Re: it’s like a horror movie: my system files have eaten up my boot drive!

Thanks so much for all the great answers. Both upper-level AppleCare specialists I spoke with told me the only solution would be to do a clean install and bring everything over one item at a time. I'd rather eat worms. Thanks to all your answers I now have hope. I'm going through your suggestions one at a time. ?By erasing caches in the Library I've picked up 5 GB of storage, up from 8 MB! It's not much but it enabled me to open some apps. Other apps still crash due to the small amount of storage memory, such as Omnisweep, which I hoped might tell me about my biggest files. Someone suggested Whatsize and Daisy-Disk. I'll try them next. I've installed OnyX, but I don't think I have enough storage for it to run yet.

I've removed and turned off my Time Machine drive and instructed TM to stop making backups. As a result, the System files on my HD have finally stopped growing! So next, Dan, I'm trying to get a list of snapshots on my HD. I think that would be very important. But I've never used Terminal before and I don't speak a word of Unix, so your command isn't working. Here's what happens:

MacBook-Pro:~ tomkirshbaum$ sudo tmutil listlocalsnapshots/

Password:

Usage: tmutil listlocalsnapshots <mount_point>

MacBook-Pro:~ tomkirshbaum$?

It looks to me as though Usage is a formatting suggestion, then Terminal reverts to the beginning, inviting me to try again. Yes? But I have no idea what to do with <mount_point>. Can you or someone help me get this command working? That would be a huge positive step. Thanks one and all.
Tom

Switching on the Mini one day and it was taking ages to boot with a lot of disk activity on the LaCie. It was booting from the clone and not the SSD. I let it finish booting and checked which startup disk was enabled. It was the correct disk. Restarted and it booted correctly and did so for the next few days. Then it did it again. So far it has booted from the clone 3 times at random intervals. I could always startup with the Option key but this is not ideal. Or I could disconnect the LaCie and reconnect after booting. This also is not ideal. Any ideas anyone?
I assume that you are turning your external hard drive on and off manually, correct?

If so, it may simply be a timing issue. Try not switching your external hard drive on until your Mac is already a few seconds into startup.

That is possible. Typically when I’m using the laptop away from its usual locations, when I finish using it I’ll just slip it into my laptop carrying case and leave. Once or twice (at least) I’ve arrived somewhere else, removed it from its case, and found it very warm with almost no battery charge remaining. However, that’s very infrequent, and when I witnessed multiple restarts yesterday the computer was not unduly warm at any time.

I’ve not yet downloaded iStat Menus but plan to do so and monitor it to see if it provides some clues.

Thanks for suggesting this as a possible cause.

"Trust This Computer?"

Hi all,

I'm in a bad spot … on the road, no wifi, and a dying iPhone battery. When I plug my iPhone X (running iOS 13.1.3) into my MacBook Pro (running Mojave 10.14.6) using the USB-to-Lightning cable that came with my phone and charges it every night, I get the usual "Trust This Computer?" message with options to Trust or Don't Trust it. The problem is, that message isn't on the screen long enough to click a button before it disappears. It then comes back and repeats the cycle 9 times, after which the phone does not indicate it's receiving a charge.

Any quick ideas? Thanks!
Dane

I recently tried to do a security update that failed, and the Recovery Partition was not even bootable (I had previously upgraded to Sierra some time ago). I ended up having to wipe and restore from a TimeMachine backup (done just before update attempt) as my so-called bootable clone turned out to not be bootable either! I wrote about Jim's signature graphic:
it's an embedded graphic that gets deleted when I delete the message in Eudora.
Attachments, however, stay in the attachments folder till I move or delete them.

Barry responded:
Eudora? Still? What OS are you running?
Snow Leopard with Eudora (POP) email on my old iMac in my basement office. When I'm upstairs on my newer iMac with High Sierra, I use screen sharing to check my Eudora email. For three of my many email accounts I have Eudora set to leave messages on the server till I decide to delete them, so I can access those messages anywhere with webmail. And in webmail, attachments and embedded images both disappear when I delete messages, as I sometimes do before downloading to Eudora.

I wish this arrangement could last forever!

I find it much easier to just scroll down in email, with human readable info. I am not opposed to randomly located info, after all I am certified for material requirement planning, but it still gives human readable info to a randomly selected location.

I’m sure there are, and you could search the ‘net... I run iStat menus myself, and assume(d) that the default parameters are either read from the Mac, or the developer knows what they are for all the macs that they support.
Temperature readings are simply just that - read from the sensors that have communication features.
I find it useful to have this app, and I keep my temp readings in the uppermost Finder bar. FWIW I only monitor 2 sensors on my Mac Pro: the Northbridge heatsink and the diode (running at 48 and 57°C) as these are problematic in the 2008-2010 models. (Heatsink separation due to broken nylon connectors is the issue.)

I had just replaced the RAM sticks with 16MB that have heat sinks, and my temperatures ramped up 15° (to about 70°C) to the point where my Mac would shut down without warning... so I used the custom settings feature of iStat to increase various fan speeds; now temperatures are actually further down than they had been before the RAM upgrade... Yes, I did vacuum out all dust I could see...

...so for anyone with high temps, at least it‘s a stop-gap method to increase fan circulation if you can’t get around to de-dusting the computer just yet... and it does let you know all kinds of other stats too...

Cheers
JR
---

Are there established norms and “uh oh” values for these parameters? My assumption is that if these are fine, it’s unlikely that dust collecting inside the machine is not the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I may have just solved my own problem. I copied the 30 pis that were in the width, and pasted them into a new folder, and all was well.

I guess that in the future when I make a delicate, I will copy it over, rather than dragging it, although I can not understand why this would happen after years of doing it by dragging the copy.
