, treatment and eradication of the virus.?Until such time as we can safely re-open our shows, please shelter in place if you are in the high-risk category and wear a mask when you leave your home.

Some of our clubs have worked hard to develop virtual cat shows.?These efforts are helping clubs with fund raising events and appear to be very successful

The new judging program committee chairs have been meeting frequently via the Zoom platform.?The new committee is looking at enhancing the program to focus on education.?I have attended the meetings and they are developing some very good ideas.

We all look forward to advancing CFA into the Next Generation.

Geri Fellerman
Joe McIntyre
Residing in Reading, Pennsylvania, Joe is a long-time breeder of Exotics, specializing in silvers and goldens. An RN involved in hospice care, Joe has been kept very busy during the current pandemic. Employed by an agency that provides home health care and hospice aid, Joe is currently working from home communicating with the many health care workers employed by the agency. He spends many long hours reviewing documentation submitted by the workers for accuracy prior to sending reports to doctors for signature.
During a normal time, Joe would also be spending about two days a week in the office but has been unable to do so of late. Thus far, seven members of his nursing staff have been infected with the virus, although, fortunately, there have been no fatalities. Another part of Joe¡¯s responsibility is doing follow-ups on patients being released after hospitalization. On the upside, patients are, indeed, recovering and cases do not appear to be increasing in his area.

Show-producing clubs are making the tough decisions these days. Many clubs have contracts for judges several years out as well as contracts with event facilities and cage services. Local, state, and national governments have rules in place dictating event size as well as procedures for having events. There are rules about social distancing, face coverings, temperature monitoring, and symptom assessment. Some businesses are requiring signed waivers. It can be daunting to think about how to follow all the rules especially when the current situation changes as community health status fluctuates.

Keep in mind CFA has rules about notifying judges in the event of a show cancelation. Judges can not assume a show they are contracted for is canceled. Please keep in touch with your judges either way. If you plan to have a show let your judges know so they can also decide if they feel safe traveling to a show and can judge with a mask or face shield (if it is required). Some airlines are having fare sales as well, so if they can still come it is a good time to get airfares.

Show Rule 16.05 states, In the event a show is canceled after licensing or after contracts have been signed for judges, the show management must immediately notify all judges under contract, the Regional Director and the Central Office. In the case of a show canceled in the International Division, the club must also immediately notify the appropriate International Division Chair.

Communication is the key to prevent misunderstandings and assumptions. If your club has a show in the next 6 months then reach out to your contracted judges. Let them know the status of the event. We all know the situation is fluid and changes regularly but keeping in contact will help ease the uncertainty in these uncertain times.
CFA Breeds and Standards
Jacqui Bennett
CFA Breeds and Standards Committee Chair

Jacqui Bennett has formed a committee consisting of Teresa Keiger, Anne Mathis, Krista Schmitt, Michael Shelton, and Donna Isenberg and the committee has already had two meetings. We believe that by having a diverse team with differing breed expertise, experiences, and skill sets, we can more successfully serve as liaisons to the breed council secretaries and help with breed standards submissions

Breed council secretaries have already begun to submit their proposed ballots. The committee has prepared a submissions guideline document to assist them with these submissions.

report submitted by Mariane Toth

All of our Ambassador Cats and Pet Me Cats hope you and your Cat Family are healthy and safe.?We all miss being at shows and spending time with our cat friends.?All of us are a bit restless because virtual shows simply do not require our attendance.

"What does it take to be a Pet Me cat?" you ask
Owners must be passionate about their cats and CFA.?We must have the desire to reach out and inform the public about our our breed of cat and how important proper care, both at home and visiting your vet, is for all cats and their well-being.?Whether our cats are pedigreed or household pets, they all require the same love and attention.

Kittens/Cats can be CFA registered or household pet cats, however all Pet Me cats need to have an out-going personality and like to be handled and showered with attention.
Pet Me Cats should not be entered into the show without the permission of the show manager.

Pet Me owners must commit to shows within their local area.?There is no required number of shows that a Pet Me Cat has to appear.?Being a Pet Me Cat is really fun for both the owner and their cat, They part of CFA¡¯s commitment to the education of the general population.?And our knowledge can help new cat owners be more responsible cat parents. Contact Marianne Toth for more information about being a Pet Me Cat

The Ambassador Cat Program has been working hard on the 2021 calendar as well as an updated website.?Be sure to contact CFA if you desire to have our new 2021 calendar available are your club¡¯s show.?They are also available if you plan to attend a Pet Fair or other cat related gatherings.

Texas Sunset Commission Finds the Licensed Breeder Program Fails to Meaningfully Protect the Public

