Yes, we have gone with the free option. Some groups have paid the (previous) $110 for a wholesale transfer. Others still have used a (Windows-only) app to transfer their Yahoo web content.

My Power mac keeps restarting #Mac #Hardware

ihor43us

The machine is from 2008, but it does all I need it to do. However, I fear that the fans are not what they used to be and probably need replacing. If I use it for any length of time it resets. If I leave it with the log on page after it resets, in a few hours it resets again. it makes a horrible noise when booting. I think it is the fan but I am open to suggestions.

The question is : does anyone know where I can purchase replacement fans for this old but virile computer? I really do not want to part with it. Call me silly, but it has been through a lot with me and I do not want to just discard it when it can still perform.

BTW, I am on El Capitain since that is the last OS version that I can download.

Thanks

Re: Cost of move to groups.io? #MacSupportCentral

That is still cheaper than L-Soft. groups.io figures out to about $20/ month. If everyone would agree to a buck a month that would more than cover the cost. Just do a annual $12 fee to each user. Most of us should be able to afford that.

How many external drives do you have??
Is it 1 with photos on it + 1 with Time Machine?

How many new photos do you bring in every week (# of images, or GB) (i.e., does the photos drive change a lot in any given period of time?)

I keep my recent/active photos on my main drive, which is continually backed up with Time Machine, and archive all my older photos on an external volume – presently about 218 GB of old photos. Since that archive doesn’t change very often, I don’t use Time Machine to back it up, but periodically make an exact copy of that volume to a similar partition on a second external drive.

How many GB of your internal, boot, HD are in use?
How big is the Time Machine drive or partition?
Do you want to consider having a bootable clone backup?

By default, Time Machine should try to backup EVERY partition of EVERY drive in or connected to your computer.
It should have at LEAST 2 times the space as all the data being backed up occupies.

That said, it is possible to EXCLUDE particular volumes if you wish.
It if is indeed NOT backing up your main internal drive, (the SSD), the SSD must at some point have been added to this exclusion list.

Open System Preferences
Click on Time Machine
Click the lock and enter your password
Click on Options in the lower right
You should see listed any volumes excluded from backups
You can add or subtract volumes using the + and - signs

Re: Back up of my Mac HD #Backup

I was going to wait until at least 10.15.01. However, after careful consideration after reading a couple of weeks of posts, I did it. No problems at all. I didn’t use any of the 3 32 bit programs that were on my drive and just deleted them. No loss there. Some folks this might be an issue.

The ONLY suggestion that I would have for you would to BACKUP to a BOOTABLE clone of where you are at immediately before the upgrade. CCC has been updated to work with Catalina. Not everyone is as fortunate as I am and not had any issues requiring a backup.

Have fun!

Re: Upgrading a 2017 iMac's RAM and storage (was Re: [macsupportcentral] Question for SEE Finance users?) #Upgrading

If any of you have done a rotating platter to SATA SSD upgrade, how?would you characterize the performance boost?

I've done that with a MacBook Pro. The improvement in speed is around?x6 (yes, times six) in both boot times and program loading. This is with a?Samsung 840 Pro. Of course, tasks that are CPU-bound don't speed up…?

Years ago I replaced a 320 or 500 GB HDD in a previous (maybe 2009) MBPro with a 500 GB SATA SSD from OWC.

Really impressive speedup, but I don’t remember the numbers. Probably like Otto’s results.

When I moved to my present MBPro (late 2013), I swapped those drives back, but left the SSD in the external case, because the newer laptop came with a 500 GB blade-type SSD.

I’m now thinking of upgrading this blade-SSD to either 1 or 2 TB, and putting the original equipment 500 GB one in an external case.

Sort of your operation, but on a laptop. Simpler.

I may partition the SATA-SSD into either a native Windows boot version or install the deeply discounted version of Parallels that OWC sells there along with Mojave.

I’m assuming that if I install a SATA 2.5” form factor SSD where the rotating platter drive is now, the iMac will recognize it as bootable.
Jim Robertson

Are you getting an external drive case in the package, to put your existing HDD in?

Because you could put the new SATA SSD in there, connect it up, clone your fusion drive to it, test it by trying to boot from it, and only then undertake iMac surgery to switch the drives.

And you would be left with a terabyte HDD in an external box as well.
