Portable Battery Charger/Bank/Power Pack

I haven’t received (so haven’t used) it yet. but the NY Times WireCutter always gives positive reviews to stuff from OneWorld, who make (in China, of course) travel plug adapters. I bought one last year before a trip to Scotland. I didn’t really understand it. It’s a quite small plastic box with sliders on one side that protrude different sets of differently-shaped pins to adapt to the A/C receptacles in different countries. The latest iterations build on the notion of wirelesss charging and the triumph of USBc to enable charging one’s iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods simultaneously, and possibly even an iPad or MacBook all from that one little box’s tethering in an a/c socket. My first use of last year’s less capable models was a bit TOO unsophisticated. I assumed that the boxy box ALSO reduced a/c voltage to its universal a/c output on the opposite side of the box. It does nothing of the sort, and the very first time I plugged in something that was not an a/c omnivore (who CARES about the voltage and the Hz), I plunged my Edinburgh hotel room (but, I hope, no others) into complete darkness. However, once I understood that I was still able to combine it’s UK a/c input layout with US a/c cords outputting that 240/50 Hz power to Apple switchable power supplies and a spaghetti of USBc and USB-A charger cords as a single-input Medusa for all my devices. This summer’s travel target (Switzerland) was chosen by my spouse, and we’ve anted up (yes, I DID check a dictionary to figure out the past tense) to purchase this year’s Swiss Army Knife of plug adapters. The new wrinkle is the separate, attachable, charging pod that can also hold a 1,000 mAmp-hr charge for almost anything that Apple makes. Mine is somewhere over the Pacific, I think, hopefully not plunging 6,000 feet in clear air turbulence, and should be in my fists some time next week, but it COULD be the jack of all trades I’ll need in my suitcase. Of course, if all you need is a mobile power reservoir for trips in your home country, you don’t need all that capability. There have been MANY options for that, most clever of which was/is a slot in the frame of AWAY branded carry on luggage, which basically lost its purpose almost upon release, because the FAA banned them (actually confined them to storage solely in checked luggage and even then not nested in their in-frame slots) almost as soon as they were marketed.

I am surprised you got several hours of use out of your UPS. They are normally sized to only give you time to gracefully shut down your devices. And a laser printer, is the biggest hog, if you have one.

I live in Oregon, so it is common during hard freezes to lose power. In the early fall, I make sure I charge up a portable battery pack and buy batteries for the flash lights. Then I stock the pantry with food that needs minimal cooking. Brent On my iPhone Xr On May 25, 2024, at 11:37, Bev in TX <countryone77@...> wrote: |
Does anyone have recommendations for a good portable battery charger for iPhone and iPads? Since I’ve never used one, do you have any tips about using one of these? In an emergency, you might be surprised how many items you have in your home that can give you a charge. I think I counted at least 5 I found. The best one is probably my JBL speaker. I also have a few cheap portable speakers that could give me a charge, a small gifted portable battery pack, and even some hand warmers that also can be a charging unit! (Also a gift). I think even our car battery jump unit can work as a charging unit. It would be nice to have one good charger, but for now these will do.! I just wanted to remind people that, in a pinch, you might have some of these items already. You just need to make sure they’re all charged up if you’re expecting storms! Jackie |
The router is the only thing plugged into the UPS. I originally bought the UPS for my Mac Pro quite a few years ago. The UPS had been unused since the demise of the Mac Pro, and I only started using it again in April. It is a RocketFish 1025VA. I think that’s a Best Buy brand.

开云体育Hi Bev,I use an myCharge powerhub which I bought several years ago. ?It comes with a built in USB C cable and a Lighting cable as well as a USB A port if you want to charge a 3rd device. ?I have used it to charge my phone and iPad on trips where I forgot to bring my regular charger and it has kept my devices powered when I’m traveling and using it extensively. ?It has a fold out wall plug which makes it easy to charge. ?While it is a little bit bigger than a smaller battery charger, it still fits in a backpack or purse and allows multiple chargers. It was $49 at Costco when I bought it. ?I think they have a newer version in the stores now and I believe it is on sale for $49.99 last time I went to Costco. ?I think they have a bigger version on their website which is also good for charging laptops as well. Best, Jay

开云体育My contribution to this confirmation is look for one that is light and not much thicker or bulkier than your phone. Other features that may or may not be important to you: does it have built-in connector (think about how you will use it — for me, that’s a disadvantage because I put it in my pocket or backpack but still want to use my phone), how fast it recharges and what kind of cable it needs to recharge. I had a lovely one that was given to me as a freebie, which unceremoniously died (made by Robot in Indonesia). I used to have a Mophie case that had a battery in it, which was especially good as my phone aged: you could control when it used the battery, and it all used just one cable to charge. But it added weight to the phone. 开云体育P.S. I found the Robot one, which was 10,000mAh, was more than adequate for my needs, which was topping up a charge to make it through a heavy-usage day when I'm on the go a lot.On May 28, 2024, at 11:17, Madeline Koch <madeline@...> wrote: My contribution to this confirmation is look for one that is light and not much thicker or bulkier than your phone. 开云体育Yes, if you expect to use it when away from home, make sure you have the right cable for your phone. If portability is not the main concern and lasting through a power outage is the main use, then I think capacity becomes more important.?Otto

All my charging cables are USB-C on the end towards the charging device, but the first one would require an adapter to fit its USB-A ports. ? The second one appears to be a higher wattage than the first one. ?I didn’t see what wattage the first one had, but its Q&A section mentions that it can’t charge a laptop because it’s less than 30W. ?I didn’t think about charging a laptop, because I mostly use my iPad. ?But my husband uses his a great deal. ?Perhaps we need two of portable battery chargers, one for each of us. -- Bev in TX |
