Tim, each Mac has a different answer. I have kept Activity Monitor's CPU History open in the bottom left corner of all my Macs for about the last 20 years. Then things start to slow or freeze, my ey glances down there, and I see a lot of red. To figure out what is causing that, I open the main window.? I also keep Hardware Monitor, and app like iStat, but older, open since heat is often an issue with laptops.
