Re: Finding stuff

Personally, I like Finder searches, so I haven’t found a need yet for 3rd party search apps. ?If you know what you are doing, Finder searches can be very complex. ?

In 16 years I’ve only had to manually reindex my drive once. ?Perhaps I’m just lucky that it was that infrequent. ?I don’t know. ?That was back when my boot drive was an HDD, so yes it was slow. ?But I ran it overnight, so it didn’t impact me very much. ?System upgrades can cause a lot of reindexing, but if you do them later in the day, then it can again take place overnight,

Rather than just mentioning reindexing, I posted that article’s link, because it includes two (2) other possible solutions to the problem. ?

BTW, I posted it before Jim’s post; I wouldn’t have done so after his.

Re: hotmail issues

The problem I described is tied to Hotmail / Outlook.com accounts. It seems many were attracted?to the freeware Hotmail accounts and later Outlook.com accounts. Primarily they were free and reliable. Many forgot when they input personal information to register the account. Later, should a disruption occur (e.g., lost password, change in relationship status, etc.) the only information Microsoft has to validate your account is the information you provided. For some, that information may be quite old. Microsoft has taken so many hits for security, you either do it their way?or you lose the accounts.?

These steps will help guide you when filling out the account recovery form.
support.microsoft.com
TBH, gmail is still the best freeware option. Most I recommend either keep your information current or pay for email. That way, you have security and there's usually someone you can communicate?with if you have a problem.?

At my age, I'm convinced?that not much that is free is usually not worth it.

Luckily for me, I don’t have Les’s problem, but I’m curious. Are you saying that if one is using Outlook as one’s mail client but for some reason loses the ability to verify the account with MS, that one will lose his/her email repository. Is it at least possible to retain it, searchable, on one’s own device(s)?

Thank you for the response, I appreciate the suggestions.?

I can no longer receive emails throuhg the Apple Mail app only through a web browser. I get no error messages.

My main issue in updating the OS is that ?I need to run 32 bit applications - as a UK pensioner I cannot afford to replace my machine and all my main programmes - Quark, Indesign, Photoshop, etc – so I am limited to one more upgrade to 10.14 which I understand would not be enough to hep the mail issues.

I guess I have to hope Santa will bring a new machine and all the apps I need!

But thank you for your thoughts

Why not update the 2015 to Monterey? I have a MBA 2015 that runs Monterey well. You may experience less browser related issues.

I also run an Outlook.com account in Outlook 365 and Apple Mail on the 2015 with no problem. I can also run the latest versions of Brave and other browsers should I need to view my mail on the web.

I’m guessing you’re receiving the Hotmail through the Apple mail app? Are you receiving any error messages?

Thanks Bev. ?I thought that might be it. ?But it’s really annoying that you have to do the updates to get something as basic as this to keep working. ?Some of us don’t want to update until apps we use have been updated and work reliably with new OS versions. ?

I think I have solved my problem.

I used a 3rd-party tool to delete the Spotlight index, and let it re-index itself overnight.

I just tried a few recent failed searches, and now they work.

Problem solved

I finally contacted Apple about the problem I was having with my new mac since the upgrade.? It took 6 techs on the chat platform, two days, and over 4 hours. Everything they tried did NOT work. Finally the last tech said he would have someone call, and when that wonderful man in Austin called and got into my computer..Voila..It was fixed. it was just where i new the problem was ..in the lock screen..the area that would give hte option for no password required was grayed out. One of the techs even had me set up the iphone mirroring so I could undo it. While the man was on the phone, I gave Apple permission to go into my computer. I followed the reds arrow, and quickly, it was done..and I am now a happy camper. ..and my computer doesn't ask for the password when coming out of sleep mode

as for the other thing that the keyboard shortcut for sleep doesn't work, I can live with that. Who knows, perhaps the next upgrade, if i am brave enough to do it, might just fix that

Jeannie

Re: Sequoia annoyance

It's to do with the iphone mirroring app.
When I initially set it up, i did not want to be asked each time to authenticate. That option somehow triggered the mac to ask for password after sleeping, screen saving etc..... a huge annoyance. So I had to reconnect the app then disable that choice and it was fixed.
