There is. Tap twice quickly on the SHIFT KEY. YOU SHOULD SEE A LOCK SYMBOL BOTTOM RIGHT.

开云体育My daily routine frequently includes spending time at a medical care facility where the “guest” network is “open” (no encryption) but uses a common software device to provide internet access after my laptop connects to its SSID: pasting a dialog on the screen that requires a specific input before the user actually obtains internet access through the open network. The macOS uses a “captive agent” process to deal with this dialog box. It’s a common mechanism for providing access to a non-secured “guest” network at hotels, coffee shops, retail outlets, etc.Each time I encounter one of these networks I must reboot my Mac in order for my Mac to be able to post that dialog box to my display. That works every time, but having to reboot is a nuisance. Once I do what’s required in the “captive agent” dialog, my Mac has no trouble logging back in to the open network so long as I’ve not taken the computer to another location where I connect to a secured network (for example, if I turn off WiFi, or allow the Mac to go to sleep, etc.). The input into the “captive agent” dialog box is created by the IT staff managing the open network. It may require just clicking a button in a dialog box, or it may require text or numeric input. In some cases, it’s called a password, but typically the establishment pastes that password in a prominent location available to all its customers My iOS and iPadOS devices have no difficulty connecting to any of the open networks where my Mac cannot do so without a reboot, but the connection does require the input into the captive agent dialog. The difference seems to be that iOS has no trouble providing the dialog box to the user. I’ve been working with Apple Support on this issue. It’s a well known problem that’s been discussed in the Apple Support Communities fora and on Tidbits. Apparently, there’s no universally effective solution. What I don’t know is how common the problem is. So, I’d like to ask a question: are there people here who don’t need to reboot their Macs to obtain internet access via the non-secured guest network provided by a hotel, retail or health care establishment? Are there others reading this who DO have the problem? I’ve not checked the list rules, but if there’s a rule that forbids taking polls, I’d be happy to compile data from off-list replies. I think that if users see others replying to my question, I’d welcome subsequent replies addressed directly to me rather than to the list. Apple support tell me that they’re aware of the issue, and that configuring a specific network location may help, but that some login items may confound attempts to connect to such networks, so the support person had me disable automatic login to Dropbox. I’ll find out later today if that really has helped. I’ve also reset non-volatile RAM and the SMC on my MacBook Pro. The problem existed under Mojave on my previous MacBook Pro and persists under Catalina on my new 16” MacBook Pro. The support person has suggested running MalwareBytes if what we’ve done so far doesn’t help. One problem is that my two usual test environments (my home LAN with an 802.11ac Apple router and the medical care facility ?are 50 miles apart, and I know that when I arrive at the medical care facility I can obtain durable internet access just by rebooting. However, my curiosity is whetted by being told I shouldn’t have to do this. I can probably shuttle between my home and a coffee shop in my rural community to test/retest. So, does everybody need to reboot their Macs to get internet access on open networks? Does NO ONE else need to do this? Has anyone who HAD this problem resolved it? Thanks so much,

Security update does not install

I got from the App Store a security update (061-64349) for my MacBook Air 7.2 under MacOS 10.13.6. When the download had finished, my Mac tried to start up but got stuck on a black screen. There was a cursor and it moved in response to my trackpad, but nothing else. A forced shutdown was the only way out. I suspected that the download had been corrupted in some way, so I trashed the update files and got a new download. Same problem. I work around it by forcing a shutdown and canceling the "open applications" dialog on startup. Then when the usual "install update" message appears, I postpone it to the next day.? Has anybody seen this before?

Recommend: Take Control Books (Apple Mail)

开云体育A few people on here recommended that I get one of the Take Control Books in order to learn more about Apple Mail. So, I have, and I want to thank those people. This is EXACTLY what I’m looking for.So far, this book is easy to read but gives a ton of information in a very understandable format, even for those of us who are not very technically minded. It also does not bother with the basics that we already know (such as how to compose a new email), but goes right into tips, tricks, and features that are a little more obscure. And even includes a section on which third-party apps can be used to beef up Mail's capability. I am reading it on my Kindle, which means I can read it anywhere, or bring the Kindle over to my iMac where the text will not interfere with trying something out on the iMac screen. What did work was doing it from the Applications folder as a right-click. Just dragging didn’t do it. So thanks, all. One word on iPhone always defaults to all letter capitalization
There’s a word that I type in my iPhone texts quite frequently that always defaults to all of the letters capitalizing. Actually it’s a city so the first letter only should be capitalized.

I’ve tried keyboard reset on the iPhone, but it still defaults to capitalizing the whole word. Granted this is just a minor irritation, but I do use this word a lot and I’m always having to backtrack to change it.
?
Any ideas?

Brother are usually VERY GOOD with customer support. Even on out of warranty printers and consumables.

开云体育I usually use “TrashMe” myself to get rid of everything. Good thing is, it will also get rid of locked files after you reboot.There are others out there including AppCleaner, AppTrap, AppDelete & AppZapper. Mostly, they remove the application and the supporting files, sometimes requiring a reboot. My desire to keep a clean working system really forces me to get rid of everything to do with a program I no longer want. YMMV. Christopher

开云体育Hi Denver Dan,If you’re using FireFox, you really should be using the AdBlock Plus extension. There are multiples available but I have always found this one (??) the best! They also make the same extension for most browsers out there. Christopher

My feeling is that passing this on to Brother wouldn't be very useful. ?The printer was bought almost 3 years ago – long since out of warranty. ?Maybe i'll give it a try anyway. ?They may have seen the problem before and know something to do. 开云体育Were you given a message that you could not kill them, or did it simply not let you drag it there? Are you in an administrator account? Conceivably if you are it will ask for a password to do it. If in a “peon” account then maybe it just won’t let you do it. A great app that might help (which I have not used for ages, so maybe won’t work on new OS versions) is Trash It. Sometimes that works. Then there is the “folder from hell” that sometimes works. Can you move these files elsewhere, even if you cannot trash them? Make a new folder on your desktop. Then, somewhere else, other than your Desktop, create another folder with exactly the same name. Put the files you want to kill in the one on the desktop. Then move the other folder to the desktop. You will get a message that says that a file of that name already exists, and asks if you want to replace it or rename, etc. You want to replace it, which will delete the old folder. N.B. I’ve never tried this, but supposedly it works.
