That would be after 10.13. I don't see the value in the new icon, whereas?the old one told you at a glance which keyboard you have selected (right way up or not ;) ).?

Rick, folks will try to help but it helps them to provide some
information.

Which model iMac?

How much free drive space?

How much RAM?

What did your Wyfe do to prepare, do maintenance, on her iMac for
Catalina?
-Delete old cache files?
-Boot in Safe Disk Mode?
-Boot in Recovery and run First Aid on boot drive??

What is the difficulty in downloading? Can you be specific? Download
quits before finishing? Slow??

Apparently the App Store has updated Microsoft applications for

Would someone guide me through a seamless process to install?

Any advice would truly be appreciated.

Brent, I did attach the Input menu icon from Catalina. It didn't make
it through. Not sure why it didn't.

In your smaller screen capture, the US flag is the Input menu from an
older OS X. The flag is for the selected or language keyboard. For
example, if you were running a French OS X it would be a French
Tricolor. You can have multiple language keyboards and just pick them
to switch between them.

In your larger Input menu icon screen cap, I think that is the icon
from the OS X Mojave or High Sierra. It has the little star in it.

The OS X Catalina input menu icon is the same as Mojave but without the
little star.

I'll try the attachment again.

Tom, at this point of the struggle, why don't you reformat your drive

Now I think it's not ignoring me, it's answering my query with

1. Armed with 5 GB of new storage from deleting caches, I was able to
run Onyx.
2. I deleted logs and checked for snapshots (which OnyX will do).
Guess what? No snapshots! Huh?
3. I quit OnyX and checked storage available in About this Mac,
thinking it would have increased somewhat from 5 GB. What a shock: I
now had MBs instead of GBs. What happened to it while I was running
OnyX? I have no idea.
4. Now I'm back to not being able to run apps. Why are there no
snapshots? Might it have to do with the fact that I turned off Time
Machine yesterday and ejected, disconnected and turned off the TM
backup drive?

Anyway, I don't know where to go now. I removed over 60 GBs from the
drive, cleaned out caches and logs, found no snapshots, and have too
little memory (again) to run apps. My computer is crawling. I'll
continue to go through the suggestions I've received, doing whatever
I can with nearly zero storage memory and watching a spinning
beachball by the hour, but the takeaway is that 2/3rds of my 250 GB
HD is System files and my computer is circling the drain. What a

Jim and everybody,

Emoji & Symbols on the Input menu shows font variations and font
names. But you will need to expand the window. Click the Input menu
icon at top right inside the Emoji & Symbols window (to right of the
Search box).

In the column at far right you will see several sub boxes. The
character name at top (with Add to Favorites), then the Related
Characters box, below that (may have to scroll down) the Font Variation
box.

Folks should be aware of the Settings menu - the gear icon at top
left. You can turn on a slew of additional characters with the
Customize List command. Character sets like:

Arrows ? ? ? ?? ?
Box Drawing
Braille Patterns
Bullets/Stars ¡ñ ? ? ?? ? ??
Currency Symbols $ € ? ? ?
Digits
Dingbats
Divination Symbols
Duployan (whatever that is???)
Emoji
Enclosed Characters
Geometrical Shapes
Letterlike Symbols
Math Symbols ¡Á - ¡Þ ¨R
Musical Symbols ? ? ?
Technical Symbols ? ?? ?? ?

And many more.

The Latin set is very useful because it includes descriptor of all of
those symbols like ? (Latin Capital Letter A with Acute).

I keep a lot of attachments. I move some of them to another folder, and trash some immediately. The rest I like to find safe in the Attachments folder till I finally get around to dealing with them. I'd hate to dig through my trash before emptying it to make sure there's nothing valuable there.

Thanks, though, for the reminder.