The Texas Sunset Commission recommends eliminating the Licensed Breeder Program for failing to meaningfully protect the public in its . The sunset review process is a legislative oversight tool used to periodically evaluate an agency to determine its current relevancy, effectiveness, and efficiency. If an agency remains relevant, the Commission reviews its programs. The Sunset Commission can recommend that the Legislature abolish, continue or combine the functionality of agencies, suggest statutory changes, and it can issue management directives to agencies to address operational concerns. An important goal in estate planning is to have your estate assets managed and distributed according you your intent upon your death or incapacity.?To accomplish this you may have a Last Will and Testament (Will) or a Revocable Living Trust (which may also called an Inter Vivos Trust, a Family Trust, or a Grantor Trust) or both.?However the way in which legal title to you assets is held, or designations you make under certain contracts, may affect how your estate plan is actually carried out.
In general Trusts operate on assets for which legal title is held by the Trust.?The transfer of assets to a Trust is referred to as ¡°funding¡± the Trust.?However, you may have assets that were left out of the Trust during your lifetime.?To guard against this event, your Will may contain a ¡°pour over¡± provision which places assets outside the Trust into the Trust upon your death.?The assets may then be administered according to the terms of your Trust.
You may own assets that go directly to your heirs ¡°by operation of law¡± on your death and bypass your Will or Trust.?Joint tenancy property (sometimes called joint tenancy with right of survivorship) will pass to the surviving joint tenants upon your death regardless of your Will or Trust.?Real estate and bank accounts are often held in joint tenancy.?Assets which let you name a beneficiary such as pensions, retirement plans, IRA¡¯s, annuities, life insurance, payable-on-death or in-trust-for bank accounts, transferable-on-death securities accounts, and certain other assets may also bypass your Will or Trust. You should keep in mind that changes to your Will or Trust do not usually affect distribution of these assets.?Title to your assets and payment designations should be consistent with your intentions and considered in your estate planning.?Make sure you advise your attorney about all of your assets, how title is held, and how beneficiaries are designated, when preparing your estate plan.

I hope all is well with everyone.?Please, if any cat fanciers have come down with this virus notify someone of your circumstance. We need to be in touch with each other if there is a need for assistance.

Well, as we creep into another month of no cat shows and growing Covid-19 virus numbers, we are just waiting and wondering when shows will be back again and when this nightmare is going to be over.?The 1918 Spanish Flu was much more severe than this virus, and it took almost 2 years to end;?this could be our future outlook, at this point.?We need to hold on through this crisis and help each other get by.

Our awards are finished, and the award booklet is almost done. They will soon be sent out.?Art Graafmans has done a wonderful job handling the awards, Carolyn Osier has been handling the photos, and Debi Gomez is setting up the website to handle the sponsorships.

Mask, Cats, and Cat Shows ¨C Potential Problem

Both fellow Tonkinese?breeder, Bonnie Brooks and myself, experienced a problem we thought worth sharing.?We each had an easy-going socialized Tonk freak out when they saw us in a mask.?Not all ¨C just some cats. In my case, the cat was a double regional winner ¨C both kitten and championship.

Mine is a well socialized cat who has flown and traveled widely in our RV and been to many different shows.?In my cat¡¯s case, I was totally shocked.?And this was not being a bit scared and trying to hide from me in a mask.?Her eyes went wild, and she started thrashing around to get away.?It was stark fear, like when a cat shrieks in a show hall and is clearly panicked at an evolutionary level.

We both discussed it and felt we should start wearing a mask occasionally around potential show kittens so they were used to it.?My cat is one I would never have predicted would have such a problem.?So we both felt exposing them to masks when young could head off an unpleasant show problem,?since it seems hard to predict.

Re: Survey Announcement to Share With Your Club

Greetings to all CFA Southern Region Secretaries

As we know all too well, CFA cat shows are currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have no way of knowing when we will be able to return to holding in-person shows again; much of that depends on the course of the pandemic and what restrictions local and state government lift (or don't) as a reaction to it.

However, we are looking forward to and planning for that time when we can gather together again. As a part of that planning, there has been much discussion on whether or not clubs should have the option to bring in a local TICA or ACFA judge for the judging slate. This is not an option which is currently available and requires a CFA Board decision to allow or not. There has been much discussion on various social media platforms as to the pros and cons of this action.

At the request of CFA Southern Region Kenny Currle, I have created a one question survey regarding this action. It includes an area for comments. I'm sending this to all CFA Southern Region secretaries to share with their club members ONLY. Kenny would like input from the region and when we have openly announced surveys of this sort, we had responses from across CFA. That information is great to have, but, is not always reflective of this region.

This question is regarding in-person shows ONLY and is for the duration of the current pandemic only. It is not in reference to online exhibitions. You can find . Please share this with your club members.

CFA News Announcement - Sterling "Trapking" Davis on This Week's Meowy Hour

Meowy Hour - Wednesday, August 26
Wednesday, August 26 at 6pm EDT/3pm PDT for Meowy Hour
Streaming on Facebook Live or via Zoom

Sterling "Trapking" Davis
Sterling ¡°TrapKing¡± Davis is a well-traveled, ex-military, music and cat enthusiast who has always loved entertaining and interacting with people. Since childhood, he was also the only guy in his neighborhood that loved cats.

While taking a break from his rap group, he became involved with his local animal shelter. Soon, he was promoted to an outreach program where he could focus on trap-neuter-return (TNR), the only way to humanely control cat overpopulation.?It was at that point he decided to give up his successful music career and focus on his passion for cats.

In 2017, he started his own nonprofit, , where he focuses on educating, assisting, and doing TNR and community cat management.?Davis¡¯ mission is to change the stereotypes of not only men in cat rescue, but also bridge the gap in communication between black communities and predominantly white animal welfare organizations. He lives and breathes his motto, you don¡¯t lose cool points for compassion.

Today Davis is a sought-after speaker all over the world, speaking at events like Cat Con, Cat Camp, Meow DC and fundraising events for small rescues and shelters across the United States. Sterling hopes to one day travel the country in a recreational vehicle, teaching animal advocates in communities of all sizes how to care for their community cats.

Our featured pedigreed breed this week will be the Lykoi!

PLUS: we toast to ALL cats with the "Awesome Alley Cat Cocktail"
