Re: email provider

Ah, volunteer work, that is why the name is familiar.

I keep mi email accounts down to 3 IMAP. And you should have one, but you don't seem to use it. The one that comes with your Apple ID. And you can have several aliases with each one of those you have. They do want a unique other email account to pair it with, so use your Shaw emails while you can. Or does Shaw offer stand alone email accounts?

I use yahoo, which has had more issues than any other account I've had, for lists. It is free, so I put up with it.

Re: Upgrading to El Capitan

As you pointed out, once converted it is hard to go back. As I pointed out below, there are multiple docs, that once the app is upgraded, their is no easy going back. I have very limited income because of age and health, so I can not go out and just replace my hardware. Due to traveling for work, being laid off and looking for work, and health issues I ended up in Limbo, or as most call it, Lion 10.7.5.

Here are the issues that I have discovered:

iOS 9- syncing problems of Notes to iCloud and OS X 10.7
(stuck here because I can't afford to buy newer devices)
10.7 - constant duplication of Contacts from iCloud
10.8 - Mail reformatted when upgrading from 10.8
- photos have a one-time conversion from iPhoto to Photos.app
10.9 - ???
10.10
10.11- the last OS that my MBP will run
10.12- every upgrade from here on seem to cause syncing issues with my older OS X and iCloud
10.13
10.14
10.15- iCloud not compatible with many browser compatible with 10.7 ?
<<< this is what trigger my wanting to move
- if you convert Reminders to 10.5, then they will only work with 10.15 & iOS 13?
(luckily, I don't use Reminders, listing for others)
- I've noticed an uptick in compatibility or long conversion times, where data goes missing, stumping Apple senior techs. Music, photos, calendars and contacts, all seemingly indirectly related to updating the iCloud servers.

Somewhere along the line Boot Camp lost the ability to use Windows XP, and for the few times I need to boot into it, I certainly do not want to lay out $100, that I don't have. I would much rather eat. Boot Camp I understand will not boot from an external drive by design.?

Many of the conversions or corrective actions seem to be most easily performed at the point of conflict, thereby suggesting that a step by step upgrade might be easier than one giant leap.

I was originally thinking of an external drive with a clean install to avoid dragging over all the gathered detritus from migrations since the original OS, 10.5, like a ghost iDisk, and MobleMe Prefs, and long abandoned 3rd party apps. But having to reinstall all my 3rd party apps that I still use, if I can find all the registration numbers. And converting all the accompanying docs, seems like it will be a chore, if it is possible after the fact.

I appreciate that Dan, came forward to say he does not remember. That is why I asked people to start by scratching their grey matter. The list above, has been compiled from reading 4 Apple related lists, with lots of contributions by all the great members with high tech skills, and my own personal observations. I know that there are always complaints of incompatibility whenever there is a major upgrade, that are often caused by people jumping in without a plan or preparation. Many that are either easily fixed or just plain wrong. I am just trying to make a plan.

Vince, you are one of our assets, but can you show your work or give reference to you comment? From real life experience as documented in 4 Apple related lists, I have seen the issues listed above, many with some sort of solution if taken one at a time.

I am asking if anyone has seen have seen otherwise??

All this and it still needs to sync with iOS 9.3.5 & .6, since those are the last OSes for my other devices. This is why I was hoping to install a clean copy on an external to check this out, to check compatibility for syncing with these devices.

The way Apple Mail works for me on?Macs, as well as iPads and iPhones, is that by default, it quotes the entire?message to which I am replying, from which I then delete the irrelevant parts.
Or, of course, highlighting part of a long message, then replying, with quote just the highlighted part.

A digest, of course, will be seen by Mail as a single long message.

Yes, it works somewhat differently on a Mac.

Using iPad or iPhone, one would usually HIGHLIGHT using your finger on a portion of the text you want to quote, then expand the upper left and lower right to encompass the entire text that you want to quote then hit reply. Then type your comment above the quoted material. If you just hit reply, then it will quote the entire previous post.

Generally speaking, iOS apps have always been a simplified subset of the Mac apps.

I apologize for my former reply as I didn¡¯t understand that you were using iOS mail as opposed to Mac mail.

Cat hair can simply be brushed off of the 3M Mousing Surface, since the surface it is hard and smooth. And every now and then you can use Windex or Fantastik or something to clean the surface so that there is no dirt or grease build up. So the problem that most mouse pads have with getting icky over time is easily avoided.
