Re: Trying to build kicad in windows
Brian Sidebotham
kicad-winbuilder is a win32 project. It should NOT be run in msys under sh, it should be run under a standard windows cmd.exe shell.

Start a standard shell and use this shell to run kicad-winbuilder. Delete all files except the KiCad-Winbuilder.cmake script in your directory before running now that you've run it under msys.

gEDA-PCB to Pcbnew translator
I've uploaded a gEDA to Pcbnew file translator (please see Files > Pcbnew file utilities > gEDA2Pcbnew.zip). Having had success translating PCB file projects available from DJ Delorie and others, its now time to send it to other desktops.
I invite your comments as well as any bug reports. Enjoy! Roger Marin Portland, Oregon |

Autofocus in the PCBNew search box
Hey guys,
I'm either too stupid to get on the developer's list or not everyone is supposed to spam that mailing list with great ideas. Anyway, I think a while ago on the nightly builds the autofocus on the text box in the search box in PCBNew (invoked with Ctrl-F) got lost. It was really great and fast to type Ctrl-F and then immediately start typing something like 'C6'. But the autofocus somehow got lost so now I type Ctrl-F, move my mouse over the text box, click and then start writing. Is there any way this could be changed back? That would be so great and I guess it's maybe like two lines of code? Thanks for reading!! |

Original poster needs to give the real location. What group, what folder, what file name. The posted link is temporary and was invalid within minutes of being posted.

Fat Target Problem
I'm doing a small pilot project board to learn and prove the process. When I print the board to check it and the layers, so of the layers have targets with very fat lines. This renders them useless as targets.
This PDF illustrates the probelm starting on page 2. I don't know what page 1 is. Also, when printing all layers on seperate pages, how do I get labels that indicate what they are? Do I need to manually place identifying test on all layers? TIA Oz (Oz - in DFW) |

you will find here your HE10-16.lib component for eeschema : For pcbnew, just use a standard HE10-16 footprint (right angle, or straight, as you need). Don't attempt to built components with more than 26 units ! This feature is not yet supported by Kicad (see link above). regards, Charles. --- In kicad-users@..., Christian Mange <mangec@...> wrote:

Re: Problem drawing rectangle in Libedit when creating a new part.
Andy Eskelson
It's just a slightly different drawing method...
select the rectangle tool click ONCE (do not press and hole) at the first point. move mouse (no buttons pressed) to where you want the end point to be, then click again. Problem drawing rectangle in Libedit when creating a new part.
richard
OK, first off I am very new to using KiCad, so a bit of patience would be appreciated as I wander through the newbie stage of my experience.
I am trying to add a part to a library I have started for an item I buy from a third party and have been following the tutorial that comes with KiCad as part of that process. I get into the new part state easily enough and have added 3 pins for my component, but when I go to draw a rectangle for the item I'm having a problem. After selecting the 'draw rectangle' icon in the left tool panel I can draw the rectangle, but cannot get it to stick. If I move the mouse at all after completing the shape the program is acting like it is a selector to move the pins and labels around, even though the pins go outside of the rectangle, and will not stop doing that until I right click and select End Tool or hit escape - after which the rectangle disappears. Obviously I am missing something simple, so any assistance much appreciated at this point. Thanks, R. Mycroft |
Re: eeschema and hardware
Andy Eskelson
There are a couple of ways to think about this one.
The brute force method is to use single pin connectors. Then on pcbnew you will have to carefully place them. It can be done but it's a lot of hard work. A better way is to use a n-pin connector in eeschema, but rather than connect the circuit directly to it via wires use labels. Label the pins as needed, then where you would normally use a pin on the circuit, use a label then the connection will be automatically made. The correct module can then be used in pcbnew and everything is a lot easier. Andy On Tue, 24 Jul 2012 02:22:47 -0700 (PDT) Christian Mange <mangec@...> wrote: Hello, |

Hello,You can make a component with 16 parts (like with op-amps) and manipulate the pins. Then in the end you just assign the footprint you want. Maybe it can work if you make a component with say, 100 parts and assign a footprint/module with less pins. I guess the upcoming kicad with scripting and s-expressions will make it easy. |
eeschema and hardware
Christian Mange
Hello, New in using Kicad, I try to find a way to assign individual pins drawed in eeschema (ex: input, output, +15V etc...) to a connector like he10-16 in cvPCB. I don't want to have to make a conn_16 appears on eeschema but only individual pins. Sure there is a way to have a block diagram in eeschema fully independant from hardware... Christian |
Re: Searchable pdf
That would be a great feature! Had the same question from my contract manufacturer today, actually.

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to add a 'white' (invisible) layer for text into the printout? Then the font would not matter as it would only indicate where the visible text sits (which would still be graphics elements only) Thanks, Heiko --- In kicad-users@..., David Novak <david.novak@...> wrote:

Re: Mounting holes missing solder mask opening
Hi Robert, Esteban, Koenraad,

Thanks a lot for all your insights. Your comments led me to what I was doing wrong. Here it is so others don't run into same problem: As mentioned by Esteban, it was a confusion of solder paste versus solder mask. Itead asks for: Solder Stop Mask top: pcbname.GTS Solder Stop Mask Bottom pcbname.GBS I misinterpreted this as being the SoldP_Front and SoldP_Back in Kicad "plot" layers menu. In reality, I now believe I should have check the Mask_Front and Mask_Back instead as Robert mentioned these are the actual solder "masks". Typical beginner mistake.I really appreciate the help you all gave me which led me to the issue. This is a really great community! Kicad installs into /usr/local this is not on the PATH on some distros, Ubuntu, PCLinux. Does not matter because all you do is create a shortcut, or launcher or bash script and execute: /usr/local/kicad/bin/kicad That will launch kicad and you have access to all the programs. That is all I did on PClinux. Hope that helps. |

Here's the latest I heard from the pcb house:In the latest official build of Kicad, you have an option to indicate the hole as NPTH : Non-Plated-Though-Hole. Then there are two drill files made, one containing the PTH and one containing the NPTH drills. NPTH's are normally drilled after the PCB is etched/plated, so there can't be any solder in the holes.
