Re: Finder Not Responding
Jim, Yes, that is the case unless you have file vault activated. File vault causes the Mac to take?over 5 min to boot. This isn't a problem on a normal work day but when you're on call the person calling you gets impatient waiting for your Mac to boot. I usually shutdown my Mac on Friday's since unless I'm on call I don't need to use it on the weekends.? I do agree that they shouldn't be able to alter the OS in the recovery partition.? ~~Gijzette On Mon, Dec 4, 2023 at 11:57?AM Jim Saklad via <jimdoc=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Finder Not Responding
Paul, Yes, holding the power button until I see more options. Then pressing the shift key while having over options but never get the "Continue in Safe Mode" dialog. Very strange.? I ran EntrCheck?Pro and the major issues pointed out were unsigned file. These are files my company installed such as jamf profiles and cyberark security software. Gatekeeper and Apple security disabled. I'm not allowed to turn these on. Instead company installed cyberark, Microsoft defender (yes, I know) and Crowdstrike Falcon.? Here is what the report has for Major & Minor Major Issues: Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention. Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed that could be malicious and should be reviewed. Gatekeeper disabled - Gatekeeper security protection is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection. Apple security disabled - Apple security software is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection. Minor Issues: These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems or opportunities for improvement. System extensions installed - This computer has system extensions installed. System extensions can be difficult to uninstall. No Time Machine backup - Time Machine backup not found. Configuration profiles found - This computer may have configuration profiles installed. Heavy RAM usage - Apps are using a large amount of RAM. Apps crashing - There have been numerous app crashes. Apps with heavy CPU usage - There have been numerous cases of apps with heavy CPU usage. Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. These files could be old, incompatible, and cause problems. They should be reviewed. System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background. Limited permissions - More information may be available with Full Disk Access. Kernel extensions present - This computer has kernel extensions that may not work in the future. Sharing enabled - This computer has sharing services enabled that could be a security risk.? Let me know if there's anything else in the report you want to see. I'm not sure I can attach the report here.? ~~Gijzette On Mon, Dec 4, 2023 at 11:55?AM Paul via <paul=[email protected]> wrote:

Recommendations for photo duplicates finder app...
Looking for recommendations for good file duplicate finders that you have experience with...
Hoping for some that don't just look at filenames but ones that go a bit deeper, i.e. comparing photograph EXIF info, etc.... #Tod: anything you can recommend for photos, music and video? There are dozens in the AppStore but I'm looking for recommendations for ones you've used yourself... Intego has one in the AppStore but it's a bit outdated (2016), and Intego does not even list it on their website anymore. Thanks, Randy for the link to their free virus scanner... bottom of page shows other app under their banner... Duplicate Zapper But if it's a (good) recommended one, it's only 99?! – perhaps worth spending the $1.35 CAD on it. and am trying out DupeGuru – but that's a bit old too. Not concerned if apps are old, as long as they are good at what they're for. |

Randy, I get that message. Please tell me what I need to do. I’ve got a new 2T SSD with 1.76T available in my iMac running Mojave 10.14.6. I’ve got 24GB of RAM.

The company probably CAN NOT alter stuff there, and certainly SHOULD NOT. So an OS repair from a Recovery System boot should be fine. 2. This machine should only take maybe 20 seconds to go from power-on/cold boot to the login screen, so I would (and for my M1 Mac, I *do*) shut it down overnight, rather than just putting it to sleep. It may *need* to do some of the housekeeping that happens during the machine start-up. -- Jim Saklad jimdoc@... |

Finder Not Responding
I have a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro that is issued to me by my company. A couple of weeks ago finder started giving me issues. I get the spinning beach ball and have to force quit finder. When I go into the force quit selection it shows finder is not responding.? I attempted to boot into safe mode to see if that resolved the?issue, using the instructions on Apple's support page for the M1, but I was unable to get into safe mode. I gave up after 3 tries. This was on Thursday evening and after the Mac booted up finder worked fine all day Friday. I put my Mac to sleep Friday evening, used it for a few minutes on Sunday then put it back to sleep. Today, finder is back to the spinning beach ball and I have to force quit it.? I use finder multiple times throughout the day so this is very frustrating. If this was my personal Mac I would perform an OS repair. Since this is not my personal Mac I'm not sure what the company has installed that will be uninstalled by doing an OS repair.? Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try? Any idea what my company could've changed to prevent me from booting into safe mode? Thanks! ~~Gijzette |

In every single case so far, what that error message is telling you isn’t what it seems on its face. Rather than not having enough RAM, the user always turns out to have a rotating disk hard drive that is too full and/or too fragmented. What the message is telling you is that there is no longer enough free *contiguous* drive space for your application to run properly. There is no space for your application to write scratch, virtual memory, database, etc. meta data to disk. How big is your hard drive and how full is it? Generally the problem occurs when your drive is approaching 80% full, but this is only a very rough rule of thumb. I’ve seen it happen with drives that are are closer to 60% full and very fragmented, and I’ve seen drives having no problem that are well over 80% full because they have very low fragmentation. The solution is to offload a bunch of data and then to defragment your hard drive. OR, to get a new, bigger, internal hard drive. The above guidance is quite a bit different if you instead have an SSD. If that’s the case, let me know and I can tell you what to do for an SSD. __________________________________________________ Randy B. I don’t know why that’s happening, but you might get some clue by running the application “Activity Monitor” from your Applications>Utilities folder.

This is quite a jump in operating systems. Under Sierra I have a lot of archived email set up in AppleMail which I have filtered into many mailboxes. Can I expect all the content in AppleMail to transfer over to Ventura faithfully with the Rules I set up intact? The mail database seems to be up-converted every time macOS undergoes a major upgrade. When I started using iPhone, and switched to IMAP for my mail, I also switched to iCloud as my mail server. I gradually got almost all of my inbox-sorting rules set up ON the server, which pretty much guarantees that they survive annual macOS upgrade transitions. -- Jim Saklad jimdoc@... |
Re: Using Migration Assistant ? Sierra to Ventura
There are a couple of convertors buried in some of the “name change” upgrades. Mail is one of the apps that gets affected. It is best to upgrade one major upgrade at a time. Or do a clean install, and chance losing your rules.

开云体育Thank you Jim & Paul for your responses. I downloaded Go64 and have been receiving the following prompt: "No applications were found on Macintosh HD. Spotlight may be disabled on this disk. If it is, please go to your Spotlight settings in System Preferences and change the Privacy settings to allow it to be searched.” I have gone to Spotlight settings - but still get the message. I have added Applications folder to Privacy list then removed it - still get the message above. Apparently I’m missing something. —Tony Troiano—
