Mine is a 2012, and working fine.
Have you tried reinstalling the OS? If the HDD is failing, fitting an SSD will transform it.

I¡¯m looking at a replacement - current model on the apple website; retail $1499.? If I try to trade the old one in [cosmetics OK, only issue is that while it WILL boot the OS, it usually takes several tries. It also has 3rd party [OWC] SSD and added memory.
If it flunks the trade in process, do they send it back or offer me a lower price alternative?? I would donate the machine to a nonprofit with someone with some tech smarts who could maybe have it repaired.
